Socioeconomic disparities in diet vary according to migration status among adolescents in Belgium
Little information concerning social disparities in adolescent dietary habits is currently available, especially regarding migration status. The aim of the present study was to estimate socioeconomic disparities in dietary habits of school adolescents from different migration backgrounds. In the 2014 cross-sectional Health Behavior in School-Aged Children survey in Belgium, food consumption was estimated using a self-administrated short food frequency questionnaire. In total, 19,172 school adolescents aged 10-19 years were included in analyses. Multilevel multiple binary and multinomial logistic regressions were performed, stratified by migration status (natives, 2nd- and 1st-generation immigrants). Overall, immigrants more frequently consumed both healthy and unhealthy foods. Indeed, 32.4% of 1st-generation immigrants, 26.5% of 2nd-generation immigrants, and 16.7% of natives consumed fish two days a week. Compared to those having a high family affluence scale (FAS), adolescents with a low FAS were more likely to consume chips and fries once a day (vs. <once a day: Natives aRRR = 1.39 (95%CI: 1.12-1.73); NS in immigrants). Immigrants at schools in Flanders were less likely than those in Brussels to consume sugar-sweetened beverages 2-6 days a week (vs. once a week: Natives aRRR = 1.86 (95%CI: 1.32-2.62); 2nd-generation immigrants aRRR = 1.52 (1.11-2.09); NS in 1st-generation immigrants). The migration gradient observed here underlines a process of acculturation. Narrower socioeconomic disparities in immigrant dietary habits compared with natives suggest that such habits are primarily defined by culture of origin. Nutrition interventions should thus include cultural components of dietary habits
Etude cinétique de la complexation du cuivre en milieu hydrogénocarbonate par électrochimie
La détermination de la capacité complexante des eaux naturelles est généralement effectuée par titrage ampérométrique du cuivre à pH fixé. Beaucoup, sinon tous les tampons classiques utilisés perturbent les études de spéciation du cuivre par formation de complexes peu stables. Dans ce travail nous nous sommes intéressés à la complexation du cuivre par les ions carbonates généralement présents dans les eaux naturelles. Afin de mener à bien notre étude, nous avons mesuré, dans un milieu synthétique de force ionique et pH contrôlés (KNO3 0,02 M + NaHCO3 2,38.10-3 M) toutes les constantes des divers équilibres prévisibles : produits de solubilité de l'hydroxyde de cuivre Cu(OH)2 et de la malachite Cu2 (OH)2 CO3, constante de formation du carbonate de cuivre dissous CuCO3. A des valeurs de pH suffisamment faibles, la formation du complexe CUOH+ peut étre négligée. Les trois autres réactions ont été suivies race aux mesures combinées, d'une part du pH et, d'autre part, de l'activité en ion Cu2+ libre ou hydraté par ionométrie. Compte tenu des propriétés acido-basiques des diverses espèces, les mesures ont été effectuées à divers pH compris entre 5,5 et 8. Le complexe CuCO30étant l'espèce majoritaire dans ces solutions, sa labilité, pouvant perturber follement les déterminations des capacités complexantes par titrage ampérométrique, a été étudiée par diverses méthodes électrochimiques. La polarographie à tension sinusoïdale surimposée (AC) a indiqué une réduction rapide du cuivre (II) sur électrode de mercure. Deux vagues ont été obtenues en voltampérométrie sur électrode tournante à disque de platine (RDE), ce dédoublement étant d'origine cinétique compte tenu de l'évolution de ces vagues avec la température. Une estimation des valeurs des constantes de vitesse de formation kf et de dissociation kb, a permis de montrer la rapidité des réactions mises en jeu et la labilité du complexe CuCO30.The determination of the complexing capacity of natural waters by amperometric copper (II) titrations must be made in pH-buffered solutions. Most if not all of classical buffers influence copper speciation through the formation of weak complexes. This paper deals with an attempt to use the naturally occurring hydrogenocarbonate buffet. A detailed study of copper (II) chemistry in synthetic solutions at controlled ionic strength and pH (0.02 mol.l-1 KNO3, 2.38 mol.l-1 NaHCO3, controlled Pco2) was carried out. In these solutions copper (Il) chemistry may involve precipitation of copper hydroxide Cu(OH)2, copper hydroxycarbonate Cu2(OH)2 CO3 (malachite) and formation of the soluble complexes CuCO30 and CuOH+. At low enough values of pH CuOH+ formation may be neglected. The three other reactions are studied using copper ionometry with a specific electrode and equilibrium constants determined in the 5.5 to 8.0 pH range. As CuCO30 is a major species in these solutions its lability is of major concern for the validity of the amperometric determination of the complexing capacity by copper (II) titration and bas been studied by several electrochemical approaches. AC polarography indicated a rapid reduction of copper (II) on the mercury electrode. Two waves were obtained for the deposition of copper (Il) by voltamperometry with a rotated platinum disk electrode (RDE) presenting the characteristics of a kinetic control. However the values of the forward (kf) and backward (kb) reaction rate constants for CuCO30 formation or dissociation seem too high for a precise determination
Free Zn2+ determination in natural freshwater of the Pyrenees: towards on-site measurements with AGNES
An on-site methodology has been developed for the direct determination of free Zn2+ with AGNES (Absence of Gradients and Nernstian Equilibrium Stripping) in freshwaters. This implementation includes: i) the use of screen printed electrodes, which provide good limits of detection and easy transportation and deployment; ii) no need for sample purging; iii) a calibration in a synthetic river solution that reproduces well the speciation changes of the natural samples and allows the oxygen interferences to be minimised; iv) the addition of a background electrolyte up to 0.01 mol L-1 in both the calibration and freshwater samples; v) chemical stripping chronopotentiometry as the quantification stage of AGNES. This procedure minimizes the effects of working at low ionic strength and in the presence of dissolved oxygen. In the laboratory, the methodology was checked with different natural samples taken from rivers Garonne, Gave de Cauterets and Gave de Pau in the Pyrenees. Results appeared in good agreement with theoretical estimations computed from Visual Minteq. On-site measurements were performed for the first time with AGNES in the Gave de Cauterets in Soulom (France) and the results were corroborated with purged measurements performed in the laboratory.English language editing by Holly Pearson is acknowledged. Dietary quality among men and women in 187 countries in 1990 and 2010: a systematic assessment.
