A neonicotinoid insecticide reduces fueling and delays migration in songbirds

We tracked the migratory movements of imidacloprid-exposed songbirds at a landscape scale using a combination of experimental dosing and automated radio telemetry. Ingestion of field-realistic quantities of imidacloprid (1.2 or 3.9 milligrams per kilogram body mass) by white-crowned sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrys) during migratory stopover caused a rapid reduction in food consumption, mass, and fat and significantly affected their probability of departure. Birds in the high-dose treatment stayed a median of 3.5 days longer at the site of capture after exposure as compared with controls, likely to regain fuel stores or recover from intoxication. Migration delays can carry over to affect survival and reproduction; thus, these results confirm a link between sublethal pesticide exposure and adverse outcomes for migratory bird populations
American Dipper, Cinclus mexicanus, Preys Upon Larval Tailed Frogs, Ascaphus truei
The American Dipper (Cinclus mexicanus) is an aquatic songbird that inhabits fast-flowing mountain streams in western North America. Although dippers are known to feed primarily on aquatic invertebrates, they will also eat juvenile fish and salmon eggs when available. In 2002, while monitoring and photographing nesting activities of the American dipper, we observed and photographed adult dippers capturing Tailed Frog (Ascaphus truei) tadpoles and feeding them to their young. This note is intended to document a rarely observed occurrence and identify interactions between two relatively uncommon species
Part-per-trillion LC-MS/MS determination of neonicotinoids in small volumes of songbird plasma

Analytical methods to diagnose exposure to neonicotinoids in wildlife are still very limited, particularly for small animals such as songbirds. Blood can be used as a non-lethal sampling matrix, but the sample volume is limited by body size. Neonicotinoids have a low bioaccumulation potential and are rapidly metabolized, therefore, sensitive assays are critically needed to reliably detect their residues in blood samples. We developed an efficient LC-MS/MS method at a part-per-trillion (pg/ml) level to measure eight neonicotinoid related insecticides (acetamiprid, clothianidin, dinotefuran, flonicamid, imidacloprid, nitenpyram, thiacloprid and thiamethoxam) plus one metabolite (6-chloronicotinic acid) in small volumes (50 μL) of avian plasma. The average recovery of target compounds ranged from 95.7 to 101.3%, and relative standard deviations were between 0.82 and 2.13%. We applied the method to screen blood samples from 36 seed-eating songbirds (white-crowned sparrows; Zonotrichia leucophrys) at capture, and detected imidacloprid in 78% (28 of 36), thiamethoxam in 22% (8 of 36), thiacloprid in 11% (4 of 36), and acetamiprid in 11% (4 of 36) of wild-caught sparrows. 6 h after capture, birds were orally dosed with 0 (control), 1.2 or 3.9 mg of imidacloprid/kg bw, test results using this method indicated that plasma imidacloprid was significantly elevated (low 26-times, high 316-times) in exposed groups. This is the first study to confirm neonicotinoid exposure in small free-living songbirds through non-lethal blood sampling, and to demonstrate that environmentally realistic doses significantly elevate circulating imidacloprid concentrations. This sensitive method could be applied to characterize exposure to neonicotinoids in free-living wildlife and in toxicological studies
Do American Dippers Obtain a Survival Benefit from Altitudinal Migration?
Studies of partial migrants provide an opportunity to assess the cost and benefits of migration. Previous work has demonstrated that sedentary American dippers (residents) have higher annual productivity than altitudinal migrants that move to higher elevations to breed. Here we use a ten-year (30 period) mark-recapture dataset to evaluate whether migrants offset their lower productivity with higher survival during the migration-breeding period when they occupy different habitat, or early and late-winter periods when they coexist with residents. Mark-recapture models provide no evidence that apparent monthly survival of migrants is higher than that of residents at any time of the year. The best-supported model suggests that monthly survival is higher in the migration-breeding period than winter periods. Another well-supported model suggested that residency conferred a survival benefit, and annual apparent survival (calculated from model weighted monthly apparent survival estimates using the Delta method) of residents (0.511 ± 0.038SE) was slightly higher than that of migrants (0.487 ± 0.032). Winter survival of American dippers was influenced by environmental conditions; monthly apparent survival increased as maximum daily flow rates increased and declined as winter temperatures became colder. However, we found no evidence that environmental conditions altered differences in winter survival of residents and migrants. Since migratory American dippers have lower productivity and slightly lower survival than residents our data suggests that partial migration is likely an outcome of competition for limited nest sites at low elevations, with less competitive individuals being forced to migrate to higher elevations in order to breed
Nitrogen Production in Starburst Galaxies Detected by GALEX
We investigate the production of nitrogen in star-forming galaxies with ultraviolet (UV) radiation detected by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer Satellite (GALEX). We use a sample of 8745 GALEX emission-line galaxies matched to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic sample. We derive both gas-phase oxygen and nitrogen abundances for the sample and apply stellar population synthesis models to derive stellar masses and star formation histories of the galaxies. We compare oxygen abundances derived using three different diagnostics. We derive the specific star formation rates of the galaxies by modeling the seven-band GALEX+SDSS photometry. We find that galaxies that have log (SFR/M_*) ≳ − 10.0 typically have values of log (N/O) ~ 0.05 dex less than galaxies with log (SFR/M_*) ≾ − 10.0 and similar oxygen abundances
A GALEX Ultraviolet Imaging Survey of Galaxies in the Local Volume
We present results from a GALEX ultraviolet (UV) survey of a complete sample
of 390 galaxies within ~11 Mpc of the Milky Way. The UV data are a key
component of the composite Local Volume Legacy (LVL), an
ultraviolet-to-infrared imaging program designed to provide an inventory of
dust and star formation in nearby spiral and irregular galaxies. The ensemble
dataset is an especially valuable resource for studying star formation in dwarf
galaxies, which comprise over 80% of the sample. We describe the GALEX survey
programs which obtained the data and provide a catalog of far-UV (~1500
Angstroms) and near-UV (~2200 Angstroms) integrated photometry. General UV
properties of the sample are briefly discussed. We compute two measures of the
global star formation efficiency, the SFR per unit HI gas mass and the SFR per
unit stellar mass, to illustrate the significant differences that can arise in
our understanding of dwarf galaxies when the FUV is used to measure the SFR
instead of H-alpha. We find that dwarf galaxies may not be as drastically
inefficient in coverting gas into stars as suggested by prior H-alpha studies.
In this context, we also examine the UV properties of late-type dwarf galaxies
that appear to be devoid of star formation because they were not detected in
previous H-alpha narrowband observations. Nearly all such galaxies in our
sample are detected in the FUV, and have FUV SFRs that fall below the limit
where the H-alpha flux is robust to Poisson fluctuations in the formation of
massive stars. The UV colors and star formation efficiencies of
H-alpha-undetected, UV-bright dwarf irregulars appear to be relatively
unremarkable with respect to those exhibited by the general population of

