Porém, a amostra permitiu-nos identificar três tipologias de trajetórias profissionais, nomeadamente, trajetórias profissionais instáveis ou flexíveis, trajetórias profissionais evolutivas e trajetórias profissionais estáveis e, quatro tipologias de aspirações profissionais, designadamente, aspiração a integração funcional, aspiração a progressão profissional, aspiração económica e aspiração a realização pessoal.ABSTRACT: This dissertation intends to analyze the professional trajectories of the young people living in the island of São Miguel, having as main axis the relationship between the (re) insertion in the labor market and the active employment policies, namely the T or L Internship as public policy , as well as the understanding of young people's aspirations towards possible future professionals. The empirical study is based on a qualitative methodology, namely, a comparative analysis of sixteen interviews with young people who were part of the labor market supported by the T or L program in two different periods 2004-2007 and between 2013-2016. The collected data allow to conclude that there are divergences in the professional trajectories of young people supported by the T or L internship program in the two periods under analysis. However, the sample allowed us to identify three typologies of professional trajectories, namely unstable or flexible professional trajectories, evolutionary professional trajectories and stable professional trajectories, and four types of professional aspirations, namely, aspiration to functional integration, aspiration to professional progression, aspiration economic and aspiration for personal fulfillment

Doutoramento em Biologia - Instituto Superior de AgronomiaOn the island of São Tomé, four endemic species of fruit pigeons are hunted as food and/or as an economic resource. This thesis intended to collect and analyze the baseline data required for the management of pigeons, which take into account their importance as a resource but also their overall conservation value. For this, I used a combination of biological and social sampling methods. The results show that harvest of endemic pigeons is performed predominantly for commercial purposes by a small and specialized group of hunters, but is also widely practiced opportunistically by most hunters and rural inhabitants. The hunting pressure on the two least abundant species already determines their patterns of distribution and abundance, and their extraction is probably unsustainable. Harvesting of the most hunted species is potentially sustainable, but more research is essential to the definition of measures to manage the species. Only one species is not commercially hunted and exploitation for subsistence is sustainable. The conservation of the species on the long term requires the development of specific measures; it is essential to promote legal restrictions on hunting and trading, to search for economic alternatives for bird hunting and define strategies of education / awareness of consumersFCT - PhD grant and the I&D project “Endemic pigeons of São Tomé: developing science-based conservation and sustainable use of African pigeons

Music criticism in Portugal in the 1920/30’s

UID/EAT/00693/2013 SFRH/BD/112598/2015Francine Benoît’s review of the opera Inês de Castro, published on January 19, 1927, wasn’t well received by the composer Ruy Coelho. In the next editions of the newspaper Diário de Lisboa, the readers followed an exchange of letters written by Benoît and Coelho in defense of their remarks and work. If at first the main point of disagreement was the idea that the prelude of the opera was “monotone”, without harmonic variations, as Benoît described it, the letters quickly crossed the line of a musical discussion and the composer accused the critic of not having enough qualifications to express a valid opinion. The public reaction of the composer against the judgement of the music critic arises questions on the use of the public sphere, on the authority of the critic and of the composer, and on the functions of the music criticism. It also allows us to observe the relations between artists and critics. In this paper I will look at some reactions (sometimes polemics) maintained between composers like Ruy Coelho (who was a music critic too) and critics like Francine Benoît and Fernando Lopes-Graça (who were also composers). In the end, these situations may contribute to better understand the general panorama of the practice of music criticism in Portugal in the 1920/30's.authorsversionpublishe