BACKGROUND: Healthy dietary patterns are a global priority to reduce non-communicable diseases. Yet neither worldwide patterns of diets nor their trends with time are well established. We aimed to characterise global changes (or trends) in dietary patterns nationally and regionally and to assess heterogeneity by age, sex, national income, and type of dietary pattern. METHODS: In this systematic assessment, we evaluated global consumption of key dietary items (foods and nutrients) by region, nation, age, and sex in 1990 and 2010. Consumption data were evaluated from 325 surveys (71·7% nationally representative) covering 88·7% of the global adult population. Two types of dietary pattern were assessed: one reflecting greater consumption of ten healthy dietary items and the other based on lesser consumption of seven unhealthy dietary items. The mean intakes of each dietary factor were divided into quintiles, and each quintile was assigned an ordinal score, with higher scores being equivalent to healthier diets (range 0-100). The dietary patterns were assessed by hierarchical linear regression including country, age, sex, national income, and time as exploratory variables. FINDINGS: From 1990 to 2010, diets based on healthy items improved globally (by 2·2 points, 95% uncertainty interval (UI) 0·9 to 3·5), whereas diets based on unhealthy items worsened (-2·5, -3·3 to -1·7). In 2010, the global mean scores were 44·0 (SD 10·5) for the healthy pattern and 52·1 (18·6) for the unhealthy pattern, with weak intercorrelation (r=-0·08) between countries. On average, better diets were seen in older adults compared with younger adults, and in women compared with men (p<0·0001 each). Compared with low-income nations, high-income nations had better diets based on healthy items (+2·5 points, 95% UI 0·3 to 4·1), but substantially poorer diets based on unhealthy items (-33·0, -37·8 to -28·3). Diets and their trends were very heterogeneous across the world regions. For example, both types of dietary patterns improved in high-income countries, but worsened in some low-income countries in Africa and Asia. Middle-income countries showed the largest improvement in dietary patterns based on healthy items, but the largest deterioration in dietary patterns based on unhealthy items. INTERPRETATION: Consumption of healthy items improved, while consumption of unhealthy items worsened across the world, with heterogeneity across regions and countries. These global data provide the best estimates to date of nutrition transitions across the world and inform policies and priorities for reducing the health and economic burdens of poor diet quality. Socioeconomic Indicators Are Independently Associated with Nutrient Intake in French Adults: A DEDIPAC Study
Studies have suggested differential associations of specific indicators of socioeconomic
position (SEP) with nutrient intake and a cumulative effect of these indicators on diet. We investigated
the independent association of SEP indicators (education, income, occupation) with nutrient intake
and their effect modification. This cross-sectional analysis included 91,900 French adults from the
NutriNet-Santé cohort. Nutrient intake was estimated using three 24-h records. We investigated
associations between the three SEP factors and nutrient intake using sex-stratified analysis of
covariance, adjusted for age and energy intake, and associations between income and nutrient
intake stratified by education and occupation. Low educated participants had higher protein and
cholesterol intakes and lower fibre, vitamin C and beta-carotene intakes. Low income individuals
had higher complex carbohydrate intakes, and lower magnesium, potassium, folate and vitamin C
intakes. Intakes of vitamin D and alcohol were lower in low occupation individuals. Higher income
was associated with higher intakes of fibre, protein, magnesium, potassium, beta-carotene, and folate
among low educated persons only, highlighting effect modification. Lower SEP, particularly low
education, was associated with lower intakes of nutrients required for a healthy diet. Each SEP
indicator was associated with specific differences in nutrient intake suggesting that they underpin
different social processes
Weight status is associated with cross-sectional trajectories of motor co-ordination across childhood
Background Research indicates the development of motor co-ordination (MC) may be an
important contributing factor to positive or negative weight trajectories across childhood.
