    A Shplit Ticket, Half Irish, Half Chinay : Representations of Mixed-Race and Hybridity in the Turn-of-the-Century Theater

    Charles Townsend\u27s 1889 adaptation of Harriet Beecher Stowe\u27s Uncle Tom\u27s Cabin features white actors playing light- and dark-skinned African-American characters, changing degrees of make-up as the script, stage business, or number of available players demands. Thomas Denison\u27s stage directions to his 1895 play, Patsy O\u27Wang, an Irish Farce with a Chinese Mix-Up, stipulates that the alternation of the half -Chinese, half-Irish cook between his two ethnic personas is key to this capital farce, and that a comedie use of the Chinese dialect is central to this. The Geezer (c. 1896), Joseph Herbert\u27s spoof of the popular musical, The Geisha, features white actors playing Chinese dignitaries, but also donning German and Irish accents. The white actors in these plays enact different paradigms of hybridity. The actors in Townsend\u27s Uncle Tom\u27s Cabin, a Melodrama in Five Acts embody conceptions of both mixed and unmixed African Americans, freely alternating between each. In Patsy O\u27Wang, the main character\u27s background is central to the story, and the lead actor moves between the two ethnicities by his accent, mannerisms, and politics. Racial mixing is central to the plot of The Geezer through Anglo actors who make themselves hybrid by appearing Chinese and appropriating a third accent, rather than the creation of racially mixed offspring

    Curvature Corrections to Dynamics of Domain Walls

    The most usual procedure for deriving curvature corrections to effective actions for topological defects is subjected to a critical reappraisal. A logically unjustified step (leading to overdetermination) is identified and rectified, taking the standard domain wall case as an illustrative example. Using the appropriately corrected procedure, we obtain a new exact (analytic) expression for the corresponding effective action contribution of quadratic order in the wall width, in terms of the intrinsic Ricci scalar RR and the extrinsic curvature scalar KK. The result is proportional to cK2−RcK^2-R with the coefficient given by c≃2c\simeq 2. The resulting form of the ensuing dynamical equations is obtained in terms of the second fundamental form and the Dalembertian of its trace, K. It is argued that this does not invalidate the physical conclusions obtained from the "zero rigidity" ansatz c=0c=0 used in previous work.Comment: 19 pages plain TeX, 2 figures include

    Seagrasses in the Mississippi and Chandeleur Sounds and Problems Associated with Decadal-Scale Change Detection

    Seagrass mapping data from a multitude of previous projects in the Mississippi and Chandeleur sounds were gathered and combined to provide information on seagrass change from 1940 to 2011. Seagrasses generally occur in three groups: (1) along the Mississippi mainland coastline dominated by Ruppia maritima, (2) on the north side of Mississippi Sound barrier islands dominated by Halodule wrightii, and (3) on the west side of the Chandeleur Islands dominated by Thalassia testudinum co-occurring with other seagrass species. The study area generally lost seagrasses over the 71-yr period, ostensibly due to loss or reduction of protective island barriers and reductions in water quality. An example of how the time series of maps generated in this project can be utilized to further investigate seagrass change was demonstrated with data from Horn Island, including problems associated with calculating change in seagrass area using data from previous investigations. Comparisons of seagrass area among various studies that used different mapping methods (seagrass extent vs. seagrass coverage vs. vegetated seagrass area) can result in overestimation of area change and misleading conclusions

    Geometry of Deformations of Relativistic Membranes

    A kinematical description of infinitesimal deformations of the worldsheet spanned in spacetime by a relativistic membrane is presented. This provides a framework for obtaining both the classical equations of motion and the equations describing infinitesimal deformations about solutions of these equations when the action describing the dynamics of this membrane is constructed using {\it any} local geometrical worldsheet scalars.     Psychedelics for brain injury: A mini-review

