    The unexpected fast polymerization during the synthesis of a glycolated polythiophene

    Conjugated polymers with ethylene glycol side chains are emerging as ideal materials for bioelectronics, particularly for application in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). To improve the OECT device performance, it is important to develop an efficient synthetic strategy that will provide access to novel high-performing materials besides focusing on molecular design. While a lot of efforts are being devoted to designing of new polymers by modifying the glycol side chains, understanding how their nature affects the polymerization kinetics and eventually the polymer structure and properties is not known. In this work, we have studied the influence of the content of the ethylene glycol side chain and its linkage on the formation of the active Grignard monomer species upon Grignard metathesis in three thiophene derivatives. A strong dependence of the monomer's concentration on polymerization was noted in our study indicating that for synthesizing P3MEEMT, a high-performing OECT material, by Kumada catalyst transfer polymerization (KCTP) a minimum of 0.15 M monomer is needed. Furthermore, kinetic studies by GPC show uncontrolled polymerization behavior contrary to the controlled chain growth characteristics of the KCTP.journal articl

    Designing hollow nano gold golf balls.

    Hollow/porous nanoparticles, including nanocarriers, nanoshells, and mesoporous materials have applications in catalysis, photonics, biosensing, and delivery of theranostic agents. Using a hierarchical template synthesis scheme, we have synthesized a nanocarrier mimicking a golf ball, consisting of (i) solid silica core with a pitted gold surface and (ii) a hollow/porous gold shell without silica. The template consisted of 100 nm polystyrene beads attached to a larger silica core. Selective gold plating of the core followed by removal of the polystyrene beads produced a golf ball-like nanostructure with 100 nm pits.     A 24 hour naproxen dose on gastrointestinal distress and performance during cycling in the heat

    Using a double-blind, randomized and counterbalanced, cross-over design, we assessed naproxen's effects on gastrointestinal (GI) distress and performance in eleven volunteers (6 male, 5 female). Participants completed 4 trials: 1) placebo and ambient); 2) placebo and heat; 3) naproxen and ambient; and 4) naproxen and heat. Independent variables were one placebo or 220 mg naproxen pill every 8 h (h) for 24 h and ambient (22.7 ± 1.8°C) or thermal environment (35.7 ± 1.3°C). Participants cycled 80 min at a steady heart rate then 10 min for maximum distance. Perceived exertion was measured throughout cycling. Gastrointestinal distress was assessed pre-, during, post-, 3 h post-, and 24 h post-cycling using a GI index for upper, lower, and systemic symptoms. No statistically significant differences occurred between conditions at any time for GI symptoms or perceived exertion, distance, or heart rate during maximum effort. A 24 h naproxen dose did not significantly affect performance or cause more frequent or serious GI distress when participants were euhydrated and cycling at moderate intensity in a thermal environment

    Decision Problems for Nash Equilibria in Stochastic Games

    We analyse the computational complexity of finding Nash equilibria in stochastic multiplayer games with ω\omega-regular objectives. While the existence of an equilibrium whose payoff falls into a certain interval may be undecidable, we single out several decidable restrictions of the problem. First, restricting the search space to stationary, or pure stationary, equilibria results in problems that are typically contained in PSPACE and NP, respectively. Second, we show that the existence of an equilibrium with a binary payoff (i.e. an equilibrium where each player either wins or loses with probability 1) is decidable. We also establish that the existence of a Nash equilibrium with a certain binary payoff entails the existence of an equilibrium with the same payoff in pure, finite-state strategies.Comment: 22 pages, revised versio

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A hallmark of muscular dystrophies is the replacement of muscle by connective tissue. Muscle biopsies from patients severely affected with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) may contain few myogenic cells. Because the chromosomal contraction at 4q35 linked to FSHD is thought to cause a defect within myogenic cells, it is important to study this particular cell type, rather than the fibroblasts and adipocytes of the endomysial fibrosis, to understand the mechanism leading to myopathy.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We present a protocol to establish clonal myogenic cell lines from even severely dystrophic muscle that has been replaced mostly by fat, using overexpression of CDK4 and the catalytic component of telomerase (human telomerase reverse transcriptase; hTERT), and a subsequent cloning step. hTERT is necessary to compensate for telomere loss during <it>in vitro </it>cultivation, while CDK4 prevents a telomere-independent growth arrest affecting CD56+ myogenic cells, but not their CD56- counterpart, <it>in vitro</it>.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These immortal cell lines are valuable tools to reproducibly study the effect of the FSHD mutation within myoblasts isolated from muscles that have been severely affected by the disease, without the confounding influence of variable amounts of contaminating connective-tissue cells.</p

