Treball Final de Màster Universitari en Noves Tendències i Processos d'Innovació en Comunicació. Codi: SAG004.

How many Physical Education hours do students desire? It depends on the (de-) motivating teaching style perceived

A more integrative and fine-grained model called circumplex approach, which classifies (de-)motivating teaching style into eight (de-)motivating approaches based on the degree of need support/thwarting and directiveness, has recently been proposed in the educational context. However, the evidence so far on how each of (de-)motivating teaching approaches may be related to different (mal-)adaptive outcomes is scarce in the PE context. Grounded in this circumplex model, the present study aims to examine differences in the number of PE hours desired by students in terms of students’ perceptions of (de-)motivating teaching approaches. An intentional sample of 669 secondary students (Mage= 14.65; SD = 1.47; 52 % girls), aged between 12 and 17 years participated in this cross-sectional study. The results show that students who would like to have more and the same desired PE hours as usual reported perceived significantly higher values in participative, attuning, guiding, clarifying, and demanding approaches from their PE teachers than those who desired fewer PE hours than usual. In addition, students who reported fewer desired PE hours than usual perceived significantly higher values in the abandoning approach from their PE teachers in comparison with students who desired more and the same PE hours. Results highlighted the importance of PE teachers developing autonomy-supportive and structuring approaches (i.e., participative, attuning, guiding, and clarifying) and avoiding chaotic approaches (i.e., abandoning) to foster adaptive students’ affective outcomes

Object Recognition in Noisy RGB-D Data

The object recognition task on 3D scenes is a growing research field that faces some problems relative to the use of 3D point clouds. In this work, we focus on dealing with noisy clouds through the use of the Growing Neural Gas (GNG) network filtering algorithm. Another challenge is the selection of the right keypoints detection method, that allows to identify a model into a scene cloud. The GNG method is able to represent the input data with a desired resolution while preserving the topology of the input space. Experiments show how the introduction of the GNG method yields better recognitions results than others filtering algorithms when noise is present. The object recognition task on 3D scenes is a growing research field that faces some problems relative to the use of 3D point clouds. Visual descriptors are widely used in several recognition and classification tasks in robotics. The main challenge for these tasks is to find a descriptor that could represent the image content without losing representative information of the image. Nowadays, there exists a wide range of visual descriptors computed with computer vision techniques and different pooling strategies. This paper proposes a novel way for building image descriptors using an external tool, namely: Clarifai. This is a remote web tool that allows to automatically describe an input image using semantic tags, and these tags are used to generate our descriptor. The descriptor generation procedure has been tested in the ViDRILO dataset, where it has been compared and merged with some well-known descriptors. Moreover, subset variable selection techniques have been evaluated. The experimental results show that our descriptor is competitive in classification tasks with the results obtained with other kind of descriptors.Visual descriptors are widely used in several recognition and classification tasks in robotics.

    Get PDF

    LexToMap: lexical-based topological mapping

    Get PDF
Any robot should be provided with a proper representation of its environment in order to perform navigation and other tasks. In addition to metrical approaches, topological mapping generates graph representations in which nodes and edges correspond to locations and transitions. In this article, we present LexToMap, a topological mapping procedure that relies on image annotations. These annotations, represented in this work by lexical labels, are obtained from pre-trained deep learning models, namely CNNs, and are used to estimate image similarities. Moreover, the lexical labels contribute to the descriptive capabilities of the topological maps. The proposal has been evaluated using the KTH-IDOL 2 data-set, which consists of image sequences acquired within an indoor environment under three different lighting conditions. The generality of the procedure as well as the descriptive capabilities of the generated maps validate the proposal. This work was supported by the Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad of the Spanish Government, supported with Feder funds, under grant DPI2013-40534-R and TIN2015-66972-C5-2-R; Consejería de Educación, Cultura y Deportes of the JCCM regional government under project PPII-2014- 015-P. The accelerated growth of the percentage of elder people and persons with brain injury-related conditions and who are intellectually challenged are some of the main concerns of the developed countries. These persons often require special cares and even almost permanent overseers that help them to carry out diary tasks. With this issue in mind, we propose an automated schedule system which is deployed on a social robot. The robot keeps track of the tasks that the patient has to fulfill in a diary basis. When a task is triggered, the robot guides the patient through its completion. The system is also able to detect if the steps are being properly carried out or not, issuing alerts in that case. To do so, an ensemble of deep learning techniques is used. The schedule is customizable by the carers and authorized relatives. Our system could enhance the quality of life of the patients and improve their self-autonomy. Analysis of Synaptic Proteins in the Cerebrospinal Fluid as a New Tool in the Study of Inborn Errors of Neurotransmission

    Get PDF
Abstract In a few rare diseases, specialised studies in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are required to identify the underlying metabolic disorder. We aimed to explore the possibility of detecting key synaptic proteins in the CSF, in particular dopaminergic and gabaergic, as new procedures that could be useful for both pathophysiological and diagnostic purposes in investigation of inherited disorders of neurotransmission. Dopamine receptor type 2 (D2R), dopamine transporter (DAT) and vesicular monoamine transporter type 2 (VMAT2) were analysed in CSF samplesfrom 30 healthy controls (11 days to 17 years) by western blot analysis. Because VMAT2 was the only protein with intracellular localisation, and in order to compare results, GABA vesicular transporter, which is another intracellular protein, was also studied. Spearman’s correlation and Student’s t tests were applied to compare optical density signals between different proteins. All these synaptic proteins could be easily detected and quantified in the CSF. DAT, D2R and GABA VT expression decrease with age, particularly in the first months of life, reflecting the expected intense synaptic activity and neuronal circuitry formation. A statistically significant relationship was found between D2R and DAT expression, reinforcing the previous evidence of DAT regulation by D2R. To our knowledge, there are no previous studies on human CSF reporting a reliable analysis of these proteins. These kinds of studies could help elucidate new causes of disturbed dopaminergic and gabaergic transmission as well as understanding different responses to L-dopa in inherited disorders affecting dopamine metabolism. Moreover, this approach to synaptic activity in vivo can be extended to different groups of proteins and diseases

The ATP7A gene encodes a copper transporter whose mutations cause Menkes disease, occipital horn syndrome (OHS), and, less frequently, ATP7A-related distal hereditary motor neuropathy (dHMN). Here we describe a family with OHS caused by a novel mutation in the ATP7A gene, including a patient with a comorbid dHMN that worsened markedly after being treated with copper histidinate.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
