    Relationship between physical fitness and mental heath in primary school children.

    ABSTRACT There is scientific evidence that physical fitness is a biological marker of health. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between physical fitness and state weight with mental health in primary school children from the southeast of Span. An cross sectional design was implemented, evaluating handgrip strength, explosive lower body strength, aerobic capacity and speed-agility through ALPHA-fitness test battery of a sample of 214 students between 8 and 11 years. The analysis of simple variance showed that physical fitness and state weight is not associated significantly with the mental health. The results indicate that physical fitness and state weight is not a differentiator of mental health in school children from the southeast of Spain.     A simple algorithm for optimization and model fitting: AGA (asexual genetic algorithm)

    Context. Mathematical optimization can be used as a computational tool to obtain the optimal solution to a given problem in a systematic and efficient way. For example, in twice-differentiable functions and problems with no constraints, the optimization consists of finding the points where the gradient of the objective function is zero and using the Hessian matrix to classify the type of each point. Sometimes, however it is impossible to compute these derivatives and other type of techniques must be employed such as the steepest descent/ascent method and more sophisticated methods such as those based on the evolutionary algorithms. Aims. We present a simple algorithm based on the idea of genetic algorithms (GA) for optimization. We refer to this algorithm as AGA (Asexual Genetic Algorithm) and apply it to two kinds of problems: the maximization of a function where classical methods fail and model fitting in astronomy. For the latter case, we minimize the chi-square function to estimate the parameters in two examples: the orbits of exoplanets by taking a set of radial velocity data, and the spectral energy distribution (SED) observed towards a YSO (Young Stellar Object). Methods. The algorithm AGA may also be called genetic, although it differs from standard genetic algorithms in two main aspects: a) the initial population is not encoded, and b) the new generations are constructed by asexual reproduction. Results. Applying our algorithm in optimizing some complicated functions, we find the global maxima within a few iterations. For model fitting to the orbits of exoplanets and the SED of a YSO, we estimate the parameters and their associated errors.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, Astronomy and Astrophysics (in press

    Revisiting 2D Numerical Models for the 19th century outbursts of η\eta Carinae

    We present here new results of two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of the eruptive events of the 1840s (the great) and the 1890s (the minor) eruptions suffered by the massive star η\eta Car. The two bipolar nebulae commonly known as the Homunculus and the little Homunculus were formed from the interaction of these eruptive events with the underlying stellar wind. As in previous work (Gonzalez et al. 2004a, 2004b), we assume here an interacting, nonspherical multiple-phase wind scenario to explain the shape and the kinematics of both Homunculi, but adopt a more realistic parametrization of the phases of the wind. During the 1890s eruptive event, the outflow speed {\it decreased} for a short period of time. This fact suggests that the little Homunculus is formed when the eruption ends, from the impact of the post-outburst η\eta Car wind (that follows the 1890s event) with the eruptive flow (rather than by the collision of the eruptive flow with the pre-outburst wind, as claimed in previous models; Gonzalez et al. 2004a, 2004b). Our simulations reproduce quite well the shape and the observed expansion speed of the large Homunculus. The little Homunculus (which is embedded within the large Homunculus) becomes Rayleigh-Taylor unstable and develop filamentary structures that resembles the spatial features observed in the polar caps. In addition, we find that the interior cavity between the two Homunculi is partially filled by material that is expelled during the decades following the great eruption. This result may be connected with the observed double-shell structure in the polar lobes of the η\eta Car nebula. Finally, as in previous work, we find the formation of tenuous, equatorial, high-speed features that seem to be related to the observed equatorial skirt of η\eta Car.Comment: accepted for publication in MNRA

    Dynamic optimization of a gas-liquid reactor

In this case, the mathematical model presented for gas-liquid mass-transfer processes is based on mass balances of the transferred substance in both phases. The identificability property of this model is studied in order to confirm the possible identifiable parameters of the model from a given set of experimental data. For that, a different modeled of the system is given. A procedure for the identification is proposed. On the other hand, the aim of this work is to solve the quadratic optimal control problem, using an explicit representation of the model. The problem includes some results on controllability, observability and stability criteria and the relation between these properties and the parameters of the model.     A direct method to obtain a realization of a polynomial matrix and its applications

This method provides the final formulation of a minimal realization directly from a full rank factorization of a specific given matrix.
