    The Role That Autism Parent-Led Support Groups Play In Facilitating Advocacy

    In this study, autism parent-led support groups and the contribution these groups had in creating parental advocacy were studied. The primary purpose of the study was to determine if autism parent-led support groups promoted advocacy skills of parents of children with autism. The secondary purpose of the study was to evaluate the level and extent of support provided by parent-led support groups. The qualitative data collection was done through individual interviews of parents of children with autism whose children were of any age. Through data analysis 6 major themes were identified: advocacy, emotional support, difficulty with funding, informational support, instrumental support, and appraisal support. Parents indicated that parent-led support groups assisted them in acquiring advocacy skills and provided good emotional support, informational support, and appraisal support. This research was important because parents of children with autism have greater problems with treatments than parents of children with other chronic developmental disorders, and many parents felt they needed to obtain advocacy skills in order to find the best interventions for their child. The social change implication of this study is that people can better understand the impact that parent-led support groups can have in facilitating advocacy among parents who participate in the groups. This study also brings to light the support these groups provide, and how this support impacts their lives

    Genome-wide analysis of 30 -untranslated regions supports the existence of post-transcriptional regulons controlling gene expression in trypanosomes

    In eukaryotic cells, a group of messenger ribonucleic acids (mRNAs) encoding functionally interrelated proteins together with the trans-acting factors that coordinately modulate their expression is termed a post-transcriptional regulon, due to their partial analogy to a prokaryotic polycistron. This mRNA clustering is organized by sequence-specific RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) that bind cis-regulatory elements in the noncoding regions of genes, and mediates the synchronized control of their fate. These recognition motifs are often characterized by conserved sequences and/or RNA structures, and it is likely that various classes of cis-elements remain undiscovered. Current evidence suggests that RNA regulons govern gene expression in trypanosomes, unicellular parasites which mainly use post-transcriptional mechanisms to control protein synthesis. In this study, we used motif discovery tools to test whether groups of functionally related trypanosomatid genes contain a common cis-regulatory element. We obtained conserved structured RNA motifs statistically enriched in the noncoding region of 38 out of 53 groups of metabolically related transcripts in comparison with a random control. These motifs have a hairpin loop structure, a preferred sense orientation and are located in close proximity to the open reading frames. We found that 15 out of these 38 groups represent unique motifs in which most 30 -UTR signature elements were group-specific. Two extensively studied Trypanosoma cruzi RBPs, TcUBP1 and TcRBP3 were found associated with a few candidate RNA regulons. Interestingly, 13 motifs showed a strong correlation with clusters of developmentally co-expressed genes and six RNA elements were enriched in gene clusters affected after hyperosmotic stress. Here we report a systematic genome-wide in silico screen to search for novel RNA-binding sites in transcripts, and describe an organized network of several coordinately regulated cohorts of mRNAs in T. cruzi. Moreover, we found that structured RNA elements are also conserved in other human pathogens. These results support a model of regulation of gene expression by multiple post-transcriptional regulons in trypanosomes.Fil: de Gaudenzi, Javier Gerardo.     This article analyzes the historical evolution of Atacama regarding muleteering and agrarian development over four centuries based on both published and unpublished sources. It presents the changes and continuities throughout various administrations, their effects on the regional process, the ideology of power and its policies, Indigenous agency, material conditioning factors, and structural contradictions. The study allows to understand the articulation between forms of domination and Indigenous societies in the conformation of the agro-mining landscapes of a border space, conceived as hostile and with a persistent extractive orientation.En este artículo analizamos el desarrollo agrícola, ganadero y arriero en Atacama a partir de fuentes editadas e inéditas. Desde una perspectiva de  larga duración, exponemos los cambios y las continuidades a lo largo de las diversas  administraciones, sus efectos en el proceso regional, la ideología del poder y sus políticas, la agencia indígena, los condicionantes materiales y las contradicciones estructurales.     Diverging facets of grassland ant diversity along a Mediterranean elevational gradient

