    A agricultura biolĂłgica na Beira Interior

    O presente estudo sobre a Agricultura Biológica na Beira Interior pretende contribuir para um melhor conhecimento da realidade das explorações agrícolas que praticam actividade pecuária em modo de produção biológico (MPB). No campo teórico procede-se a uma descrição sumária da evolução das medidas agro-ambientais no contexto da Política Agrícola Comum da União Europeia e a uma breve caracterização da Agricultura Biológica em Portugal e em outros países da UE, focalizando também a produção animal em MPB e a região objecto de estudo. No campo empírico recolheu-se informação dos produtores do distrito de Castelo Branco que praticam ou já praticaram MPB, tendo para o efeito sido elaborado um questionário. Das análises estatísticas univaridada e bivariada evidencia-se que os produtores têm dificuldades no cumprimento da legislação associada a MPB e no escoamento de produtos no circuito da agricultura biológica, destacando-se também que no contexto actual o MPB terá o seu futuro condicionado pela continuidade das ajudas agroambientais. Na análise multivariada (factorial em componentes principais) destacaram-se três componentes, a primeira associada a variáveis de dimensão das explorações, a segunda a aspectos MPB e a terceira a técnicas de produção aplicadas; ABSTRACT: In the theoretic part of this work, the evolution of agro-environmental measures in the context so Europeans Union Common Agricultural Policy is summarily described and a brief characterization of Organic Farming in Portugal and other EU countries is given, focusing on the Organic Farming and the region studied. In the empirical part, information about producers in Castelo Branco district that use or have used Organic Farming was gathered, by means of a survey. From the univariate and bivariate statistical analysis is shown that the producers experience difficulty complying with legislation about Organic Farming and selling the products in the Organic Farming circuit, also showing that in the present context Organic Farming will have its future limited by the maintaining of agro-environmental support. In the multivariate analysis (factorial analysis in principal components) three components were highlighted, first were variables related to the dimension of farms, second were Organic Farming aspects and third were the production techniques used

    Home-Advantage during COVID-19: An Analysis in Portuguese Football League

    Covid-19 pandemic forced, at the final rounds of 2019–2020 season, in many different sports leagues worldwide, teams to play without an audience. Therefore, the present paper aims to compare the home advantage score in the last ten rounds in the 2019–2020 season with the first 24 rounds in the same season using Pollard’s (1986) and Matos et al.’s (2020) methods. In addition, comparisons across different seasons (2016–2017; 2017–2018; 2018–2019 and 2019–2020) using the same methods were also analyzed. Results showed no differences (p > 0.05) between first 24 rounds and the last 10 in 2019–2020 season as well as in the 3 previous seasons. With Pollard’s method, no differences (p > 0.05) were also found among those four seasons on global (all 34 rounds) home advantage. However, a significance difference between 2017–2018 and 2019–2020 (p < 0.05) was founded using Matos et al.’s (2020) method, which is an indicator of the importance of using complementary methods when analyzing the same realities. Overall, despite what might be expectable from recent findings, the lack of an audience in the last 10 rounds of Portuguese Football League 2019–2020 season, due to COVID-19 pandemic, did not affect home advantage. Therefore, future studies could try to analyze other different variables in Portuguese Football League, such as referees’ behaviors, rules changing (e.g., the possibility of making five substitutions, instead of three), crowd dimension and density as well as include variables about odds as forecasts in football being played without crowds.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Algoritmos eficientes para gestão energética das estações base de sistemas de comunicação móveis

