Towards a manipulation of memory by science?: a contextualized analysis of the films Final Cut and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

In this article, after a general introduction about a brain prosthesis project - a substitute for the hippocampus -, started in 2003 by a team of neuroscientists from the University of Southern California, and experiments started between 2007 and 2009 by scientists of various nationalities, we present in more detail some of the main results of the latter, published in scientific articles, which allow us to predict some potential risks in the future, and pose ethical problems, for worthy intentions that scientists may have. Following this, we discuss films Final Cut (2004) by Omar Naїm and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), directed by Michel Gondry, which present multiple points of contact with the aforementioned scientific projects, anticipating some of the foreseeable dangers, and allow us to discuss the future possibility of a manipulation of memory (and of oblivion), through science. Although they are fiction films, much of what is shown in both is compatible (except for some aspects) with real neuroscience research projects that are currently underway.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Modelagem matemática na EJA

Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (especialização)—Universidade de Brasília, Universidade Aberta do Brasil, Faculdade de Educação, III Curso de Especialização em Educação na Diversidade e Cidadania, com Ênfase em EJA, 2015.Este projeto apresenta os múltiplos aspectos favorecidos pela Modelagem Matemática como alternativa metodológica. Para isso, o projeto apoia-se nos princípios defendidos pelos Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais (PCN), sob a perspectiva da Educação, diversidade, cidadania e mundo do trabalho. O tema escolhido para elaborar o Projeto de Intervenção Local surgiu da necessidade dos estudantes do terceiro período do segundo segmento da EJA em resolver a situação-problema sobre o consumo de energia dos aparelhos eletrodomésticos e economizar na conta de luz, e assim, explorar os conceitos matemáticos e propiciar o desenvolvimento de capacidades como observação, análise, interpretação e validação de dados. Além de tornar a casa do aluno uma extensão da sala de aula, através da pesquisa de campo e coleta de dados, a Modelagem promove um ambiente estimulante de ensino mobilizando o potencial criativo dos estudantes. Dessa forma, acredita-se que a proposta permite ao estudante utilizar a modelagem matemática como uma ferramenta para compreender os conceitos matemáticos e para resolver problemas cotidianos de diversas áreas do conhecimento.This project presents the multiple aspects favored by the Mathematical Modeling as a methodological alternative. For this, the project is based on the principles defended by the National Curriculum Parameters (PCN), from the perspective of education, diversity, citizenship and the world of work. The theme chosen for drawing up the Local Intervention Project arose from the need of the students of the third sentence of the second segment of the EJA to solve the problem situation on the energy consumption of electrical appliances and save on the electricity bill, and thus explore the concepts mathematical and provide capacity building as observation, analysis, interpretation and data validation. In addition to making the home of the student an extension of the classroom, through field research and data collection, the modeling promotes a stimulating educational environment mobilizing the creative potential of students. Thus, it is believed that the proposal allows students to use mathematical modeling as a tool to understand mathematical concepts and solve everyday problems from different areas of knowledge

As despesas municipais e os gastos sociais na região Sul do Brasil Municipal and social spending in South region of Brazil

O objetivo desse artigo é analisar a evolução dos recursos públicos disponíveis e sua alocação para os gastos sociaisna região Sul do Brasil. Os dados utilizados foram retirados da Secretaria do Tesouro Nacional. Para a análiseefetuada, agruparam-se os municípios da região Sul de acordo com o contingente populacional, classificando-osem quatro categorias: até 10.000 habitantes; de 10.001 a 50.000; de 50.001 a 100.000 e mais de 100.001 habitantes.Os gastos sociais tiveram como base as categorias de gastos mais significativas do ponto de vista desua participação nos dispêndios municipais: Educação e Cultura; Saúde e Saneamento Básico; Assistência ePrevidência social; Habitação e Urbanismo; e Segurança Pública. Verificou-se que o Governo Federal sofreu umaqueda na participação da receita tributária enquanto houve um aumento da participação de Estados e municípios.Também ocorreu perda de posição dentro do total das receitas dos Estados para os municípios, ao mesmotempo em que houve aumento dos encargos sociais dos municípios, com destaque para o aumento dos gastosrealizados com saúde, saneamento e segurança pública, apontando uma mudança no perfil dos gastos sociais

Comportamentos Suicidários em Estudantes do Ensino Superior: Factores de Risco e de Protecção

Neste artigo abordam-se algumas questões relacionadas com os comportamentos suicidários em estudantes do Ensino Superior, tendo por base uma revisão sistemática da literatura. Neste contexto, faz-se o enquadramento conceptual dos comportamentos suicidários, clarificando os conceitos de Ideação suicida, Tentativa de suicídio, Para-suicídio e Suicídio. Partindo de alguns dados epidemiológicos disponíveis, faz-se uma reflexão sobre a dimensão desta problemática, possíveis causas dos comportamentos suicidários e dos factores mais recorrentemente associados ao risco de suicídio nos jovens. Procura-se realçar a importância do reconhecimento de possíveis indicadores de risco e de protecção nos domínios da promoção da saúde mental dos jovens e da prevenção do suicídio em meio académico

A comparative study of ultrasonic velocity and attenuation in the evaluation of bone healing

OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar a velocidade e atenuação ultra-sônica, na avaliação in vitro da consolidação óssea. MÉTODO: Foram empregados no estudo 17 carneiros, com massa corporal média de 37 kg, divididos entre grupos controle e três experimentais, conforme o período de observação pós-operatória de 30, 60 e 90 dias. As osteotomias foram realizadas nas tíbias direitas dos animais, ficando as esquerdas como controle. O processo de consolidação foi acompanhado por meio de avaliação radiográfica a cada duas semanas. Ao fim do período de observação estipulado para cada grupo, os animais sofreram eutanásia e as tíbias foram removidas para a análise ultra-sonométrica in vitro. Foram medidos e correlacionados a velocidade de propagação transversal e longitudinal do ultra-som e a atenuação do ultra-som (BUA) transversal na região da osteotomia. RESULTADOS: A velocidade de propagação do ultra-som (transversal e longitudinal, in vitro) aumentou com o avançar da consolidação, sendo as diferenças significantes em relação ao grupo controle e entre a maioria dos grupos experimentais. Já a BUA diminuiu, sendo parte das diferenças significantes entre os grupos. CONCLUSÃO: O método de avaliação da consolidação pelos parâmetros da ultra-sonometria é factível, com resultados confiáveis e precisos para medir a consolidação óssea.OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to compare the in vitro ultrasonic velocity and attenuation in bone healing evaluation. METHODS: Seventeen sheep weighting 37 kg in average were used, being divided into two groups of five animals each and one group of seven animals, according to the postoperative follow-up time (30, 60 and 90 days, respectively). Osteotomies were performed on the right tibiae and the intact left tibiae of the 17 animals were used as control. The healing process was monitored with conventional conventional radiographs taken at two-week intervals. The animals were sacrificed at the end of the corresponding followup period and both right and left tibiae were removed for in vitro underwater and contact ultrasound evaluations. The transverse and longitudinal ultrasound propagation velocity (USPV) and the broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) were measured and correlated. RESULTS: USPV increased with the progression of the healing process, while BUA decreased, with significant differences between the experimental and control groups and between the experimental groups, for most of the comparisons. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the method using ultrasound as employed in this investigation is feasible and reliable for evaluating cortical bone healing

Do Atta sexdens rubropilosa workers prepare leaves and bait pellets in similar ways to their symbiotic fungus?

Leaf-cutting ants rely on the obligate symbiosis with a fungus, Leucoagaricus gongylophorus, on which they feed. This fungus garden is maintained preferentially with green leaves in combination with other tissues of plant origin. The nutritional composition of this symbiotic relationship is extremely beneficial for the colony, representing the main food source for larvae and an important food component of adult workers. The objective of this study was to observe the behavioral repertoire of Atta sexdens rubropilosa during the preparation and incorporation of two different substrates, leaves and bait pellets, as well as the participation of each caste in these processes this process. The first substrate offered to the colonies were Citrus sp. leaves cut into disks and the second were pellets of citrus pulp bait formulated without the active ingredient. The observations were made under a stereomicroscope and were started when the first portion of the substrate offered was carried to the fungus garden. The behaviors executed during preparation and incorporation of the leaf disks, and subsequently of the bait pellets, were recorded using three colonies, with six repetitions of 5 and 7 hours per colony, respectively. Eight behavioral acts were recorded for the three castes found, irrespective of the substrate processed by the workers. Licking was the most frequently executed behavioral act, which occurred throughout the observation period, regardless of the substrate offered. Gardeners and generalists were the castes most engaged in the execution of this behavior. Considering the large number of individuals involved in the execution of this task, it can be concluded that this behavior is important for dispersion of the active ingredient and contamination of workers inside the colony.

Field hospitals to face COVID-19: Requirements and lessons learned in the design and construction of the Lagoa Barra Hospital - Brazil

The construction of field hospitals has been a strategy adopted worldwide to face the consequences of the pandemic impacts caused by COVID-19 on healthcare systems. Specific characteristics of this pandemic, such as different ways and speeds of the disease transmission, and the implications at the population health and the productive system, has made the project, management, and construction of field hospitals for the patients with COVID-19 present specific features. In this work, for each phase of the FHLB  implantation, we present the main concepts, premises, restrictions, and challenges, focusing mainly on the needs programs of the project that guided the configuration of the environments, the definition of the circulation flows,  the typology of the beds, the main management tools used during the project's planning and control process, and in the lessons learned

Referências artísticas no Cinema: contribuição dos Departamentos artísticos e dos Directores de fotografia

Ao contrário da pintura o cinema é um meio que impõe um processo colaborativo, embora o realizador seja responsável em última instância pelo resultado final dum filme, auxiliado pelos seus colaboradores mais próximos: o director de fotografia e um desenhador de produção ou director artístico. Desde o seu nascimento o cinema incorporou referências artísticas, e tornou-se necessário a partir de certa altura constituir departamentos artísticos, que com o advento do cinema a cores ganharam progressivamente maior importância. Pouco a pouco, e sobretudo nas grandes produções, o desenhador de produção e/ ou director artístico assumiram funções decisivas na arte do cinema. Abordamos exemplos de alguns desenhadores de produção mais relevantes, na etapa decisiva do processo de pré-produção dum filme, assim como alguns directores de fotografia, cujo trabalho bem sucedido depende amiúde de uma boa colaboração com os departamentos artísticos.CESAP, no âmbito do PROJECTO ESAP/2016-2017/P 38/DAV.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
