Newton and Leibniz on Non-substantival Space

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to analyze Leibniz and Newton’s conception of space, and to point out where their agreements and disagreements lie with respect to its mode of existence. I shall offer a definite characterization of Leibniz and Newton’s conceptions of space. I will show that, according to their own concepts of substance, both Newtonian and Leibnizian spaces are not substantival. The reason of that consists in the fact that space is not capable of action. Moreover, there is a sense in which space is relational, because their parts are individuated only by means of their mutual relations

According to all traditional theories of confirmation, statements such as “E confirms H” (where H is a hypothesis and E is the evidence that supports H) are a priori. Peter Achinstein has recently challenged this orthodox position. He claims that at least some confirmation statements are empirical. In this paper I criticize this thesis. I first show that Achinstein´s arguments are either flawed or inconclusive. I then argue that there are strong reasons to conceive of all confirmation statements as a priori. I conclude that inductive logic, if possible, must be a priori knowledge

“Psychosocial risks at work: analysis of their impact on the health of employees, organizations, health systems and social security” is a research project that is approved by the SECyT-UNLP. It takes place since 2014 at the Faculty of Economics of UNLP. The research team is an interdisciplinary group of professionals and university students from different field such as economics, psychology, sociology, medicine and social work. From this perspective, the aim is to reach an integrated and holistic view of the Psychosocial Risks at Work (PSRW). The study of PSRW is very important due to the impact of them in the development of the organizations, working conditions, life of workers and, its inherent financial cost of health system and social security. The main objective of this project is to explore, identify and describe perceptions of the PSRW which occur among non-professional employees at UNLP and the manifestations of health-illness process in workers and their psychological strategies to face them. Finally, it is expected to analyze the consequences of the PSRW in socioeconomic dimensions of the organizations as well.Facultad de Psicologí

Exponential integrators: tensor structured problems and applications

    Get PDF
The solution of stiff systems of Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs), that typically arise after spatial discretization of many important evolutionary Partial Differential Equations (PDEs), constitutes a topic of wide interest in numerical analysis. A prominent way to numerically integrate such systems involves using exponential integrators. In general, these kinds of schemes do not require the solution of (non)linear systems but rather the action of the matrix exponential and of some specific exponential-like functions (known in the literature as phi-functions). In this PhD thesis we aim at presenting efficient tensor-based tools to approximate such actions, both from a theoretical and from a practical point of view, when the problem has an underlying Kronecker sum structure. Moreover, we investigate the application of exponential integrators to compute numerical solutions of important equations in various fields, such as plasma physics, mean-field optimal control and computational chemistry. In any case, we provide several numerical examples and we perform extensive simulations, eventually exploiting modern hardware architectures such as multi-core Central Processing Units (CPUs) and Graphic Processing Units (GPUs). The results globally show the effectiveness and the superiority of the different approaches proposed

Canopy Cover, Impermeability, and Green Space in Pennsylvania Redlined Neighborhoods

Previous studies have explored the relationship between redlining and canopy cover by using percent canopy cover. This data type can miss low-density trees that are common in urban areas, differences between parks and street trees, and differences in the size of the green space. With a distinction between parks and street trees, we are able to determine what types of green space redlined communities have access to, since different types of green space have different kinds of impacts on the community. This study aims to analyze the relationship between previously redlined Pennsylvania neighborhoods and their current canopy impermeability, using high resolution tree canopy cover data. As was hypothesized, both York and Philadelphia grade D neighborhoods had less green space, smaller areas of contiguous green space, and were farther from green space. This perpetuates the cycle of systemic racism in urban communities and reinforces environmental injustices

Una reivindicaciĂłn de los experimentos cruciales

in this paper i assess Pierre Duhem’s criticism of crucial experiments, and argue that we have reasons to vindicate their existence. i then analize the experiments carried out by Fizeau and Foucault in 1850, and criticize Duhem’s interpretation of their results. i contend that the results of crucial experiences can be described in terms that are neutral with respect to the competing theories. For that reason an experimental result is relatively stable and open to different interpretations in the light of new theories. i conclude by distinguishing successful crucial experiments from decisive experiments. The former are meant to provide evidence that confirms one theory and disconfirms its rivals, but not necessarily to provide sufficient reasons for accepting or rejecting one of those theories.
