Blocking DDoS attacks at the network level
Denial of service (DDoS) is a persistent and continuously growing problem. These
attacks are based on methods that flood the victim with messages that it did not request,
effectively exhausting its computational or bandwidth resources. The variety of attack
approaches is overwhelming and the current defense mechanisms are not completely
effective. In today’s internet, a multitude of DDoS attacks occur everyday, some even
degrading the availability of critical or governmental services.
In this dissertation, we propose a new network level DDoS mitigation protocol that
iterates on previous attempts and uses proven mechanisms such as cryptographic challenges
and packet-tagging.
Our analysis of the previous attempts to solve this problem led to a ground-up design
of the protocol with adaptability in mind, trying to minimize deployment and adoption
barriers.
With this work we concluded that with software changes only on the communication
endpoints, it is possible to mitigate the most used DDoS attacks with results up to 25
times more favourable than standard resource rate limiting (RRL) methods
Luz Saúde buyout: Equity valuation
Luz Saúde is on the main players on Portuguese private healthcare business, owning 9% of the market share.
It became the first Portuguese healthcare listed company in 2014 with an initial price of €3.20 per share; in the same year, the insurance company Fidelidade, bought 96% of the company and became the majority shareholder at that time.
Currently, the capital is mainly divided by Fosun (49%) and Fidelidade (49.7%). In 2018 it was decided by both to buyout the rest of the dispersed shares, offering €5.71 per share.
Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to value the equity side of Luz Saúde and reach a fair price per share and to conclude over the reasonableness of the price offered by Fosun and Fidelidade to the minority investors.
As the purpose of the thesis is to value only the equity side, the valuation methodology followed the free cash-flow to the equity approach and relative valuation based on comparable companies. Dividend discount model was not used since Luz Saúde never paid any dividend and it is not expectable that it will do so.Luz Saúde é uma das principais empresas a atuar em Portugal no setor da saúde privada, com uma quota de mercado estimada na ordem dos 9%.
Forecasting banking crises in developing countries: a dynamic probit approach
Banking crises have afflicted economies in developing countries at least as much as they have in developed ones. In this paper, we discuss possible indicators that allow an effective forecast of banking crises based on an historical analysis of past crises, and develop several probit models, using yearly data from 1960 to 2014 for 33 developing countries across Latin America, Africa and Asia-Pacific. We find that a dynamic probit model which incorporates exuberance dummy variables gives the best forecasting results. Data on exports, inflation, broad money and birth rate provide the best indicators across the different models tested
Veterinary telemedicine in Portugal : potential clients perspective
In Portugal, veterinary telemedicine is only recently considered an acceptable practice and
although there is some research on the opinion of Portuguese veterinary surgeons, the opinion
of the potential clients is mostly unknown. This research aims to better understand if there is an
interest in a veterinary telemedicine service in Portugal. An online survey was used to better
understand the opinion of potential clients. Most of the participants agreed that they would be
more interested in the service with their regular veterinarian versus a new veterinarian. It was
also observed that the main benefits of telemedicine in the eye of the participants are less stress
to the animal, advice if hospitalization is necessary and allowing access to veterinary care for
hard-to-reach groups and that main drawbacks are risk of missed diagnoses, lack of physical
exams and the need for hospitalization anyway. A narrow majority agreed that they would only
use a veterinary telemedicine service for follow-up consults. The participants mostly agreed
that they would be interested in using wearable devices and smartphone applications for
veterinary care. Half price was how much most of the participants were willing to pay for a
veterinary telemedicine consult compared with a regular hospital visit. If covered by a pet
insurance, the participants, would be more inclined to use the service. When asked if they have
more confidence in Human telemedicine compared with veterinary telemedicine, most of the
participants disagreed. Overall, the results showed that there is an interest in veterinary
telemedicine in Portugal.

costeiras, amerÃndios, colonos neoeuropeus e formigas cortadeiras, durante a colonização portuguesa.
Functional analysis of MiRNAs involved in the development of legume seeds
To feed an ever-increasing population worldwide, new strategies for improving agriculture
must be found. In the continents of South America, Asia and Africa, there is a prevalent usage of
legumes, such as the common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and soy (Glycine max). To boost the
yield of these crops, we need to better understand the development of seeds and in this study the
focus is on the effect of the expression of micro RNAs (miRNAs), specifically miR408, during the
development of the seeds in the model legume Medicago truncatula (M. truncatula), as well as
creating new transformed plants.
In P. vulgaris several miRNAs have already been identified to influence the development
of the seed, such as miR399a and miR166a and in M. truncatula, there are reports of miR408
influencing the number of seeds per pod. As a starting point, a bioinformatic analysis was
conducted to search for miR399a and miR166a equivalents in M. truncatula and their predicted
targets as well as the predicted targets of M. truncatula miR408. For all the three miRNAs, the
predictions aligned with the bibliography. Using a transformed plant (Mtr-MIM408) that had a
mimic of miR408 (MIM408), a transcript complementary to the miRNA that downregulates it, the
expression level of miR408 were measured. Because the control samples showed expression of
MIM408, no comparison between expression of miR408 and its target between plants could be
made. Regarding the transformation of plants, the fragments containing the mimic for miR166a
and miR399a were successfully synthetized but failed to be inserted in a binary vector used for
transformation M. truncatula. Finally, the transformed plants showed delayed blooming and had
fewer seeds per pod, similar to what is found in literature.
In short, this work will be a steppingstone in the process of understanding the impact of
the expression of these miRNAs in seed development.
(Glycine max) e o feijão (Phaseolus vulgaris).
criar novas plantas transformantes.
Finalmente, as plantas transformadas (Mtr-MIM408) mostraram floração tardia e
Predisposition for knee osteoarthritis in portuguese adults with obesity
participam no processo patogénico.
2
) responderam à versão on-line do
Knee Osteoarthritis Pre-Screening Questionnaire (KOPS). A estatÃstica descritiva e o
eram homens (idade 46,1±13,9; IMC 29,6±4,7kg/m
2
) e 63,5% eram mulheres (idade
46,1±13,8; IMC 29,3±6,5kg/m
2
), enquanto 50,25% tinham obesidade (idade 47,8±13;
IMC 34,6±3,9kg/m
2
literatura. Background: The relationship of Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) and Obesity is explained
by mechanical overloading on the cartilage and also by some systemic factors that
participate in the pathogenic process. Since six in each ten individuals are overweight
or obese in Portugal, this study’s goal is to estimate KOA’s prevalence in the
Portuguese population with obesity. Methods: 655 volunteers (age 46,1±13,8; BMI
29,4±5,9kg/m2
) answered to a Knee Osteoarthritis Pre-Screening Questionnaire
(KOPS) Online version. Descriptive statistics and Pearson Correlation Coefficient were
used for analyses and the coefficient of determination was used to interpret r and was
obtained by squaring the correlation coefficient r (r2
). Independent t-test and Analysis of
Variance (ANOVA) were used to compare continuous variables between groups.
Results: From total sample, 36,5% were male (age 46,1±13,9; BMI 29,6±4,7 kg/m2
)
and 63,5% were female (age 46,1±13,8; BMI 29,3±6,5kg/m2
) while 50,25% had obesity
(age 47,8±13; BMI 34,6±3,9kg/m2
). In the Obese Group, KOA’s prevalence was 56,6%
(KOPS Total Score 18,3±9,3) while in the Non-Obese was 23,6% (KOPS Total Score
12±7,1). Conclusion: KOA’s prevalence in the population with obesity is significantly
higher than the prevalence in general population reported by literature
