This work was supported by national funds through the FCT- Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia. UID/CCI/04667/2016The use of new mobile technologies has become a global phenomenon. There is “a global mobile youth culture” and an “emergency of the sociability in a network” (Castells et al., 2009: 183-184). This study main goal is to understand the mobile phone use by the millennials, and inherent gratifications and social effects generated by the use of such equipment. The research carried out through a mixed methodology that met the quantitative and qualitative research included the analysis of 649 questionnaires applied to young adults and 46 posts obtained from the Facebook webpages of the main telecommunications operators in Portugal. The flow effect among other results revealed by structural equation model, may serve as a warning to the users themselves, parents, companies and schools, which act as educational mediators of language, through new technologies.publishersversionpublishe

&nbsp

Data Analysis on Blockchain Distributed File Systems: Systematic Literature Review

    Get PDF
The interest on the discovery of information hidden in large amounts of data exploded in the last decade, bringing to light the need of efficient and effective tools to access all sources and kinds of data. On the other hand, the need to secure and share valuable data led to the development of new technologies, like blockchain, that warrant data integrity and transparency. Combining both is a natural demand, but several issues become clear, such as the lack of access efficiency and the need of data replication in common solutions. Indeed, the unique existing approach is by emulating queries, mostly through Smart Contracts, and applying traditional machine learning algorithms over the resulting data, stored externally for allowing multiple accesses. In this paper, we performed a systematic literature review that provides the above conclusions. Later, we discuss a new system architecture for the analysis of data stored in a blockchain, exploring the scalability and high-performance of data access in distributed file systems and the fast and up-to-date predictions of a streaming analysis approach

Usefulness of genetic characterization of narcolepsy and hypersomnia on phenotype definition: a study in Portuguese patients

    Get PDF
The determination of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II genotype is widely used to confirm the diagnosis of narcolepsy with or without cataplexy. The HLA genotyping is reliable, easy to perform and reassures the clinician. It is also less invasive than other methodologies and is in accordance with the autoimmune hypothesis for the origin of narcolepsy. AIM. To assess the usefulness of genetic markers (HLA) in the differential diagnosis between different sleep disorders and their relevance in the context of our population

CONCLUSÃO: de acordo com os resultados deste estudo podemos concluir que as dificuldades apresentadas por escolares com Transtorno de Déficit de Atenção e Hiperatividade podem ser atribuídas à desatenção, hiperatividade e desorganização, característica do próprio diagnóstico, e não a uma desordem de linguagem de base fonológica.OBJECTIVE: the aim of this study was to compare the cognitive-linguistic skills performance and reading of students with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder and students without behavioral and/or learning disorders. METHOD: the study included 20 students from 5th to 8th grade of elementary school. The students were divided into: Group I (GI): composed by 10 students with an interdisciplinary diagnosis of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, and Group II (GII): composed by 10 students without complaints of behavioral and/or learning disorders. The tests of metalinguistic skills and reading (PROHMELE) were used as procedure, composed of syllabic and phonemic identification, syllabic and phonemic manipulation, repetition of nonwords and reading tests. RESULTS: the results showed statistically significant differences between GI and GII, demonstrating that students from GI presented superior performances when compared to the students from GII. CONCLUSION: according to the findings of this study we can conclude that the difficulties presented by students with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder can be attributed to inattention, hyperactivity and disorganization, characteristic of this diagnosis, and not to a disorder of language of phonological basis

Poster apresentado no 28th Congress of International Society For Forensic Genetics (ISFG 2019), Praga, República Checa, 9-13 de Setembro de 2019As an improvement in efficiency and in Human Discrimination Power, the new six dye multiplex kit PowerPlex® Fusion 6C System, by Promega, available for human identification can co-amplify 27 loci, in a single reaction, have been introduced in the last years with great success. This kit allows the amplification and detection of autosomal loci included in the expanded Combined DNA Index System CODIS, plus the loci Penta D, PENTA E and SE33 as well as Amelogenin for gender determination. Furthermore, this kit includes three Y –STRs (DYS391, DYS576 and DYS570), allowing allelic attribution in a total of 27 loci. This genetic markers extension satisfies not only CODIS but also European Standard Set recommendations. Thinking about continuous human migration movements, especially in a very cosmopolitan region like Lisbon and south of Portugal, and also, in keeping population studies and actualized STR databases we decided to update our previous studies. Our sample is composed of 600 unrelated individuals, from paternity testing with laboratory identity anonymised. DNA was extracted by Prep-n-go BufferTM(Thermo-Fisher Scientific). PCR amplification was performed with PowerPlex® Fusion 6C System, according to manufacturer’s guidelines. Fragment analysis was carried out in an Applied Biosystems® 3500 Genetic Analyser. Electrophoresis results were analysed with GeneMapper® ID-X v1.4. Allele frequencies and population statistics, including Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium p-values from exact test probabilities and forensic parameters were calculated with adequate software. In conclusion, our population information was updated in order to apply most recent data in our casework weight of evidence.N/

Trehalose alleviates the phenotype of Machado–Joseph disease mouse models

Machado-Joseph disease (MJD), also known as spinocerebellar ataxia type 3, is the most common of the dominantly inherited ataxias worldwide and is characterized by mutant ataxin-3 aggregation and neuronal degeneration. There is no treatment available to block or delay disease progression. In this work we investigated whether trehalose, a natural occurring disaccharide widely used in food and cosmetic industry, would rescue biochemical, behavioral and neuropathological features of an in vitro and of a severe MJD transgenic mouse model. This work was funded by BioBlast Pharma, the ERDF through the Regional Operational Program Center 2020, Competitiveness Factors Operational Program (COMPETE 2020) and National Funds through FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology) - SFRH/BD/87404/2012, BrainHealth2020 projects (CENTRO-01-0145-FEDER-000008), ViraVector (CENTRO-01-0145FEDER-022095), CortaCAGs (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016719), SpreadSilenc‑ing POCI-01-0145-FEDER-029716 and POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007440, as well as the SynSpread, ESMI and ModelPolyQ under the EU Joint ProgramNeurodegenerative Disease Research (JPND), the last two co-funded bythe European Union H2020 program, GA No. 643417; by National Ataxia Foundation (USA), the American Portuguese Biomedical Research Fund (APBRF) and the Richard Chin and Lily Lock Machado–Joseph Disease Research Fund.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
