The following text analyses part of the testimonial work of the uruguayan writer Carlos Liscano, trying to elucidate the bond between prison writing and a process of particular subjectivation. I am interested in showing the way in which, in the prison writing, the word has the power to subvert the abstract prison life, as well as to make up, through a fiction exercise, the prisoner’s own self. Writing thus evolves into a fictionalized enunciation site, which produces an undeniable reality effect: surviving

    Socioeconomic segregation of students

School segregation may be questioning the equity of the Spanish educational system. In this research, we analyse the school segregation by socioeconomic status using the Hutchens Index. Specifically, we decompose the effect of attending public vs semiprivate schools in terms of segregation. The analyses is based on data collecting information from the population of Andalusian students attending 5th grade. We found significant differences in the level of segregation between both schools types. Particularly, the results show that students from high socioeconomic and cultural status are more segregated in public schools, while students from a low socioeconomic and cultural status are more segregated in semiprivate schools. These differences provide evidence of the inequity of the education policy, which should rethink funding mechanisms as a means to fight against inequality.

    Get PDF

This article presents a procedure for constructing a taxonomy of COTS products in the field of Requirements Engineering (RE). The taxonomy and the obtained information reach transcendental benefits to the selection of systems and tools that aid to RE-related actors to simplify and facilitate their work. This taxonomy is performed by means of a goal-oriented methodology inspired in GBRAM (Goal-Based Requirements Analysis Method), called GBTCM (Goal-Based Taxonomy Construction Method), that provides a guide to analyze sources of information and modeling requirements and domains, as well as gathering and organizing the knowledge in any segment of the COTS market. GBTCM claims to promote the use of standards and the reuse of requirements in order to support different processes of selection and integration of components.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Get PDF
The extensive use of TCS has caused its presence in many water sources, especially in wastewater, wastewater treatment plant effluents, lakes, rivers and in sediments throughout the world, posing a risk to the environment and human health. Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) have been successfully applied to wastewaters containing recalcitrant organic compounds, such as TCS. However, the generation of by-products during the degradation of the primary pollutant is another issue of concern in the application of AOPs. In fact, the presence of these by-products could increase the final toxicity of the treated wastewater. In this way, TCS has been related to the formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), which are a family of unintentionally persistent organic pollutants that are characterized by their high persistency, bioaccumulation in the environment and high toxicity. Hence, this thesis is focused on the study of oxidation treatments, electrochemical and photo-oxidation, in terms of TCS degradation rate and by-products formation, paying special attention to the potential formation of PCDD/Fs.This research was financially supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities through the Projects: CTM2014-58029-R (MINECO-FEDER, UE) “Identificación y Cuantificación de las Variables Responsables de la Potencial Formación de PCDD/Fs en Procesos de Oxidación Avanzada” and CTM2017-87740-R (AEI/FEDER, UE) “Aplicación de Tecnologías Ambientales a Matrices Líquidas Conteniendo Contaminantes Orgánicos Emergentes Precursores de la Formación de Derivados Clorados (PCDD/Fs)”.

    Get PDF

Is grade retention the solution for failing?

    Get PDF
The convenience of grade retention for students’ adequate progression in the education system has been the focus of great debate. However, the characteristics that the grade retention variable presents when explaining students’ academic achievement has prevented most of the research works to delve into the effect of this policy. Because of that, in the present research work we intend to get as close as possible to endogeneity free estimate by the use of rich census and longitudinal data, together with a student fixed-effects within students between-academic years strategy. We find that grade retention affects students’ academic performance. Parents' and Children's Gender: the effect of parental expectations in children's performance

    Get PDF
Parental expectations have been found in the literature to explain their children’s academic achievement. Nevertheless, most of the evidence on this issue is the result of the endogeneity of parental expectations when explaining students’ performance. In this context, we propose to solve this issue by using longitudinal data for the education period of the transition between primary and secondary education, employing time fixed effects to analyse the effect of parental expectations on students’ progression – being the latter measured by students’ academic achievement and their likelihood of grade repetition. We go more into depth on this issue by the study of gender differences of this effect, using all possible combinations between parents’ and children’s genders. Our results have shown that higher fathers’ and mothers’ expectations improve students’ progression, but parents seem to be more demanding with girls in terms of levels of education.Universidad de Málaga. Over the years, many methods and techniques have been proposed to improve their elicitation, documentation, and validation. Knowing more about the state of the practice on these topics may benefit both practitioners' and researchers' daily work. A few empirical studies have been conducted in the past, but none under the perspective of software architects, in spite of the great influence that NFRs have on daily architects' practices. This paper presents some of the findings of an empirical study based on 13 interviews with software architects. It addresses questions such as: who decides the NFRs, what types of NFRs matter to architects, how are NFRs documented, and how are NFRs validated. The results are contextualized with existing previous work.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author’s final draft