The Diverse Properties of the Most Ultraviolet Luminous Galaxies Discovered by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer
We report on the properties of a sample of ultraviolet luminous galaxies
(UVLGs) selected by matching the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) Surveys with
the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Third Data Release. Out of 25362 galaxies between
0.02x10^10 L_solar at
1530 Angstroms (observed wavelength). The properties of this population are
well correlated with ultraviolet surface brightness. We find that the galaxies
with low UV surface brightness are primarily large spiral systems with a
mixture of old and young stellar populations, while the high surface brightness
galaxies consist primarily of compact starburst systems. In terms of the
behavior of surface brightness with luminosity, size with luminosity, the
mass-metallicity relation, and other parameters, the compact UVLGs clearly
depart from the trends established by the full sample of galaxies. The subset
of compact UVLGs with the highest surface brightness (``supercompact UVLGs'')
have characteristics that are remarkably similar to Lyman Break Galaxies at
higher redshift. They are much more luminous than typical local
ultraviolet-bright starburst galaxies and blue compact dwarf galaxies. They
have metallicities that are systematically lower than normal galaxies of the
same stellar mass, indicating that they are less chemically evolved. In all

Structure of unstable light nuclei
The structure of light nuclei out to the drip lines and beyond up to Z = 8 is
interpreted in terms of the shell model. Special emphasis is given to the
underlying supermultiplet symmetry of the p-shell nuclei which form cores for
neutrons and protons added in sd-shell orbits. Detailed results are given on
the wave functions, widths, and Coulomb energy shifts for a wide range of

Comparison of H-alpha and UV Star Formation Rates in the Local Volume: Systematic Discrepancies for Dwarf Galaxies
(abridged) Using a complete sample of ~300 star-forming galaxies within 11
Mpc, we evaluate the consistency between star formation rates (SFRs) inferred
from the far ultraviolet (FUV) non-ionizing continuum and H-alpha nebular
emission, assuming standard conversion recipes in which the SFR scales linearly
with luminosity at a given wavelength. Our analysis probes SFRs over 5 orders
of magnitude, down to ultra-low activities on the order of ~0.0001 M_sun/yr.
The data are drawn from the 11 Mpc H-alpha and Ultraviolet Galaxy Survey
(11HUGS), which has obtained H-alpha fluxes from ground-based narrowband
imaging, and UV fluxes from imaging with GALEX. For normal spiral galaxies
(SFR~1 M_sun/yr), our results are consistent with previous work which has shown
that FUV SFRs tend to be lower than H-alpha SFRs before accounting for internal
dust attenuation, but that there is relative consistency between the two
tracers after proper corrections are applied. However, a puzzle is encountered
at the faint end of the luminosity function. As lower luminosity dwarf
galaxies, roughly less active than the Small Magellanic Cloud, are examined,
H-alpha tends to increasingly under-predict the SFR relative to the FUV.
Although past studies have suggested similar trends, this is the first time
this effect is probed with a statistical sample for galaxies with SFR~<0.1
M_sun/yr. A range of standard explanations does not appear to be able to
account for the magnitude of the systematic. Some recent work has argued for an
IMF which is deficient in high mass stars in dwarf and low surface brightness