New strategies to fight bacterial adhesion

    Get PDF
Initial adhesion of bacteria to biomaterials' surface is assumed to be an important stage in their colonization which may to lead to severe infections and loss of medical devices. Thus, the knowledge of how these microorganisms adhere and which factors affect this phenomenon proves to be of great importance in order to avoid their colonization. Hydrophobicity, charge, roughness and chemical composition of surfaces can rule the adhesion process. A better understanding of all these features is crucial for an effective microorganism’s adhesion control. In this context, it is possible to modify the biomaterials’ surfaces through coatings doped with an antimicrobial agent, in order to prevent biofilm formation. So, this mini-review gives a brief account of aspects involved in bacterial attachment to a surface, highlighting the interactions involved and presenting mechanisms that are being used to fight pathogens adhesion. For this intent, hydrophobicity, morphology and topography of doped silver coatings will be exploited as a new approach for the development of antibacterial surfaces

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of teamwork engagement, as an affective and motivational contextual factor, on two dimensions of team effectiveness (team learning and team adaptation). We hypothesized that the relationship between team learning and team adaptation is moderated by teamwork engagement and the team adaptation is a mediator of the relationship between team learning and team effectiveness. A total of 23 teams (99 individuals) participated in this study. All teams were part of different hostels at Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Globally, the results supported the hypotheses concerning the direct influence of learning processes on team adaptation, as the team adaptive performance on effectiveness. The results did not support the hypothesis of the moderation role of teamwork engagement on the relationship between team learning and team adaptation. However, the hypothesis related to the mediation effect of team adaptation on the relationship between team learning and team effectiveness was confirmed. Therefore, these results reflect the importance of teamwork, in particularly the adaptation mechanisms and learning processes on team effectiveness, but not of the affective emergent states

    Board independence and innovation

    Get PDF
Legislation introduced in the U.S. in 2002/2003 significantly changed board composition of public firms by imposing a 50% independent directors’ ratio. Research on the effect of independent directors is not consensual, implying that this exogenous shock is a unique opportunity to study their importance. This study answers the question of whether or not independent directors can effectively mitigate agency conflicts between shareholders and the management, having a positive impact on the choice of successful R&D projects. We find that an increase of board independence has a positive impact on patent counts. Hence, the results support that independent directors truly spur innovation and risk taking.UNL - NSB

Cushing syndrome due to black adrenal adenoma : difficulties in the differential diagnosis of a patient with an adrenal adenoma

Signs and symptoms of endocrine dysfunction related to adrenal nodules usually are linked to their specific hormonal hypersecretion. Still, these diagnoses are not always a straightforward process and there have been cases in which the clinical expression has been discordant with the tumour histologic features. A 59-year-old woman was observed at the endocrinology outpatient department due to uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. Furthermore, the patient referred paroxysmal high blood pressure and weight loss. Her medical history was remarkable by uncontrolled hypertension, chronic hepatitis C, past pelvic actinomycosis and an adrenal nodule diagnosed due to an unrelated purpose. Endocrine evaluation showed serum morning cortisol, urinary cortisol and metanephrines within the reference range, but supressed adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), loss of cortisol circadian rhythm and a non-suppression in the dexamethasone test, suggesting the diagnosis of Cushing’s syndrome. The imaging procedures were inconclusive. The CT scan revealed a lesion of 20 mm in the left adrenal with a spontaneous density of 33 HU, well-defined contours, a relative wash-out of 61%, and 120HU on portal venous phase. The MRI showed a hyperintense nodule in T1-weighted images, without a signal dropout in out-of-phase T1 imaging. There was no evidence of tumour invasion of adjacent tissues, ganglion or distant metastasis. MIBG scintigraphy did not show abnormal findings. The patient underwent unilateral left adrenalectomy. Histopathologic examination showed an adenoma with foci of oncocytic cells and neuromelanin pigments. The surgical procedure resulted in Cushing’s syndrome remission, and an improvement in blood pressure and glucose control. This medical report illustrates the difficulties in the differential diagnosis of an adrenal adenoma. The patient presented some clinical features suggestive of pheochromocytoma, while the typical clinical findings of a Cushing syndrome were absent. Nevertheless, she presented a history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic hepatitis C and actinomycosis, for which the Cushing Syndrome might have contributed. Additionally, the atypical imaging findings made the differential diagnosis more complicated, when it was in fact a black adrenal adenoma with peculiar histologic characteristics