    1. We address associations of taxonomic diversity (TD), functional diversity (FD), and phylogenetic diversity (PD) of ant assemblages with gradients of elevation to assess whether energetic limitations or deterministic or stochastic niche-building processes are more relevant to the assembly of communities. 2. We sampled ant assemblages using pitfall traps in grassland habitats along an elevational gradient of 1712 m in the Guadarrama Mountains of Central Spain. The relationships of alpha and beta diversity metrics with soil temperature, productivity, elevation, and geographical distances were examined with generalised additive (mixed) models. 3. The facets of diversity showed strong and partially coincident responses to the gradients, but the responses and the similarities among them weakened or disappeared when the effects of species richness were factored out. TD and FD changed roughly in a similar manner with elevation and productivity, but PD did not show clear responses to those factors. Taxonomic and functional richness increased with productivity and decreased with elevation. Mean pairwise functional and phylogenetic dissimilarities did not change along the gradients. Elevation and productivity gradients accounted for much of the beta TD among assemblages but only explained a moderate variation of functional traits and phylogenetic relationships, while geographical distances were more explanatory of beta PD. 4. The partial redundancies among facets of diversity suggest that the spatial variation of diversity is mainly related to the sheer number of species.     Colchicine blocks tubulin heterodimer recycling by tubulin cofactors TBCA, TBCB and TBCE