    Objective: Stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI) are among the leading causes of disability. Even after engaging in rehabilitation, nearly half of patients with severe TBI requiring hospitalization are left with major disability. Despite decades of investigation, pharmacologic treatment of brain injury is still a field in its infancy. Recent clinical trials have begun into the use of psychedelic therapeutics for treatment of brain injury. This brief review aims to summarize the current state of the science's relevance to neurorehabilitation, and may act as a resource for those seeking to understand the precedence for these ongoing clinical trials.Methods: Narrative mini-review of studies published related to psychedelic therapeutics and brain injury.Results: Recent in vitro, in vivo, and case report studies suggest psychedelic pharmacotherapies may influence the future of brain injury treatment through modulation of neuroinflammation, hippocampal neurogenesis, neuroplasticity, and brain complexity.Conclusions: Historical data on the safety of some of these substances could serve in effect as phase 0 and phase I studies. Further phase II trials will illuminate how these drugs may treat brain injury, particularly TBI and reperfusion injury from stroke

    Effective action and motion of a cosmic string

    We examine the leading order corrections to the Nambu effective action for the motion of a cosmic string, which appear at fourth order in the ratio of the width to radius of curvature of the string. We determine the numerical coefficients of these extrinsic curvature corrections, and derive the equations of motion of the worldsheet. Using these equations, we calculate the corrections to the motion of a collapsing loop, a travelling wave, and a helical breather. From the numerical coefficients we have calculated, we discuss whether the string motion can be labelled as `rigid' or `antirigid,' and hence whether cusp or kink formation might be suppressed or enhanced.Comment: 24 pages revtex, 12 figure

    Psychoactive substances and the political ecology of mental distress

    The goal of this paper is to both understand and depathologize clinically significant mental distress related to criminalized contact with psychoactive biotic substances by employing a framework known as critical political ecology of health and disease from the subdiscipline of medical geography. The political ecology of disease framework joins disease ecology with the power-calculus of political economy and calls for situating health-related phenomena in their broad social and economic context, demonstrating how large-scale global processes are at work at the local level, and giving due attention to historical analysis in understanding the relevant human-environment relations. Critical approaches to the political ecology of health and disease have the potential to incorporate ever-broadening social, political, economic, and cultural factors to challenge traditional causes, definitions, and sociomedical understandings of disease. Inspired by the patient-centered medical diagnosis critiques in medical geography, this paper will use a critical political ecology of disease approach to challenge certain prevailing sociomedical interpretations of disease, or more specifically, mental disorder, found in the field of substance abuse diagnostics and the related American punitive public policy regimes of substance abuse prevention and control, with regards to the use of biotic substances. It will do this by first critically interrogating the concept of "substances" and grounding them in an ecological context, reviewing the history of both the development of modern substance control laws and modern substance abuse diagnostics, and understanding the biogeographic dimensions of such approaches. It closes with proposing a non-criminalizing public health approach for regulating human close contact with psychoactive substances using the example of cannabis use

    Kinematics, Abundances, and Origin of Brightest Cluster Galaxies

    We present kinematic parameters and absorption line strengths for three brightest cluster galaxies, NGC 6166, NGC 6173 and NGC 6086. We find that NGC 6166 has a velocity dispersion profile which rises beyond 20 arcsec from the nucleus, with a halo velocity dispersion in excess of 400 km/s. All three galaxies show a positive and constant h4 Hermite moment. The rising velocity dispersion profile in NGC 6166 thus indicates an increasing mass-to-light ratio. Rotation is low in all three galaxies, and NGC 6173 and NGC 6086 show possible kinematically decoupled cores. All three galaxies have Mg2 gradients similar to those found in normal bright ellipticals, which are not steep enough to support simple dissipative collapse models, but these could be accompanied by dissipationless mergers which would tend to dilute the abundance gradients. The [Mg/Fe] ratios in NGC 6166 and NGC 6086 are higher than that in NGC 6173, and if NGC 6173 is typical of normal bright ellipticals, this suggests that cDs cannot form from late mergers of normal galaxies.Comment: 21 pages, accepted for publication in MNRA

    A rotating black ring in five dimensions

    The vacuum Einstein equations in five dimensions are shown to admit a solution describing an asymptotically flat spacetime regular on and outside an event horizon of topology S^1 x S^2. It describes a rotating ``black ring''. This is the first example of an asymptotically flat vacuum solution with an event horizon of non-spherical topology. There is a range of values for the mass and angular momentum for which there exist two black ring solutions as well as a black hole solution. Therefore the uniqueness theorems valid in four dimensions do not have simple higher dimensional generalizations. It is suggested that increasing the spin of a five dimensional black hole beyond a critical value results in a transition to a black ring, which can have an arbitrarily large angular momentum for a given mass.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; v2: minor improvement
