    New highly charged iron(III) metal-organic cube stabilized by a bulky amine.

    In this work, we report a new octanuclear cluster based on FeIII and the ligand 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid, [Et3NH]12[Fe8(IDC)12]·10DMF·13H2O (1), with a metal core containing eight FeIII connected by only one type of organic ligand. A peak at 573 m/z in the mass spectra of the compound suggests the adduct species {[Fe8(IDC)12]+8H}4-. By X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the oxidation state of the iron cation was confirmed to be 3+, also identifying the presence of a quaternary nitrogen species, which act as a countercation of the anionic metal core [Fe8(IDC)12]12-. Mössbauer spectra recorded at different temperatures show an isomer shift and quadrupole splitting parameters that confirm the existence of only FeIII-HS in the structure of 1. X-ray analysis reveals that compound 1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic system space group Ibam, confirming a molecular cluster structure with an almost regular cube as geometry, with the FeIII atoms located at the corners of the cube and connected by μ-1κ2 N,O:2κ2 N',O‴-IDC3- bridges. Additionally, the magnetic measurements reveal a weak antiferromagnetic coupling in the Fe8 III coordination cluster (J = -3.8 cm-1). To the best of our knowledge, 1 is the first member of the family of cubes assembled with 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid and FeIII cation, exhibiting high pH stability over a broad pH range, making it an ideal candidate for the design of supramolecular structures and metal-organic frameworks

    Phenological variation of Rhizophora mangle and ground water chemistry associated to changes of the precipitation

    Mangrove forests are vulnerable to long term changes of temperature and precipitation. In this study, we want to know if the precipitation regime significantly varies among years and seasons during a five-yr period (2006-2010) at the North of Laguna de Términos, Campeche, Mexico. In addition, we want to know how the salinity and the redox potential of the ground water of a monospecific mangrove forest of Rhizophora mangle are modified according to this variation. Finally, we describe the total litterfall, and the flowers and hypocotiles production of the studied mangrove and analyze these responses as a function of the environment variables. A repeated measures ANOVA showed that precipitation significantly varied among years and seasons (F=15.83, p<0.003; F=29.8, p<0.0001). The salinity and the redox potential were also significant effects of the same temporal variation (F=1003.25, p<0.0001; F=213.32, p<0.0001), as well as the total litterfall and the hypocotile production (F=39.35, p<0.001; F=8.74, p<0.025). Precipitation was directly proportional to the hypocotile production (r=0.43, p<0.005) and inversely proportional to the salinity ground water (r= - 0.36, p<0.02). The precipitation and the salinity play significant roles on the variation of the litterfall and the hypocotile production of the studied mangrove (R2= 0.85; p<0.05 and R2= 0.70; p<0.05). Our study suggests a resilient ability of R. mangle, whichallows it to tolerate seasonal and annual changes of the precipitation

    Amplified Genes May Be Overexpressed, Unchanged, or Downregulated in Cervical Cancer Cell Lines

    Several copy number-altered regions (CNAs) have been identified in the genome of cervical cancer, notably, amplifications of 3q and 5p. However, the contribution of copy-number alterations to cervical carcinogenesis is unresolved because genome-wide there exists a lack of correlation between copy-number alterations and gene expression. In this study, we investigated whether CNAs in the cell lines CaLo, CaSki, HeLa, and SiHa were associated with changes in gene expression. On average, 19.2% of the cell-line genomes had CNAs. However, only 2.4% comprised minimal recurrent regions (MRRs) common to all the cell lines. Whereas 3q had limited common gains (13%), 5p was entirely duplicated recurrently. Genome-wide, only 15.6% of genes located in CNAs changed gene expression; in contrast, the rate in MRRs was up to 3 times this. Chr 5p was confirmed entirely amplified by FISH; however, maximum 33.5% of the explored genes in 5p were deregulated. In 3q, this rate was 13.4%. Even in 3q26, which had 5 MRRs and 38.7% recurrently gained SNPs, the rate was only 15.1%. Interestingly, up to 19% of deregulated genes in 5p and 73% in 3q26 were downregulated, suggesting additional factors were involved in gene repression. The deregulated genes in 3q and 5p occurred in clusters, suggesting local chromatin factors may also influence gene expression. In regions amplified discontinuously, downregulated genes increased steadily as the number of amplified SNPs increased (p<0.01, Spearman's correlation). Therefore, partial gene amplification may function in silencing gene expression. Additional genes in 1q, 3q and 5p could be involved in cervical carcinogenesis, specifically in apoptosis. These include PARP1 in 1q, TNFSF10 and ECT2 in 3q and CLPTM1L, AHRR, PDCD6, and DAP in 5p. Overall, gene expression and copy-number profiles reveal factors other than gene dosage, like epigenetic or chromatin domains, may influence gene expression within the entirely amplified genome segments

