    Decision field theory: An extension for real-world settings

    Decision field theory (DFT) is a model originally developed in cognitive psychology to explain behavioural phenomena such as context effects and decision-making under time pressure. Given this focus, the model has primarily been used to explain choices observed under controlled laboratory settings, with little attention paid to generalisability. Recent work has improved the mathematical foundations of DFT, making it a tractable model that is easier to apply to a wider variety of choice contexts. In particular, the inclusion of attribute importance parameters has led to successful applications to multi-alternative multi-attribute choice settings, notably with stated preference data in transport. However, thus far, implementations to real-life behaviour (i.e., revealed preference, RP, data) have been limited. The aim of this paper is to extend DFT for larger and more real-world applications, where data may be more ‘noisy’ and prone to larger variances of the error term. A theoretical extension for the model is presented, relaxing the assumption of independent normal error terms to capture heteroskedasticity. We apply the new model specification to two large-scale revealed preference datasets, also incorporating a range of sociodemographic variables. The new ‘heteroskedastic’ DFT model substantially outperforms the original version of DFT, as well as choice models based on econometric theory, in both estimation and validation subsets

    Social inequality and the changing patterns of travel in the pandemic and post-pandemic era

    The COVID-19 pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on mobility patterns resulting in a significant literature investigating travel behaviours over the course of the pandemic. Missing from much existing work on pandemic mobility is an explicit handling of the time-of-day of travel, which in previous literature has been shown to be an important factor in understanding mobility and, importantly, in understanding the impact on transport networks. In this article, we present a novel analysis of anonymised individual daily mobility patterns in the UK over a 30-month period covering the COVID-19 pandemic using privacy-preserving mobile phone GPS data, collected via integration of software development kits (SDKs) into mobile apps. Our analysis is based on time series clustering of mobility profiles at an hourly level of resolution and enables us to characterize five distinct daily mobility patterns. This typology appears remarkably robust over time, albeit with varying levels of each pattern during the course of the study period. We analyse the relative frequency of these patterns in relation to two dimensions of neighbourhood deprivation in England, with a particular focus on understanding mobility post-lockdown and for over a year after the final restrictions were lifted in the UK. Our results show that although overall mobility patterns have largely returned to their pre-pandemic levels, there remain persistent inequalities in relation to ‘traditional commute’, ‘highly mobile’ and ‘out in the evening’ activity patterns. This finding is expected to have important ongoing policy implications

    Determining causality in travel mode choice

    This article presents one of the pioneering studies on causal modeling in travel mode choice decision-making using causal discovery algorithms. These models are a major advancement from conventional correlation-based techniques. We propose a novel methodology that combines causal discovery with structural equation modeling (SEM). This modeling approach overcomes some of the limitations of SEM by combining the strengths of both causal discovery and SEM. Causal discovery algorithms determine causal graphs from observational data and domain knowledge, and SEMs estimate direct causal effects and test the performance of causal discovery algorithms. In this study, we test four causal discovery algorithms: Peter-Clark (PC), Fast Causal Inference (FCI), Fast Greedy Equivalence Search (FGES), and Direct Linear Non-Gaussian Acyclic Models (DirectLiNGAM). The results show that DirectLiNGAM based SEM model best captures causality in mode choice behavior. It passes several goodness-of-fit tests, including Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA) and Goodness-of-Fit Index (GFI), and it achieves the lowest Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) value.     Electromagnetic radiation emitted by the colliding beams is expected to play an important role at the next generation of high energy e^+ e^- linear collider(s). Focusing on the simplest process e+e- -> mu+ mu-, we show that radiative effects like initial state radiation (ISR) and beamstrahlung can lead to greatly-enhanced signals for resonant graviton modes of the Randall-Sundrum model.Comment: 20 pages Latex, 7 eps figure

    Seasonal development and pathological changes associated with the parasitic nematode Philometroides sanguineus in wild crucian carp Carassius carassius (L.) in England

