Cryogenic characterization of commercial SiC Power MOSFETs
The cryogenic performance of two commercially available SiC power MOSFETs are presented in this work. The devices are characterised in static and dynamic tests at 10 K intervals from 20-320 K. Static current-voltage characterisation indicates that at low temperatures threshold voltage, turn-on voltage, on-state resistance, transconductance, and the body diode turn-on voltage all increase while saturation current decreases. Dynamic, 60 V, 3A switching tests within the cryogenic chamber are also reported and the trends of switching speed, losses, and total power losses, which rise at low temperature, are presented. Overall, both MOSFETs are fully operable down to 30 K with both positive and negative changes in behaviour
Long Range Hydration Effects in Electrolytic Free Suspended Black Films
The force law within free suspended black films made of negatively charged
Aerosol-OT (AOT) with added LiCl or CsCl is studied accurately using X-ray
reflectivity (ca. 1{\AA}). We find an electrolyte concentration threshold above
which a substantial additional repulsion is detected in the LiCl films, up to
distances of 100 {\AA}. We interpret this phenomenon as an augmentation of the
Debye screening length, due to the local screening of the condensed hydrophilic
counterions by the primary hydration shell.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to be published Phys. Rev. Let
Food fraud and the perceived integrity of European food imports into China
Background/AimsPersistent incidents of food fraud in China have resulted in low levels of consumer trust in the authenticity and safety of food that is domestically produced. We examined the relationship between the concerns of Chinese consumers regarding food fraud, and the role that demonstrating authenticity may play in relieving those concerns.MethodsA two-stage mixed method design research design was adopted. First, qualitative research (focus groups n = 7) was conducted in three Chinese cities, Beijing, Guangzhou and Chengdu to explore concerns held by Chinese consumers in relation to food fraud. A subsequent quantitative survey (n = 850) tested hypotheses derived from the qualitative research and theoretical literature regarding the relationship between attitudinal measures (including risk perceptions, social trust, and perceptions of benefit associated with demonstrating authenticity), and behavioral intention to purchase âauthenticâ European products using structural equation modelling.ResultsChinese consumers perceive food fraud to be a hazard that represents a food safety risk. Food hazard concern was identified to be geographically influenced. Consumers in Chengdu (tier 2 city) possessed higher levels of hazard concern compared to consumers in Beijing and Guangzhou (tier 1). Structural trust (i.e. trust in actors and the governance of the food supply chain) was not a significant predictor of attitude and intention to purchase authenticated food products. Consumers were shown to have developed ârisk-relievingâ strategies to compensate for the lack of trust in Chinese food and the dissonance experienced as a consequence of food fraud. Indexical and iconic authenticity cues provided by food manufacturers and regulators were important elements of product evaluations, although geographical differences in their perceived importance were observed.ConclusionsTargeted communication of authenticity assurance measures, including; regulations; enforcement; product testing; and actions taken by industry may improve Chinese consumer trust in the domestic food supply chain and reduce consumer concerns regarding the food safety risks associated with food fraud. To support product differentiation and retain prestige, European food manufactures operating within the Chinese market should recognise regional disparities in consumer risk perceptions regarding food fraud and the importance of personal risk mitigation strategies adopted by Chinese consumers to support the identification of authentic products
Structure and mechanism of acetolactate decarboxylase
Acetolactate decarboxylase catalyzes the conversion of both enantiomers of acetolactate to the (R)-enantiomer of acetoin, via a mechanism that has been shown to involve a prior rearrangement of the non-natural (R)-enantiomer substrate to the natural (S)-enantiomer. In this paper, a series of crystal structures of ALDC complex with designed transition state mimics are reported. These structures, coupled with inhibition studies and site-directed mutagenesis provide an improved understanding of the molecular processes involved in the stereoselective decarboxylation/protonation events. A mechanism for the transformation of each enantiomer of acetolactate is proposed
Measurement of the Lifetime Difference in the B_s^0 System
We present a study of the decay B_s^0 -> J/psi phi We obtain the CP-odd
fraction in the final state at time zero, R_perp = 0.16 +/- 0.10 (stat) +/-
0.02 (syst), the average lifetime of the (B_s, B_sbar) system, tau (B_s^0)
=1.39^{+0.13}_{-0.16} (stat) ^{+0.01}_{-0.02} (syst) ps, and the relative width
difference between the heavy and light mass eigenstates, Delta Gamma/Gamma =
(Gamma_L - Gamma_H)/Gamma =0.24^{+0.28}_{-0.38} (stat) ^{+0.03}_{-0.04} (syst).
