    Modeling radiation belt radial diffusion in ULF wave fields: 2. Estimating rates of radial diffusion using combined MHD and particle codes

    [1] Quantifying radial transport of radiation belt electrons in ULF wave fields is essential for understanding the variability of the trapped relativistic electrons. To estimate the radial diffusion coefficients (DLL), we follow MeV electrons in realistic magnetospheric configurations and wave fields calculated from a global MHD code. We create idealized pressure-driven MHD simulations for controlled solar wind velocities (hereafter referred to as pressure-driven Vx simulations) with ULF waves that are comparable to GOES data under similar conditions, by driving the MHD code with synthetic pressure profiles that mimic the pressure variations of a particular solar wind velocity. The ULF wave amplitude, in both magnetic and electric fields, increases at larger radial distance and during intervals with higher solar wind velocity and pressure fluctuations. To calculate DLL as a function of solar wind velocity (Vx = 400 and 600 km/s), we follow 90 degree pitch angle electrons in magnetic and electric fields of the pressure-driven Vx simulations. DLL is higher at larger radial distance and for the case with higher solar wind velocity and pressure variations. Our simulated DLL values are relatively small compared to previous studies which used larger wave fields in their estimations. For comparison, we scale our DLL values to match the wave amplitudes of the previous studies with those of the idealized MHD simulations. After the scaling, our DLL values for Vx = 600 km/s are comparable to theDLL values derived from Polar measurements during nonstorm intervals. This demonstrates the use of MHD models to quantify the effect of pressure-driven ULF waves on radiation belt electrons and thus to differentiate the radial diffusive process from other mechanisms

    Tests of redshift-space distortions models in configuration space for the analysis of the BOSS final data release

    Observations of redshift-space distortions in spectroscopic galaxy surveys offer an attractive method for observing the build-up of cosmological structure, which depends both on the expansion rate of the Universe and our theory of gravity. In preparation for analysis of redshift-space distortions from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) final data release we compare a number of analytic and phenomenological `streaming' models, specified in configuration space, to mock catalogs derived in different ways from several N-body simulations. The galaxies in each mock catalog have properties similar to those of the higher redshift galaxies measured by BOSS but differ in the details of how small-scale velocities and halo occupancy are determined. We find that all of the analytic models fit the simulations over a limited range of scales while failing at small scales. We discuss which models are most robust and on which scales they return reliable estimates of the rate of growth of structure: we find that models based on some form of resummation can fit our N-body data for BOSS-like galaxies above 30h130\,h^{-1}Mpc well enough to return unbiased parameter estimates.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, matches version accepted by MNRA

    Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter

    We propose that cold dark matter is made of Kaluza-Klein particles and explore avenues for its detection. The lightest Kaluza-Klein state is an excellent dark matter candidate if standard model particles propagate in extra dimensions and Kaluza-Klein parity is conserved. We consider Kaluza-Klein gauge bosons. In sharp contrast to the case of supersymmetric dark matter, these annihilate to hard positrons, neutrinos and photons with unsuppressed rates. Direct detection signals are also promising.     Effects of multi-stage dehumidified-air drying on the polyphenol content of Hydrocotyle bonariensis

    Traditional drying methods involve high temperatures that degrade heat-sensitive compounds. Dehumidified-air drying, an alternative to traditional drying methods, is suitable for heat-sensitive compounds; however, it consumes a large amount of energy and is comparatively expensive. In this study, a multi-chamber dehumidified-air dryer was designed to dry Hydrocotyle bonariensis, and the retention of the polyphenol content of Hydrocotyle bonariensis under various drying conditions was examined. Multi-chamber dehumidified-air drying involves two chambers; each chamber was operated at temperatures of 30, 40, and 50°C with air volumetric flow rates of 30 and 50 L/min. The results indicated that the highest retention of total phenolic content and total flavonoid content, 24.67 mg of GAE/g dry weight (DW) and 2.204 mg of catechin/g DW, respectively, was obtained at 50°C with a 50 L/min air flow rate in the first drying chamber.     Lightning strike fatalities: three case reports of military personnel in Malaysia

    Lightning strikes have been known to cause fatal injuries. However, these cases have not been adequately highlighted in Malaysia. This paper reports on three cases of military personnel who lost their lives after being struck by lightning while on operational duties. It is extremely important to implement adequate safety measures and ensure that all military personnel are adequately trained on emergency procedures, such as Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to prevent casualties of lightning strikes in future. This paper addresses several issues to avoid similar occurrences; the importance of taking extra safety precautions and recognizing signs of lightning strikes, as well as the immediate administration of CPR on victims

    A personal identification biometric system based on back-of-hand vein patterns

    This report describes research on the use of back-of-hand vein patterns as a means of uniquely identifying people. In particular it describes a prototype biometric system developed by the Australian Institute of Security and Applied Technology (AISAT). This system comprises an infrared cold source, a monochrome CCD camera, a monochrome frame-grabber, a personal computer, and custom image acquisition, processing, registration, and matching software. The image processing algorithms are based on Mathematical Morphology. Registration is performed using rotation and translation with respect to the centroid of the two-dimensional domain of a hand. Vein patterns are stored as medial axis representations. Matching involves comparing a given medial axis pattern against a library of patterns using constrained sequential correlation. The matching is two-fold: a newly acquired signature is matched against a dilated library signature, and then the library signature is matched against the dilated acquired signature; this is necessary because of the positional noise exhibited by the back-of-hand veins. The results of a cross-matching experiment for a sample of 20 adults and more than 100 hand images is detailed. In addition preliminary estimates of the false acceptance rate (FAR) and false rejection rate (FRR) for the prototype system are given. Fuzzy relaxation on an association graph is discussed as an alternative to sequential correlation for the matching of vein signatures. An example is provided (including a C program) illustrating the matching process for a pair of signatures obtained from the same hand. The example demonstrates the ability of the fuzzy relaxation method to deal with segmentation errors

    The Impact of China on Stock Returns and Volatility in the Taiwan Tourism Industry

    This paper investigates the stock returns and volatility size effects for firm performance in the Taiwan tourism industry, especially the impacts arising from the tourism policy reform that allowed mainland Chinese tourists to travel to Taiwan. Four conditional univariate GARCH models are used to estimate the volatility in the stock indexes for large and small firms in Taiwan. Daily data from 30 November 2001 to 27 February 2013 are used, which covers the period of Cross-Straits tension between China and Taiwan. The full sample period is divided into two subsamples, namely prior to and after the policy reform that encouraged Chinese tourists to Taiwan. The empirical findings confirm that there have been important changes in the volatility size effects for firm performance, regardless of firm size and estimation period. Furthermore, the risk premium reveals insignificant estimates in both time periods, while asymmetric effects are found to exist only for large firms after the policy reform. The empirical findings should be useful for financial managers and policy analysts as it provides insight into the magnitude of the volatility size effects for firm performance, how it can vary with firm size, the impacts arising from the industry policy reform, and how firm size is related to financial risk management strategy