    Com o crescimento exponencial de consumo de dados e a subsequente expansão de infraestruturas das redes de comunicação móveis, é crucial criar estratégias que reduzam o consumo energético. Na verdade, 80% da energia total consumida é utilizada pelas estações base. As fortes variações espaciais e temporais do tráfego oferecido exigem uma implementação heterogénea de estações base, recorrendo a diferentes tamanhos associados a tecnologias distintas (GSM, UMTS e LTE), que respondem aos requisitos de capacidade e cobertura. Tipicamente, as macro-células utilizam frequências inferiores para garantir a cobertura numa maior área de serviço (as chamadas células de cobertura). As micro-células recorrem a frequências superiores e têm uma cobertura menor, sendo utilizadas para aumentar a capacidade do sistema em zonas específicas (chamadas de células de capacidade). É proposta uma estratégia de gestão de estações base, consciente do tráfego da rede. Usando medições do tráfego e da estimativa da área de cobertura das células, são identificados pares de células de cobertura e capacidade. Foram identificados pares de células de cobertura e capacidade, onde a célula de cobertura cobre a área servida pela outra. Uma análise de tráfego permite identificar períodos do dia em que a célula de capacidade poderá ser desligada, ou seja, quando o tráfego agregado das duas células é suficientemente baixo para ser entregue à célula de cobertura.With the exponential growth of data consumption and the subsequent expansion of the infrastructures of mobile communication networks, it is crucial to devise strategies that reduce energy consumption. In fact 80% of the total spent power is used by the base stations. The strong spatial and temporal variations of offered traffic require heterogeneous deployment of base stations, by recurring to different sizes associated with distinct technologies (GSM, UMTS and LTE), to address coverage and capacity requirements. Typically, macro-cells use lower frequencies to guarantee coverage in larger areas of service (so-called coverage-cells). Micro-cells use higher frequencies and have a lower coverage and are used to increase the system capacity in specific zones (so-called capacity-cells). A traffic aware strategy for the management of base stations’ activity is proposed. Using traffic load measurements and estimating cells’ coverage areas, it identifies coverage and capacity cells pairs, where the coverage-cell covers the area served by the other. A traffic analysis identifies periods in the day where capacitycells may be switched-off, when aggregate traffic of both cells is sufficiently low to be handed-over to the coverage-cell

    Coupling spatial pollination supply models with local demand mapping to support collaborative management of ecosystem services

    UID/AMB/04085/2019 UIDB/04085/2020Mapping of ecosystem services (ES) is a powerful tool for communication and knowledge sharing about the implications of ecosystem management practices for human wellbeing. This research aimed to show the usefulness of ES mapping for decision-making by combining modelling of ES supply with ES demand mapping in a participatory process with the engagement of relevant stakeholders. We used the ESTIMAP-pollination model to map wild bee abundance and pollination supply in the Sudoeste Alentejano and Costa Vicentina Natural Park (PNSACV) in Portugal. The model was modified by adding a behavioural component that distributes pollinator visits according to floral availability. Balancing pollination supply with crop dependency levels allowed visualising potential areas of satisfied and unsatisfied demand and testing the effectiveness of ecosystem management interventions. The discussion of these results in two participatory workshops triggered the first collective debate about pollination in the PNSACV. This engagement enabled the development of a shared understanding about this ES and highlighted the role of ES maps as tools to support collaborative natural resources management.publishersversionpublishe

    Cloud-Based Implementation of an Automatic Coverage Estimation Methodology for Self-Organising Network

    UIDB/EEA/50008/2020One of the main concerns of telecommunications operators is related to network coverage. A weak coverage can lead to a performance decrease, not only in the user experience, when using the operators' services, such as multimedia streaming, but also in the overall Quality of Service. This paper presents a novel cloud-based framework of a semi-empirical propagation model that estimates the coverage in a precise way. The novelty of this model is that it is automatically calibrated by using drive test measurements, terrain morphology, buildings in the area, configurations of the network itself and key performance indicators, automatically extracted from the operator's network. Requirements and use cases are presented as motivations for this methodology. The results achieve an accuracy of about 5 dB, allowing operators to obtain accurate neighbour lists, optimise network planning and automate certain actions on the network by enabling the Self-Organising Network concept. The cloud implementation enables a fast and easy integration with other network management and monitoring tools, such as the Metric platform, optimising operators' resource usage recurring to elastic resources on-demand when needed.     Progress from ASDEX Upgrade experiments in preparing the physics basis of ITER operation and DEMO scenario development