Objectives To analyse cross-sectional associations between MC and weight status in children (boys
n = 3344 – girls n = 3281), aged 6–11 years and assess overweight/obese risk across different ages.
Methods Body mass index (BMI) was calculated [body mass (kg)/height (m2)]. MC was evaluated
using the Körperkoordination Test für Kinder (KTK) and a motor quotient (MQ) was calculated.MQ
distribution data were split into tertiles. The effect of age, sex and MQ tertiles on BMI and MC was
tested with a factorial ANOVA. A logistic regression also was performed to calculate odd ratios (OR)
for being overweight/obese at each age.
Results Children with higher MQ demonstrated lower BMI levels (F(2,6224) = 222.09; P < 0.001).
Differences in BMI among MQ tertiles became larger across age (F(10,6224) = 4.53; P < 0.001). The OR
of being overweight/obese in both sexes within the lowest MQ tertile increased in each age group
from 6 to 11 years. Specifically, OR increased from 2.26 to 27.77 and from 1.87 to 6.81 in boys and
girls respectively.
Conclusions Children with low levels of MC have a higher risk of being overweight/obese and this
risk increases with age
National, regional, and global trends in adult overweight and obesity prevalences
Background: Overweight and obesity prevalence are commonly used for public and policy communication of the extent of the obesity epidemic, yet comparable estimates of trends in overweight and obesity prevalence by country are not available. Methods: We estimated trends between 1980 and 2008 in overweight and obesity prevalence and their uncertainty for adults 20 years of age and older in 199 countries and territories. Data were from a previous study, which used a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate mean body mass index (BMI) based on published and unpublished health examination surveys and epidemiologic studies. Here, we used the estimated mean BMIs in a regression model to predict overweight and obesity prevalence by age, country, year, and sex. The uncertainty of the estimates included both those of the Bayesian hierarchical model and the uncertainty due to cross-walking from mean BMI to overweight and obesity prevalence. Results: The global age-standardized prevalence of obesity nearly doubled from 6.4% (95% uncertainty interval 5.7-7.2%) in 1980 to 12.0% (11.5-12.5%) in 2008. Half of this rise occurred in the 20 years between 1980 and 2000, and half occurred in the 8 years between 2000 and 2008. The age-standardized prevalence of overweight increased from 24.6% (22.7-26.7%) to 34.4% (33.2-35.5%) during the same 28-year period. In 2008, female obesity prevalence ranged from 1.4% (0.7-2.2%) in Bangladesh and 1.5% (0.9-2.4%) in Madagascar to 70.4% (61.9-78.9%) in Tonga and 74.8% (66.7-82.1%) in Nauru. Male obesity was below 1% in Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Ethiopia, and was highest in Cook Islands (60.1%, 52.6-67.6%) and Nauru (67.9%, 60.5-75.0%). Conclusions: Globally, the prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased since 1980, and the increase has accelerated. Although obesity increased in most countries, levels and trends varied substantially. These data on trends in overweight and obesity may be used to set targets for obesity prevalence as requested at the United Nations high-level meeting on Prevention and Control of NCDs
Association of socioeconomic status with overall overweight and central obesity in men and women: the French Nutrition and Health Survey 2006
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Identification of subpopulations at high risk of overweight and obesity is crucial for prevention and management of obesity in different socioeconomic status (SES) categories. The objective of the study was to describe disparities in the prevalence of overweight and obesity across socioeconomic status (SES) groups in 18–74 year-old French adults.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Analyses were based on a multistage stratified random sample of non-institutionalized adults aged 18–74-years-old from the French Nutrition and Health Survey (ENNS), a cross-sectional national survey carried out in 2006/2007. Collected data included measured anthropometry (weight, height and waist circumference (WC)), demographic and SES data (occupation, education and frequency of holiday trips as a marker of family income). SES factors associated with overweight (BMI ≥ 25) and central obesity (WC above gender-specific references) were identified using multiple logistic regression.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Almost half (49.3%) of French adults were overweight or obese and 16.9% were obese. In men, the risk of overall overweight or obesity was associated with occupation (p < 0.05), whereas the risk of central obesity was independently associated with occupation (p < 0.05) and frequency of holiday trips (p < 0.01). In women, both overall and central overweight and obesity were independently associated with educational level (respectively p < 10<sup>-3 </sup>and p < 10<sup>-3</sup>) and frequency of holiday trips (respectively p < 0.05 and p < 10<sup>-3</sup>).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The prevalence of overweight and obesity was found to be similar to that of several neighbouring western European countries, and lower than the UK and eastern Europe. Risk of being overweight or obese varied across SES groups both in men and women, but associations were different between men and women, indicating differing determinants.</p
