UIDB/00693/2020 UIDP/00693/2020The literature reports the benefits of multimodal interaction with the maternal voice for preterm dyads in kangaroo care. Little is known about multimodal interaction and vocal modulation between preterm mother–twin dyads. This study aims to deepen the knowledge about multimodal interaction (maternal touch, mother’s and infants’ vocalizations and infants’ gaze) between a mother and her twin preterm infants (twin 1 [female] and twin 2 [male]) during speech and humming in kangaroo care. A microanalytical case study was carried out using ELAN, PRAAT, and MAXQDA software. Descriptive and comparative analysis was performed using SPSS software. We observed: (1) significantly longer humming phrases to twin 2 than to twin 1 (p = 0.002), (2) significantly longer instances of maternal touch in humming than in speech to twin 1 (p = 0.000), (3) a significant increase in the pitch of maternal speech after twin 2 gazed (p = 0.002), and (4) a significant increase of pitch in humming after twin 1 vocalized (p = 0.026). This exploratory study contributes to questioning the role of maternal touch during humming in kangaroo care, as well as the mediating role of the infant’s gender and visual and vocal behavior in the tonal change of humming or speech.publishersversionpublishe

IN COMPANION REPTILES: A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY - The maintenance of reptiles as pets has increased in recent years in Europe. These animals can be reservoirs of zoonotic microorganisms, including bacteria of the genus Pseudomonas, whose resistance mechanisms to antimicrobials in constant evolution make the therapeutic options available today increasingly ineffective, so monitoring the relationship between this bacterial genus and the Reptilia class is of great importance. This retrospective study aimed to calculate the frequency of isolation of Pseudomonas in reptiles kept as pets, presented for consultation at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (HEV) between April 2006 and February 2020; the identification of factors that may predispose to infection by Pseudomonas spp. in reptiles; and the characterization of the antibiotic resistance profile, using the disk diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer), of the isolates. To achieve this, we proceeded to the verification of the bacteriological analysis reports of the Microbiology and Immunology Laboratory (LMI) of FMV-ULisboa and proceeded to the research and collection of the clinical records of the reptiles through the Guruvet ® platform, having been able to access to the records of 24 animals, whose data were used for statistical analysis. An isolation frequency for Pseudomonas spp. of 35% was obtained. There was no statistically significant association between the isolation of this bacterial genus and the age, genus or species of the reptiles, nor with the type of disease presented by the animals. However, the multi-resistance profiles obtained are worrying, with 4 isolates classified as multidrug-resistant, 4 classified as extensively drug resistant and 1 classified as pandrugresistant. These results alert to the necessity of creating a policy of antibiotics’ administration in reptiles, with a hierarchy of agents, in order to guarantee a safe and universal prescription. The effectiveness of the treatment of a severe skin infection caused by Pseudomonas sp., not susceptible to all antibiotics used, through the application of a topical antiseptic may suggest that this approach is valid in other clinical cases and an appropriate option for empirical treatment pending the results of the antibiotic sensitivity test or the calculation of the minimum inhibitory concentration.N/

Phytochemical Composition of Extractives in the Inner Cork Layer of Cork Oaks with Low and Moderate Coraebus undatus Attack

    Get PDF
The beetle Coraebus undatus, during its larval stage feeds, and excavates galleries on the cork-generating layer of Quercus suber L. trees, seriously affecting the cork quality with significant economic losses for the cork industry. This work compared the composition of the extracts present in the innermost cork layers (the belly) of cork planks from Q. suber trees with low and moderate C. undatus attack in one stand. The total extractives in the inner cork layer from trees with moderate and low C. undatus attacks were similar (on average 22% of the cork mass) with a high proportion of polar compounds (91% of the total extractives). The chemical composition of the inner cork lipophilic extractives was the same in trees infested and free of larvae, with triterpenes as the most abundant family accounting for 77% of all the compounds, predominantly friedeline. The hydrophilic extractives differed on the levels of phenolic compounds, with higher levels in the inner cork extracts of samples from trees with low attack (90.0 mg GAE g1 vs. 59.0 mg GAE g1 of inner cork mass) The potential toxic activity of phenolic compounds may have a role in decreasing the larval feedinginfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Blood flow of bubbles moving in microchannels with bifurcations