    An overview of recent results obtained at the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) is given. A work flow for predictive profile modelling of AUG discharges was established which is able to reproduce experimental H-mode plasma profiles based on engineering parameters only. In the plasma center, theoretical predictions on plasma current redistribution by a dynamo effect were confirmed experimentally. For core transport, the stabilizing effect of fast ion distributions on turbulent transport is shown to be important to explain the core isotope effect and improves the description of hollow low-Z impurity profiles. The L–H power threshold of hydrogen plasmas is not affected by small helium admixtures and it increases continuously from the deuterium to the hydrogen level when the hydrogen concentration is raised from 0 to 100%. One focus of recent campaigns was the search for a fusion relevant integrated plasma scenario without large edge localised modes (ELMs). Results from six different ELM-free confinement regimes are compared with respect to reactor relevance: ELM suppression by magnetic perturbation coils could be attributed to toroidally asymmetric turbulent fluctuations in the vicinity of the separatrix. Stable improved confinement mode plasma phases with a detached inner divertor were obtained using a feedback control of the plasma β. The enhanced Dα H-mode regime was extended to higher heating power by feedback controlled radiative cooling with argon. The quasi-coherent exhaust regime was developed into an integrated scenario at high heating power and energy confinement, with a detached divertor and without large ELMs. Small ELMs close to the separatrix lead to peeling-ballooning stability and quasi continuous power exhaust. Helium beam density fluctuation measurements confirm that transport close to the separatrix is important to achieve the different ELM-free regimes. Based on separatrix plasma parameters and interchange-drift-Alfvén turbulence, an analytic model was derived that reproduces the experimentally found important operational boundaries of the density limit and between L- and H-mode confinement. Feedback control for the X-point radiator (XPR) position was established as an important element for divertor detachment control. Stable and detached ELM-free phases with H-mode confinement quality were obtained when the XPR was moved 10 cm above the X-point. Investigations of the plasma in the future flexible snow-flake divertor of AUG by means of first SOLPS-ITER simulations with drifts activated predict beneficial detachment properties and the activation of an additional strike point by the drifts.This work has been carried out within the framework of the EUROfusion Consortium and has received funding from the Euratom research and training programme 2014–2018 and 2019–2020 under Grant Agreement No. 633053.     Epidemiology of periodontal disease among the elderly

    The present study aims to reflect on the oral health status of the elderly, addressing periodontal disease, as well as the importance of oral health, general health and quality of life. The methodology adopted consisted of a bibliographic research of scientific articles indexed in PUBMED® and Google Scholar® with the following combined keywords: “Periodontal Disease”, “Gerodontology”, “Oral Health”, “Elderly” and “Epidemiology”, either in Portuguese or in English. The exclusion criteria for the selection of the scientific articles used consisted in limiting the research to the Portuguese and English languages, limiting the publication date to the last 10 years, and only scientific articles referring to the epidemiology of periodontal disease among the elderly. Therefore, from a total of 33 scientific articles, only 17 scientific articles were selected for the present research. The most recent studies do show that periodontal disease is clearly a public health issue, increasing among all ages. However, this oral pathology should be carefully analyzed among the elderly considering the higher risk of association with the development of other systemic diseases and also the physiological, mental and social changes that characterize this specific age group.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Feasibility of a mobile-based system for unsupervised monitoring in Parkinson’s disease

