Proof Tactics for Theorem Proving Graph Grammars through Rodin

Get PDF
Graph grammar is a formal language suitable for the specification of distributed and concurrent systems. Theorem proving is a technique that allows the verification of systems with huge (and infinite) state space. One of the disadvantages of theorem proving graph grammars (and theorem proving in general) is the specific mathematical knowledge required from the user for concluding the proofs. Previous works have proposed proof strategies to help the developer in the verification process when adopting such approach, firstly establishing proof tactics for some properties and after proposing a visual representation for them. This paper extends the set of proposed tactics, with the aim of expanding the available strategies and encouraging the use of such a technique

Decompressive craniectomy (DC) has demonstrated efficacy in reducing mortality in hemispheric infarction of the middle cerebral artery. The aim of our study was to compare the outcome of patients submitted to DC to patients treated in a conservative way. Eighteen patients were submitted to DC and 14 received conservative treatment. Neurological status was assessed by the Glasgow Coma Score and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score. Mortality, modified Rankin Scale and Barthel Index scores were assessed at 90 days to evaluate outcome. We did not observe reduction in overall mortality and functional outcome in patients submitted to DC. The differences between our group and previously published series are probably related to the neurological status of the patients at the time of therapeutic decision. Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) Department of Neurology and NeurosurgeryCentro de Medicina Diagnóstica FleuryUNIFESP, Department of Neurology and NeurosurgerySciEL

OBJECTIVE: Refractory status epilepticus is one of the most life-threatening neurological emergencies and is characterized by high morbidity and mortality. Additionally, the use of anti-inflammatory drugs during this period is very controversial. Thus, this study has been designed to analyze the effect of a low dose of indomethacin (a COX inhibitor) on the expression of inflammatory molecules. METHOD: The hippocampus of rats submitted to pilocarpine-induced long-lasting status epilepticus was analyzed to determine the expression of inflammatory molecules with RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Compared with controls, reduced levels of the kinin B2 receptors IL1β and TNFα were found in the hippocampus of rats submitted to long-lasting status epilepticus and treated with indomethacin. CONCLUSIONS: These data show that low doses of indomethacin could be employed to minimize inflammation during long-lasting status epilepticus

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)The purpose of this study was to synthesize TiO2-polymer composites able to act as photocatalyst membranes. TiO2 catalysts were prepared using the sol-gel method to contain 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 wt.% of embedded Ag particles, subsequently incorporated into natural rubber latex at a weight fraction of 15%. Samples of these ceramic powders were suspended in a latex emulsion (natural rubber), cast in Petri dishes and slowly dried in an oven. The resulting materials were evaluated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, and photocatalytic assaying using methylene blue as an organic pollutant reference. All composite membranes exhibited good photoactivity conferred by TiO2 powder, with 98% dye fading after 300 min of ultraviolet irradiation. The purpose of this study was to synthesize TiO2-polymer composites able to act as photocatalyst membranes. High-resolution synchrotron-based X-ray microtomography as a tool to unveil the three-dimensional neuronal architecture of the brain

The assessment of neuronal number, spatial organization and connectivity is fundamental for a complete understanding of brain function. However, the evaluation of the three-dimensional (3D) brain cytoarchitecture at cellular resolution persists as a great challenge in the field of neuroscience. In this context, X-ray microtomography has shown to be a valuable non-destructive tool for imaging a broad range of samples, from dense materials to soft biological specimens, arisen as a new method for deciphering the cytoarchitecture and connectivity of the brain. In this work we present a method for imaging whole neurons in the brain, combining synchrotron-based X-ray microtomography with the Golgi-Cox mercury-based impregnation protocol. In contrast to optical 3D techniques, the approach shown here does neither require tissue slicing or clearing, and allows the investigation of several cells within a 3D region of the brain

We investigated a relationship between the FLAIR signal found in mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS) and inflammation. Twenty nine patients were selected through clinical and MRI analysis and submitted to cortico-amygdalo-hippocampectomy to seizure control. Glutamate, TNFα, IL1, nitric oxide (NO) levels and immunostaining against IL1β and CD45 was performed. Control tissues (n=10) were obtained after autopsy of patients without neurological disorders. The glutamate was decreased in the temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) -MTS group (p<0.001), suggesting increased release of this neurotransmitter. The IL1β and TNFα were increased in the hippocampus (p<0.05) demonstrating an active inflammatory process. A positive linear correlation between FLAIR signal and NO and IL1β levels and a negative linear correlation between FLAIR signal and glutamate concentration was found. Lymphocytes infiltrates were present in hippocampi of TLE patients.
