142Nd/144Nd Inferences on the nature and origin of the source of high 3He/4He magmas
High-precision measurements of 142Nd/144Nd in picrites from the Baffin Bay region that contain the highest 3He/4He ratios yet measured in terrestrial mantle-derived rocks are indistinguishable from the value measured in the terrestrial standard and other modern mantle-derived rocks. The Baffin Island lavas are distinguished from other hotspot lavas by their unusually high 3He/4He and 182W/184W ratios, but their Sr, 142Nd, 143Nd, Hf, and Pb isotopic signatures overlap the values measured in North Atlantic MORB. These features imply either that the mantle source region of high 3He/4He magmas carries the lithophile isotopic signatures of incompatible element depletion, or that the He isotope signature of this source is decoupled from the lithophile isotope tracers in the magmas. The coupled 142Nd–143Nd data are consistent with the magma source acquiring the incompatible element depletion during, or shortly after, Earth formation if the bulk-Earth has a 142Nd/144Nd ratio more similar to the average measured for enstatite chondrites than modern terrestrial rocks. If Earth's initial 142Nd/144Nd was higher than the average of enstatite chondrites, the data are consistent with the traditional interpretation that the depleted-mantle reservoir was formed through the extraction of an incompatible-element-rich reservoir, such as continental crust, after the circa 4 Ga extinction of 146Sm. This explanation, however, fails to account for the high 3He/4He. The Nd isotopic composition of the picrites could reflect a dominant contribution from the incompatible element depleted source of North Atlantic MORB, overprinted by a small (10–20%) contribution from a mantle source with He concentrations at least ten times higher than the depleted mantle along with W isotopic compositions substantially higher than typical of mantle-derived rocks

Mirror fusion reactor study
The principal features of a fusion power reactor employing the magnetic mirror confinement concept are described. A parametric design and cost estimate analysis has been used to optimize the design for minimum capital cost per net electric output. Optimized parameters include the vacuum mirror ratio, the injection energy and angle, the choice of a thermal conversion cycle, and the design efficiency of the charged particle direct converter. The sensitivity of the cost of power for the optimized design to variations in many of the reactor parameters is discussed. (auth

Finite reduction and Morse index estimates for mechanical systems
A simple version of exact finite dimensional reduction for the variational
setting of mechanical systems is presented. It is worked out by means of a
thorough global version of the implicit function theorem for monotone
operators. Moreover, the Hessian of the reduced function preserves all the
relevant information of the original one, by Schur's complement, which
spontaneously appears in this context. Finally, the results are
straightforwardly extended to the case of a Dirichlet problem on a bounded
domain.Comment: 13 pages; v2: minor changes, to appear in Nonlinear Differential

Learning from the Success of MPI
The Message Passing Interface (MPI) has been extremely successful as a
portable way to program high-performance parallel computers. This success has
occurred in spite of the view of many that message passing is difficult and
that other approaches, including automatic parallelization and directive-based
parallelism, are easier to use. This paper argues that MPI has succeeded
because it addresses all of the important issues in providing a parallel
programming model.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur

Evaluation of impact tests of solid steel billet onto concrete pads, and application to generic ISFSI storage cask for tipover and side drop
Twelve tests were performed at LLNL to assess loading conditions on a spent fuel casts for side drops, end drops and tipover events. The tests were performed with a 1/3-scale model concrete pad to benchmark the structural analysis code DYNA3D. The side drop and tipover test results are discussed in this report. The billet and test pad were modified with DYNA3D using material properties and techniques used in earlier tests. The peak or maximum deceleration test results were compared to the simulated analytical results. It was concluded that an analytical model based on DYNA3D code and has been adequately benchmarked for this type of application. A generic or represented cask was modified with the DYNA3D code and evaluated for ISFSI side drop and tipover events. The analytical method can be applied to similar casks to estimate impact loads on storage casks resulting from low-velocity side or tip impacts onto concrete storage pads
Extreme 54Cr-rich nano-oxides in the CI chondrite Orgueil -Implication for a late supernova injection into the Solar System
Systematic variations in 54Cr/52Cr ratios between meteorite classes (Qin et
al., 2010a; Trinquier et al., 2007) point to large scale spatial and/or
temporal isotopic heterogeneity in the solar protoplanetary disk. Two
explanations for these variations have been proposed, with important
implications for the formation of the Solar System: heterogeneous seeding of
the disk with dust from a supernova, or energetic-particle irradiation of dust
in the disk. The key to differentiating between them is identification of the
carrier(s) of the 54Cr anomalies. Here we report the results of our recent
NanoSIMS imaging search for the 54Cr-rich carrier in the acid-resistant residue
of the CI chondrite Orgueil. A total of 10 regions with extreme 54Cr-excesses
({\delta}54Cr values up to 1500 %) were found. Comparison between SEM, Auger
and NanoSIMS analyses showed that these 54Cr-rich regions are associated with
one or more sub-micron (typically less than 200 nm) Cr oxide grains, most
likely spinels. Because the size of the NanoSIMS primary O- ion beam is larger
than the typical grain size on the sample mount, the measured anomalies are
lower limits, and we estimate that the actual 54Cr enrichments in three grains
are at least 11 times Solar and in one of these may be as high as 50 times
Solar. Such compositions strongly favor a Type II supernova origin. The
variability in bulk 54Cr/52Cr between meteorite classes argues for a
heterogeneous distribution of the 54Cr carrier in the solar protoplanetary disk
following a late supernova injection event. Such a scenario is also supported
by the O-isotopic distribution and variable abundances in different planetary
materials of other presolar oxide and silicate grains from supernovae
The structures and biological activities of the lipo-oligosaccharide nodulation signals produced by type I and II strains of Bradyrhizobium japonicum
Bradyrhizobium japonicum produces lipo-oligosaccharide signal molecules that induce deformation of root hairs and meristematic activity on soybeans. B. japonicum USDA135 (a Type I strain) produces modified chitin pentasaccharide molecules with either a terminal N-C16:0- or N-C18:1-glucosamine with and without an O-acetyl group at C-6 and with 2-O-methylfucose linked to C-6 of the reducing N-acetylglucosamine. An additional molecule has N-C16:1-glucosamine and no O-acetyl group. All of these molecules cause root hair deformation on Vicia sativa and Glycine soja. The C18:1-containing molecules were tested and found to induce meristem formation on G. soja. USDA61 (a Type II strain) produces eight additional molecules. Five have a carbamoyl group on the terminal N-acylglucosamine. Six have chitin tetrasaccharide backbones. Three have a terminal N-acyl-N-methylglucosaminosyl residue. In four molecules, the reducing-end N-acetylglucosamine is glycosidically linked to glycerol and has a branching fucosyl, rather than a 2-O-methylfucosyl, residue. One molecule has a terminal N-acylglucosamine that has both acetyl and carbamoyl groups (one each).Plant science
Tests of the Equivalence Principle with Neutral Kaons
We test the Principle of Equivalence for particles and antiparticles, using
CPLEAR data on tagged K0 and K0bar decays into pi^+ pi^-. For the first time,
we search for possible annual, monthly and diurnal modulations of the
observables |eta_{+-}| and phi_{+-}, that could be correlated with variations
in astrophysical potentials. Within the accuracy of CPLEAR, the measured values
of |eta_{+-}| and phi_{+-} are found not to be correlated with changes of the
gravitational potential. We analyze data assuming effective scalar, vector and
tensor interactions, and we conclude that the Principle of Equivalence between
particles and antiparticles holds to a level of 6.5, 4.3 and 1.8 x 10^{-9},
respectively, for scalar, vector and tensor potentials originating from the Sun
with a range much greater than the distance Earth-Sun. We also study
energy-dependent effects that might arise from vector or tensor interactions.
Finally, we compile upper limits on the gravitational coupling difference
between K0 and K0bar as a function of the scalar, vector and tensor interaction
range.Comment: 15 pages latex 2e, five figures, one style file (cernart.csl)

Realistic Model of the Nucleon Spectral Function in Few- and Many- Nucleon Systems
By analysing the high momentum features of the nucleon momentum distribution
in light and complex nuclei, it is argued that the basic two-nucleon
configurations generating the structure of the nucleon Spectral Function at
high values of the nucleon momentum and removal energy, can be properly
described by a factorised ansatz for the nuclear wave function, which leads to
a nucleon Spectral Function in the form of a convolution integral involving the
momentum distributions describing the relative and center-of-mass motion of a
correlated nucleon-nucleon pair embedded in the medium. The Spectral Functions
of and infinite nuclear matter resulting from the convolution formula
and from many-body calculations are compared, and a very good agreement in a
wide range of values of nucleon momentum and removal energy is found.
Applications of the model to the analysis of inclusive and exclusive processes
are presented, illustrating those features of the cross section which are
sensitive to that part of the Spectral Function which is governed by
short-range and tensor nucleon-nucleon correlations.Comment: 40 pages Latex , 16 ps figures available from the above e-mail