With the additional constraint from the world average of the B_s^0$lifetime
measurements using semileptonic decays, we find tau (B_s^0)= 1.39 +/- 0.06 ~ps
and Delta Gamma/\Gamma = 0.25^{+0.14}_{-0.15}. For the ratio of the B_s^0 and
B^0 lifetimes we obtain tau(B_s^0)/tau(B^0)} = 0.91 +/- 0.09 (stat) +/- 0.003
(syst).Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett. FERMILAB-PUB-05-324-
Measurement of Semileptonic Branching Fractions of B Mesons to Narrow D** States
Using the data accumulated in 2002-2004 with the DO detector in
proton-antiproton collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron collider with
centre-of-mass energy 1.96 TeV, the branching fractions of the decays B ->
\bar{D}_1^0(2420) \mu^+ \nu_\mu X and B -> \bar{D}_2^{*0}(2460) \mu^+ \nu_\mu X
and their ratio have been measured: BR(\bar{b}->B) \cdot BR(B-> \bar{D}_1^0
\mu^+ \nu_\mu X) \cdot BR(\bar{D}_1^0 -> D*- pi+) =
(0.087+-0.007(stat)+-0.014(syst))%; BR(\bar{b}->B)\cdot BR(B->D_2^{*0} \mu^+
\nu_\mu X) \cdot BR(\bar{D}_2^{*0} -> D*- \pi^+) =
(0.035+-0.007(stat)+-0.008(syst))%; and (BR(B -> \bar{D}_2^{*0} \mu^+ \nu_\mu
X)BR(D2*0->D*- pi+)) / (BR(B -> \bar{D}_1^{0} \mu^+ \nu_\mu X)\cdot
BR(\bar{D}_1^{0}->D*- \pi^+)) = 0.39+-0.09(stat)+-0.12(syst), where the charge
conjugated states are always implied.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Search for right-handed W bosons in top quark decay
We present a measurement of the fraction f+ of right-handed W bosons produced
in top quark decays, based on a candidate sample of events in the
lepton+jets decay mode. These data correspond to an integrated luminosity of
230pb^-1, collected by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron
Collider at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. We use a constrained fit to reconstruct the
kinematics of the and decay products, which allows for the
measurement of the leptonic decay angle for each event. By comparing
the distribution from the data with those for the expected
background and signal for various values of f+, we find
f+=0.00+-0.13(stat)+-0.07(syst). This measurement is consistent with the
standard model prediction of f+=3.6x10^-4.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review D Rapid Communications 7 pages, 3

Search for Large Extra Spatial Dimensions in Dimuon Production with the D0 Detector
We present the results of a search for the effects of large extra spatial
dimensions in collisions at 1.96 TeV in events
containing a pair of energetic muons. The data correspond to 246 \ipb of
integrated luminosity collected by the \D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron
Collider. Good agreement with the expected background was found, yielding no
evidence for large extra dimensions. We set 95% C.L. lower limits on the
fundamental Planck scale between 0.85 TeV and 1.27 TeV within several
formalisms. These are the most stringent limits achieved in the dimuon channel
to date.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Published in Phys. Rev. Lett. Minor

Three-dimensional terahertz imaging using swept-frequency feedback interferometry with a quantum cascade laser
We demonstrate coherent three-dimensional terahertz imaging by frequency modulation of a quantum cascade laser in a compact and experimentally simple self-mixing scheme. Through this approach we can realize significantly faster acquisition rates compared to previous schemes employing longitudinal mechanical scanning of a sample. We achieve a depth resolution of better than 0.1 ÎŒm with a power noise spectral density below â50 dB/Hz, for a sampling time of 10 ms/pixel