Objective: The objective of our study was to explore the feasibility and usability of an mHealth system for continuous and objective real-life measures of patients' health and functional mobility, in unsupervised settings. Methods: Patients with a clinical diagnosis of PD, who were able to walk unassisted, and had an Android smartphone were included. Patients were asked to answer a daily survey, to perform three weekly active tests, and to perform a monthly in-person clinical assessment. Feasibility and usability were explored as primary and secondary outcomes. An exploratory analysis was performed to investigate the correlation between data from the mKinetikos app and clinical assessments. Results: Seventeen participants (85%) completed the study. Sixteen participants (94.1%) showed a medium-to-high level of compliance with the mKinetikos system. A 6-point drop in the total score of the Post-Study System Usability Questionnaire was observed. Conclusions: Our results support the feasibility of the mKinetikos system for continuous and objective real-life measures of a patient's health and functional mobility. The observed correlations of mKinetikos metrics with clinical data seem to suggest that this mHealth solution is a promising tool to support clinical decisions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    RESUMOO café possui posição privilegiada na cadeia de consumo global sendo hoje a bebida preparada mais consumida do mundo. Com a ascensão e desenvolvimento dos mercados, o consumo de cafés especiais, que antes era restrita aos mercados americanos e europeus, começa a ganhar cada vez mais adeptos no Brasil. Seja como necessidade para atender aos consumidores cada vez mais exigentes por qualidade ou mesmo para obter um diferencial competitivo sobre a concorrência, o surgimento de cafeterias democratizou o acesso dos consumidores a cafés especiais, emergindo no mercado um novo nicho que ganha cada vez mais adeptos à experiência sensorial, social e fisiológicas proporcionadas pelo consumo de café especial. Por meio da análise sensorial, método principal utilizado neste estudo, é possível obter parâmetros e informações a respeito das preferências do consumidor diante de propriedade como cor, aroma e sabor. A partir do conhecimento destes parâmetros é possível traçar estratégias mercadológicas tanto a respeito do produto, como suas características, forma de venda e consumo, bem como do consumidor, seus costumes, hábitos e preferências. As the rising and development of markets, the consumption of specialty coffees, which were previously restricted to American and European markets, has also beginning to gain much more fans in Brazil. Whether you need to cater to increasingly demanding consumers for quality or even to gain a competitive edge over a competition, or to open democratized coffee shops or access specialty coffee consumers, a new niche is emerging on the market that gets more and more adept at the experience. sensory, social and physiological aspects offered by the consumption of special coffee. Through sensory analysis, the main method used in this research, it is possible to obtain information about the  consumer’s preference in to use regarding the property as color, aroma and taste. From the knowledge of these parameters, it’s possible to trace the marketing goods, as well as respect for the product, as the characteristics, way of sale and consumption, as well as consumer, their fantasies and habits. The purpose of this paper was to understand how to use and purchase intentions of Cafeteria School CafEsal patrons through a sensory analysis of three different measures of special type coffee logs.

    Impact modelling and a posteriori non-destructive evaluation of homogeneous particleboards of sugarcane bagasse

    With a view to gaining an in-depth assessment of the response of particleboards (PBs) to different in-service loading conditions, samples of high-density homogeneous PBs of sugarcane bagasse and castor oil polyurethane resin were manufactured and subjected to low velocity impacts using an instrumented drop weight impact tower and four different energy levels, namely 5, 10, 20 and 30 J. The prediction of the damage modes was assessed using Comsol Multiphysics ® . ®. In particular, the random distribution of the fibres and their lengths were reproduced through a robust model. The experimentally obtained dent depths due to the impactor were compared with the ones numerically simulated showing good agreement. The post-impact damage was evaluated by a simultaneous system of image acquisitions coming from two different sensors. In particular, thermograms were recorded during the heating up and cooling down phases, while the specklegrams were gathered one at room temperature (as reference) and the remaining during the cooling down phase. On one hand, the specklegrams were processed via a new software package named Ncorr v.1.2, which is an open-source subset-based 2D digital image correlation (DIC) package that combines modern DIC algorithms proposed in the literature with additional enhancements. On the other hand, the thermographic results linked to a square pulse were compared with those coming from the laser line thermography technique that heats a line-region on the surface of the sample instead of a spot. Surprisingly, both the vibrothermography and the line scanning thermography methods coupled with a robotized system show substantial advantages in the defect detection around the impacted zone