    Pathological changes associated with the parasitic nematode Philometroides sanguineus (Rudolphi, 1819) are described for the first time from observations of infections in wild crucian carp Carassius carassius (L.) in England. The damage caused by P. sanguineus was influenced strongly by host size, parasite development and the seasonal migrations of female nematodes within host tissues. Male and unfertilized female nematodes located on the swim-bladder wall caused only minor, localized changes. In contrast, the migration of gravid female nematodes into the fins during autumn provoked an acute inflammatory response comprising neutrophils, eosinophils and lymphocytes. This was accompanied by fin distortion, swelling of the dorsal and caudal tissues, degenerative changes and localized oedema. The encapsulation of female nematodes in connective tissue throughout winter limited additional tissue damage. The emergence of gravid nematodes from the fins in spring to facilitate larval dispersal caused necrosis, hyperplasia and loss of skin integrity. This activity was again accompanied by acute inflammatory reactions. Pathological changes were more severe in crucian carp measuring less than 60 mm in length, with no signs of debilitation in larger fish. These observations suggest that any impact of P. sanguineus is strictly seasonal and may be limited to fry. Lesions caused by this parasite, only recently recorded in Britain, may represent an additional pressure upon wild crucian carp populations already threatened by hybridization, competition and habitat loss

    Implications of LHC Searches on SUSY Particle Spectra: The pMSSM Parameter Space with Neutralino Dark Matter

    We study the implications of LHC searches on SUSY particle spectra using flat scans of the 19-parameter pMSSM phase space. We apply constraints from flavour physics, g_mu-2, dark matter and earlier LEP and Tevatron searches. The sensitivity of the LHC SUSY searches with jets, leptons and missing energy is assessed by reproducing with fast simulation the recent CMS analyses after validation on benchmark points. We present results in terms of the fraction of pMSSM points compatible with all the constraints which are excluded by the LHC searches with 1 fb^{-1} and 15 fb^{-1} as a function of the mass of strongly and weakly interacting SUSY particles. We also discuss the suppression of Higgs production cross sections for the MSSM points not excluded and contrast the region of parameter space tested by the LHC data with the constraints from dark matter direct detection experiments.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures. v2: increased statistics, to appear in EPJ

    Proximity effect at superconducting Sn-Bi2Se3 interface

    We have investigated the conductance spectra of Sn-Bi2Se3 interface junctions down to 250 mK and in different magnetic fields. A number of conductance anomalies were observed below the superconducting transition temperature of Sn, including a small gap different from that of Sn, and a zero-bias conductance peak growing up at lower temperatures. We discussed the possible origins of the smaller gap and the zero-bias conductance peak. These phenomena support that a proximity-effect-induced chiral superconducting phase is formed at the interface between the superconducting Sn and the strong spin-orbit coupling material Bi2Se3.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

    Centrality Dependence of the High p_T Charged Hadron Suppression in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 130 GeV

    PHENIX has measured the centrality dependence of charged hadron p_T spectra from central Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=130 GeV. The truncated mean p_T decreases with centrality for p_T > 2 GeV/c, indicating an apparent reduction of the contribution from hard scattering to high p_T hadron production. For central collisions the yield at high p_T is shown to be suppressed compared to binary nucleon-nucleon collision scaling of p+p data. This suppression is monotonically increasing with centrality, but most of the change occurs below 30% centrality, i.e. for collisions with less than about 140 participating nucleons. The observed p_T and centrality dependence is consistent with the particle production predicted by models including hard scattering and subsequent energy loss of the scattered partons in the dense matter created in the collisions.Comment: 7 pages text, LaTeX, 6 figures, 2 tables, 307 authors, resubmitted to Phys.     Single Electrons from Heavy Flavor Decays in p+p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV

    The invariant differential cross section for inclusive electron production in p+p collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV has been measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider over the transverse momentum range $0.4 <= p_T <= 5.0 GeV/c at midrapidity (eta <= 0.35). The contribution to the inclusive electron spectrum from semileptonic decays of hadrons carrying heavy flavor, i.e. charm quarks or, at high p_T, bottom quarks, is determined via three independent methods. The resulting electron spectrum from heavy flavor decays is compared to recent leading and next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The total cross section of charm quark-antiquark pair production is determined as sigma_(c c^bar) = 0.92 +/- 0.15 (stat.) +- 0.54 (sys.) mb.Comment: 329 authors, 6 pages text, 3 figures.