    Research Areas: Cell Biology ; Developmental BiologyColchicine has been used to treat gout and, more recently, to effectively prevent autoinflammatory diseases and both primary and recurrent episodes of pericarditis. The anti-inflammatory action of colchicine seems to result from irreversible inhibition of tubulin polymerization and microtubule (MT) assembly by binding to the tubulin heterodimer, avoiding the signal transduction required to the activation of the entire NLRP3 inflammasome. Emerging results show that the MT network is a potential regulator of cardiac mechanics. Here, we investigated how colchicine impacts in tubulin folding cofactors TBCA, TBCB, and TBCE activities. We show that TBCA is abundant in mouse heart insoluble protein extracts. Also, a decrease of the TBCA/β-tubulin complex followed by an increase of free TBCA is observed in human cells treated with colchicine. The presence of free TBCA is not observed in cells treated with other antimitotic agents such as nocodazole or cold shock, neither after translation inhibition by cycloheximide. In vitro assays show that colchicine inhibits tubulin heterodimer dissociation by TBCE/TBCB, probably by interfering with interactions of TBCE with tubulin dimers, leading to free TBCA. Manipulation of TBCA levels, either by RNAi or overexpression results in decreased levels of tubulin heterodimers. Together, these data strongly suggest that TBCA is mainly receiving β-tubulin from the dissociation of preexisting heterodimers instead of newly synthesized tubulins. The TBCE/TBCB+TBCA system is crucial for controlling the critical concentration of free tubulin heterodimers and MT dynamics in the cells by recycling the tubulin heterodimers. It is conceivable that colchicine affects tubulin heterodimer recycling through the TBCE/TBCB+TBCA system producing the known benefits in the treatment of pericardium inflammation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    El siguiente trabajo de investigación tuvo como objetivo fundamental proponer y presentar una solución al problema que presentó la empresa “LGR Networks S.A.C”, el cual fue una deficiente gestión de materiales, así como también un deficiente seguimiento y control en los recursos utilizados en los proyectos que la empresa realiza. Esto generaba que se realicen compras por sobreprecios, pérdida de tiempo al realizar la búsqueda de materiales en stock y pérdida de proyectos al desconocer las personas y cantidades de materiales asignados a los diferentes proyectos que se requieren. Con el fin de realizar la presente tesis se contó con la empresa “LGR Networks S.A.C” quien fue objeto de estudio. LGR Networks brinda servicios de instalación de todo tipo de cableado tales como cables de pares, cables coaxiales, fibra óptica, etc. al igual que la venta de productos de telecomunicación. El sistema que se planteó como solución permitió tener una correcta gestión de materiales, así como administración de los técnicos y clientes de la empresa. Nos permitió recolectar información de campo, hacer un seguimiento del personal de campo, tener la información centralizada de los usuarios y organizar la programación de visitas de los técnicos a los clientes. Asimismo, este sistema permitió hacer el seguimiento de diversos indicadores, obtenidos por medio de la información recopilada del aprovisionamiento del almacén y de las actividades realizadas por los técnicos, para que se pueda realizar la toma de decisiones cuando sea requerido.     [Abstract] Objective: To investigate, in Spanish patients with rheumatic diseases treated with subcutaneous biological drugs, their sources of information, which sources they consider most relevant, and their satisfaction with the information received in the hospital. Methods: Rheumatologists from 50 hospitals handed out an anonymous survey to 20 consecutive patients with rheumatoid arthritis, axial spondyloarthritis or psoriatic arthritis treated with subcutaneous biologicals. The survey was developed ad hoc by 4 rheumatologists and 3 patients, and included questions with closed-ended responses on sources of information and satisfaction. Results: The survey was handed-out to 1,000 patients, 592 of whom completed it (response rate: 59.2%). The rheumatologist was mentioned as the most important source of information (75%), followed by the primary care physician, nurses, and electronic resources; 45.2% received oral and written information about the biological, 46.1% oral only, and 6.0% written only; 8.7% stated that they had not been taught to inject the biological. The percentage of patients satisfied with the information received was high (87.2%), although the satisfaction was lower in relation to safety. If the information came from the rheumatologist, the satisfaction was higher (89.6%) than when coming from other sources (59.6%; P<.001). Satisfaction was also higher if the information was provided orally and written (92.8%) than if provided only orally (86.1%; P=.013); 45.2% reported having sought information from sources outside the hospital. Conclusions: The rheumatologist is key in transmitting satisfactory information on biological treatment to patients. He or she must also act as a guide, since a high percentage of patients seeks information in other different sources.[Resumen] Objetivo. Conocer las fuentes de las que los pacientes españoles con enfermedades reumáticas tratados con fármacos biológicos subcutáneos obtienen información, cuáles consideran más relevantes y su satisfacción con la información recibida en el hospital. Métodos. Reumatólogos de 50 hospitales entregaron una encuesta anónima, desarrollada ad hoc por 4 reumatólogos y 3 pacientes, a 20 pacientes consecutivos con artritis reumatoide, espondiloartritis axial o artritis psoriásica tratados con biológicos subcutáneos. La encuesta incluyó preguntas con respuestas cerradas sobre los aspectos mencionados previamente. Resultados. Recibieron la encuesta 1.000 pacientes, 592 la devolvieron cumplimentada (tasa de respuesta: 59,2%). El reumatólogo fue mencionado como la fuente de información más importante (75%), seguido del médico de atención primaria, la enfermería y los recursos electrónicos. El 45,2% recibió información oral y por escrito sobre el biológico, el 46,1% solo oral, el 6% solo por escrito. Un 8,7% declaró no haber sido enseñado a inyectarse el biológico. El porcentaje de pacientes satisfechos con la información recibida fue elevado (87,2%), aunque la satisfacción fue menor en temas relacionados con la seguridad. Si la información provenía del reumatólogo, la satisfacción era mayor (89,6%) que cuando provenía de otras vías (59,6%; p < 0,001). La satisfacción también era mayor si se dio oral y por escrito (92,8%) frente a solo oral (86,1%; p = 0,013). Un 45,2% declaró haber buscado información en fuentes fuera del hospital. Conclusiones. El reumatólogo es clave a la hora de transmitir información satisfactoria al paciente en tratamiento biológico.     Fouling study of nanofiltration membranes for sugar control in grape must: Analysis of resistances and the role of osmotic pressure

    Producción CientíficaThree membranes are analyzed attending to their retention, flux and fouling when used to nanofiltrate sugars in red grape musts. With high molecular weight compounds, fouling develops from initial pore blocking to final cake deposition. A decrease of resistance appears due to a decrease of the effective transmembrane pressure and cake compaction. The final effective pore size corresponds to that of the compacted cake. Attending to flux decay and sugar retention, two membranes, HL and SR3, are appropriate to reduce the content of sugar of red must.