Se da cuenta en la provincia de Sevilla de las dificultades del Colegio de Farmacéuticos en el periodo de la Guerra Civil y la Posguerra (1936-1949), del proceso de colegiación obligatoria a partir de 1916, pinceladas históricas sobre los farmacéuticos cántabros del siglo XIX, del Colegio de Farmacéuticos de Filipinas a finales del XIX, de los conflictos de los farmacéuticos en las reuniones sanitarias de mitad del XX, y del papel de los farmacéuticos titulares en la potabilización de las aguas de consumo en Plentzia (Vizcaya). 2) Podemos destacar también todos los trabajos que giran en torno a diferentes medicamentos y productos farmacéuticos, entre ellos estudios históricos sobre piedras preciosas, medicamentos para tratar heridas, quina contra las tercianas, opio, alexifármacos, medicamentos homeopáticos, talidomida o curiosos productos como el Licor del Polo. 3) El papel de los laboratorios farmacéuticos como la Casa Nestlé durante la Guerra Civil española y el franquismo, diferentes laboratorios onubenses durante este mismo periodo, el papel del Instituto de Higiene Militar y la experimentación con insecticidas clorados sintéticos en la posguerra española, aglutinan el tercer cuerpo temático. 4) Finalmente, podemos destacar los trabajos que tienen una componente publicitaria, divulgadora y social entre los que cabe destacar el estudio del NO-DO y los diferentes noticieros y documentales sobre temas farmacéuticos que resultan muy ilustrativos.     Omecamtiv mecarbil in chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, GALACTIC‐HF: baseline characteristics and comparison with contemporary clinical trials

    Aims: The safety and efficacy of the novel selective cardiac myosin activator, omecamtiv mecarbil, in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is tested in the Global Approach to Lowering Adverse Cardiac outcomes Through Improving Contractility in Heart Failure (GALACTIC‐HF) trial. Here we describe the baseline characteristics of participants in GALACTIC‐HF and how these compare with other contemporary trials. Methods and Results: Adults with established HFrEF, New York Heart Association functional class (NYHA) ≥ II, EF ≤35%, elevated natriuretic peptides and either current hospitalization for HF or history of hospitalization/ emergency department visit for HF within a year were randomized to either placebo or omecamtiv mecarbil (pharmacokinetic‐guided dosing: 25, 37.5 or 50 mg bid). 8256 patients [male (79%), non‐white (22%), mean age 65 years] were enrolled with a mean EF 27%, ischemic etiology in 54%, NYHA II 53% and III/IV 47%, and median NT‐proBNP 1971 pg/mL. HF therapies at baseline were among the most effectively employed in contemporary HF trials. GALACTIC‐HF randomized patients representative of recent HF registries and trials with substantial numbers of patients also having characteristics understudied in previous trials including more from North America (n = 1386), enrolled as inpatients (n = 2084), systolic blood pressure &lt; 100 mmHg (n = 1127), estimated glomerular filtration rate &lt; 30 mL/min/1.73 m2 (n = 528), and treated with sacubitril‐valsartan at baseline (n = 1594). Conclusions: GALACTIC‐HF enrolled a well‐treated, high‐risk population from both inpatient and outpatient settings, which will provide a definitive evaluation of the efficacy and safety of this novel therapy, as well as informing its potential future implementation

    Novel 3d/4f Metal Organic Networks Containing Co<sup>II</sup> Chiral Chains

    Novel 3d/4f heterometallic three-dimensional (3D) networks, based on Co<sup>II</sup>/Gd<sup>III</sup> cations and imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid (H<sub>3</sub>IDC) and oxalate which are acting as main and auxiliary ligand, respectively, were hydro-/solvothermally synthesized using different synthetic strategies. While [Gd­(H<sub>2</sub>O)­(C<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub>)­Co­(IDC)­(H<sub>2</sub>O)<sub>1.26</sub>­(CH<sub>3</sub>CH<sub>2</sub>OH)<sub>0.74</sub>]­·1.75H<sub>2</sub>O (<b>1</b>) was obtained in a one-pot synthesis, [Gd­(H<sub>2</sub>O)­Co­(HIDC)­(C<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub>)<sub>1.5</sub>]­·2.65H<sub>2</sub>O (<b>2</b>) was obtained using a Co<sup>II</sup> complex precursor. Both compounds crystallize in a monoclinic system within the centrosymmetric space group <i>C</i>2/<i>c</i>. These structures are characterized by presenting an intricate covalent 3D network. A notable aspect is the fact that in these centrosymmetric structures Co<sup>II</sup>(IDC/HIDC) moieties are disposed along the networks forming alternate chiral chains, Λ and Δ. From a magnetic point of view, both (<b>1</b>) and (<b>2</b>) have antiferromagnetic interactions, but in (<b>1</b>) a magnetic order appears below 8 K, probably as product of uncompensated antiferromagnetic interactions produced by centers with different spin values. This ferrimagnetic behavior was verified by the hysteresis curve at 1.8 K, and by well-defined maxima, both in the in-phase and out-of-phase <i>ac</i> susceptibilities curves. Remarkably, this work reports efficient synthetic methods through which it is possible to generate 3d/4f networks, these being scarce in the literature

    Diagnosis of Familial Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome due to a Paternal Cryptic Chromosomal Rearrangement by Conventional and Molecular Cytogenetic Techniques

    The use of conventional cytogenetic techniques in combination with fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) microarrays is necessary for the identification of cryptic rearrangements in the diagnosis of chromosomal syndromes. We report two siblings, a boy of 9 years and 9 months of age and his 7-years- and 5-month-old sister, with the classic Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) phenotype. Using high-resolution GTG- and NOR-banding karyotypes, as well as FISH analysis, we characterized a pure 4p deletion in both sibs and a balanced rearrangement in their father, consisting in an insertion of 4p material within a nucleolar organizing region of chromosome 15. Copy number variant (CNV) analysis using SNP arrays showed that both siblings have a similar size of 4p deletion (~6.5 Mb). Our results strongly support the need for conventional cytogenetic and FISH analysis, as well as high-density microarray mapping for the optimal characterization of the genetic imbalance in patients with WHS; parents must always be studied for recognizing cryptic balanced chromosomal rearrangements for an adequate genetic counseling