    Get PDF
The gas embolism is a well-known phenomenon. Previous studies have been performed to understand the formation, the behavior and the influence of air bubbles in microcirculation. This study aims to investigate the flow of bubbles in a microchannel network with bifurcations. For that purpose, a microchannel network was fabricated by soft lithography. The working fluids used were composed by sheep red blood cells (RBCs) suspended in dextran 40 and two different hematocrits were studied, 5% and 10%. The in vitro blood flow was analyzed for a flow rate of lO ~-tllmin, by using an inverted microscope and a high-speed camera. It was possible to visualize the formation of the bubbles and their behavior along the network. The results show that the passage of air bubbles influences the cells local concentration, since a higher concentration of cells was seen upstream to the bubble and lower concentrations downstream to the bubble. This work was supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), Portugal, under the strategic grants UID/EMS/04077/2019, UID/EEA/04436/2019 and UID/EMS/00532/2019.
Abstract

Introduction

Paraneoplastic necrotizing myopathy is a rare disorder, described as a proximal, symmetrical, and rapidly progressing myopathy that is manifested as a paraneoplastic syndrome. Diagnosis is established via histological examination of the muscle biopsy.

Case presentation

We present the case of a 53-year-old woman, born in Guinea-Bissau, with a history of locally advanced breast cancer, diagnosed ten months previously. The patient had experienced a progressively proximal muscle weakness of the lower extremities, which led to a total inability to walk. Upon neurological examination, the patient showed muscle weakness and atrophy in both proximal lower extremities without myalgia. Muscle strength was graded according to the Medical Research Council Scale as 2 out of 5 in the bilateral iliopsoas muscle, and 4 out of 5 in the bilateral quadriceps femoris. The deep-tendon reflexes were hypoactive. The laboratory examination showed increased values of serum creatinine kinase and myoglobin. An electromyogram showed an incomplete interference pattern during voluntary contraction in the iliopsoas and quadriceps femoris. The motor nerve conduction was 44.1 m/s and 44.3 m/s in the right and left tibial nerves, respectively, and 46.5 m/s and 46.1 m/s in the right and left peroneal nerves, respectively. The sensory motor nerve conductions and the compound motor action potential amplitudes were normal. These findings, despite not being specific, suggested a myopathy. Consequently, a muscle biopsy was performed. A biopsy specimen showed myopathic changes that were characteristic of a necrotizing myopathy.

Conclusion

Treatment for this syndrome consists of controlling the tumor, and providing corticoid therapy. This led to the partial remission of the neurological manifestations.</p

Sound-Music Experiences and Maternal Sensitivity Following Preterm Birth: Contributions for the Model of Family-Centered Care.

    Get PDF
Introduction: The model of Family-Centered Care strengthens the parents’ active role at the caring for the newborn baby. Prenatal maternal sound-music sensitivity increases at the third trimester of pregnancy and shows to be a good predictor of prenatal maternal attachment. Method: preterm mothers (N = 36) were interviewed about clinical and sociodemographic features as well as about their sound-music experiences after and before preterm delivery. Correlations between sociodemographic, clinical and sound-music experiences were performed. Results: sound-music experiences after preterm birth were associated with memories of sound-music experiences during pregnancy and seem to be influenced by previous abortions as well as by babies’ variables (gestational age at birth, weight at birth and chronological age at observation). Conclusion: The assessment of maternal sound-music experiences following preterm birth may be useful in an innovative way to strength the model of Family-Centered Care underlining the mothers’ active role at the attention directed to the vulnerable baby

USO DE OLEATO DE MONOETANOLAMINA PARA ESCLEROSE QUÍMICA EM PACIENTE COM HEMANGIOMA INTRA-ORAL: RELATO DE CASO

    Get PDF