    The Initial Conditions of Clustered Star Formation. II. N2H+ Observations of the Ophiuchus B Core

    We present a Nobeyama 45 m Radio Telescope map and Australia Telescope Compact Array pointed observations of N2H+ 1-0 emission towards the clustered, low mass star forming Oph B Core within the Ophiuchus molecular cloud. We compare these data with previously published results of high resolution NH3 (1,1) and (2,2) observations in Oph B. We use 3D Clumpfind to identify emission features in the single-dish N2H+ map, and find that the N2H+ `clumps' match well similar features previously identified in NH3 (1,1) emission, but are frequently offset to clumps identified at similar resolution in 850 micron continuum emission. Wide line widths in the Oph B2 sub-Core indicate non-thermal motions dominate the Core kinematics, and remain transonic at densities n ~ 3 x 10^5 cm^-3 with large scatter and no trend with N(H2). Non-thermal motions in Oph B1 and B3 are subsonic with little variation, but also show no trend with H2 column density. Over all Oph B, non-thermal N2H+ line widths are substantially narrower than those traced by NH3, making it unlikely NH3 and N2H+ trace the same material, but the v_LSR of both species agree well. We find evidence for accretion in Oph B1 from the surrounding ambient gas. The NH3/N2H+ abundance ratio is larger towards starless Oph B1 than towards protostellar Oph B2, similar to recent observational results in other star-forming regions. Small-scale structure is found in the ATCA N2H+ 1-0 emission, where emission peaks are again offset from continuum emission. In particular, the ~1 M_Sun B2-MM8 clump is associated with a N2H+ emission minimum and surrounded by a broken ring-like N2H+ emission structure, suggestive of N2H+ depletion. We find a strong general trend of decreasing N2H+ abundance with increasing N(H2) in Oph B which matches that found for NH3.Comment: 55 pages (manuscript), 15 figures, ApJ accepte

    An acute naproxen dose does not affect core temperature or Interleukin-6 during cycling in a hot environment

    Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs’ anti-pyretic and anti-inflammatory effects has led some individuals to theorize these medications may blunt core body temperature (Tc) increases during exercise. We utilized a double-blind, randomized, and counterbalanced cross-over design to examine the effects of a 24-h naproxen dose (3–220 ​mg naproxen pills) and placebo (0 ​mg naproxen) on Tc and plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentrations during cycling in a hot or ambient environment. Participants (n ​= ​11; 6 male, 5 female; age ​= ​27.8 ​± ​6.5 years, weight ​= ​79.1 ​± ​17.9 ​kg, height ​= ​177 ​± ​9.5 ​cm) completed 4 conditions: 1) placebo and ambient (Control); 2) placebo and heat (Heat); 3) naproxen and ambient (Npx); and 4) naproxen and heat (NpxHeat). Dependent measures were taken before, during, and immediately after 90 ​min of cycling and then 3 ​h after cycling. Overall, Tc significantly increased pre- (37.1 ​± ​0.4 ​°C) to post-cycling (38.2 ​± ​0.3 ​°C, F1.7,67.3 ​= ​150.5, p ​< ​0.001) and decreased during rest (37.0 ​± ​0.3 ​°C, F2.0,81.5 ​= ​201.6, p ​< ​0.001). Rate of change or maximum Tc were not significantly different between conditions. IL-6 increased pre- (0.54 ​± ​0.06 ​pg/ml) to post-exercise (2.46 ​± ​0.28 ​pg/ml, p ​< ​0.001) and remained significantly higher than pre-at 3 ​h post- (1.17 ​± ​0.14 ​pg/ml, 95% CI ​= ​−1.01 to −0.23, p ​= ​0.001). No significant IL-6 differences occurred between conditions. A 24-h, over-the-counter naproxen dose did not significantly affect Tc or IL-6 among males and females cycling in hot or ambient environments
