    A Broadband Bow-Tie Cavity-Backed Slot for Traveling-Wave Arrays in the Millimeter-Wave Band

    Get PDF
The use of bow-tie geometries to enhance the characteristics of a radiating element previously proposed by the authors is presented. The previous element consisted of a broadband cavity-backed slot in transmission configuration. The bow-tie shape of the cavity improves the bandwidth of the element and the bow-tie slot keeps constant the amount of power radiated. The structure is designed for the millimeterwave band. The enhancement of the element performance is shown through simulation results. A fractional bandwidth of more than 100% is achieved in the 70 GHz band, and the radiated power remains almost constant throughout 30 GHz of the bandwidth. These results show a great improvement over the original radiating element. The radiating structure has the ideal characteristics for building series-fed reconfigurable arrays for wide-band applications in the millimeter-wave band.

Proximate and ultimate insights in the evolution of color vision in tropical freshwater fish

Evolutionary biology aims to understand diversity and the different mechanisms shaping this organismal variation. Furthermore, several animals vary greatly in coloration patterns and the adaptive mechanisms they have to optimally perceive visual signals in their light environment. The visual system of fish, due to their extensive variation in spectral sensitivities and their numerous adaptations to the underwater light environment, offers a unique opportunity to disentangle this phenotypic diversity. Throughout this dissertation, I analyze the visual systems of two major groups of Neotropical teleosts: cichlids and characins. Through transcriptome, genome and physiological experiments, I characterized the extant opsin gene complements of their visual system, which is a product of highly dynamic opsin gene evolution, and their color vision, which is based on the expression of at least three spectrally different visual pigments. The diversity of visual pigments found in these fish is the product of several spectral tuning mechanisms, which they use to fine-tune their spectral sensitivities to specific wavelengths. Our results follow the sensitivity hypothesis because the visual sensitivities of cichlids and characins match the available light in Neotropical ecosystems. Furthermore, through behavioral assays complemented with visual modeling, I show that African cichlids possess true color vision, the capacity of discriminating color regardless of brightness. This is followed by behavioral experiments analyzing the limits of their chromatic discrimination and discussing the adaptive significance of color vision and its relevance in the visual ecology of Lake Malawi. This dissertation enhances our understanding of color vision in freshwater fish using molecular and behavioral methods. This work encompasses experiments analyzing the genetic complement of visual pigments, builds knowledge in the evolution of these molecules and their relationship with aquatic environments, and analyzes the color dimensionality of visual systems through behavioral trials. Overall, this dissertation demonstrates the evolution of fish color vision with several methodologies highlighting the importance of an integrative and comparative approach in vision research

Elemento radiante de banda ancha en microstrip cerrada para arrays alimentados en serie

A previous radiating element in transmission configuration proposed by the authors is alternatively implemented using enclosed microstrip configuration. The new implementation overcomes fabrication issues and improves its compatibility with microstrip technology. Simulation and measurement of the element show a broad impedance bandwidth and a unilateral radiation pattern. To illustrate the applicability of the element, a preliminary analysis of a leaky-wave series-fed array with 7 radiating elements is carried out. Simulation results of the array show a 48% fractional bandwidth and a single, frequencysteerable beam. This work was supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte (Programa para la Formación del Profesorado Universitario) under grant FPU15/06457, by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovaci´on y Universidades (MCIU) (Contrato Juan de la Cierva-Incorporaci´on) under Grant IJC2018-038440-I, and by the MCIU, AEI, and FEDER (Programa Estatal de I+D+i Orientada a los Retos de la Sociedad) under grant RTI2018-097098-J-I00.An upgraded version of the complementary stripslot radiating element is reviewed. The original radiating element consists in a microstrip-fed slot in transmission configuration. In the proposed modification, the slot is backed by a cavity in order to obtain unidirectional radiation. The presence of this cavity changes the behavior of the slot. A new equivalent circuit is used to propose a design methodology for broadband operation. Two array designs are simulated and implemented: a phased array and a log-periodic array. Promising experimental results verify the unidirectional radiation and the wide bandwidth of these antennas.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

Nefrolitotomía percutánea en pacientes con trastornos de la coagulación: reporte de caso

Objective To report a case of percutaneous nephrolithotomy in patients with protein C and S deficiency. Introduction Patients with protein C and S deficiency have a high risk of thromboembolic events reporting rates of 6% and 8.4%, respectively. Case Report A 43-year-old female patient with a history of protein C and S deficiency with chronic warfarin anticoagulation for deep venous thrombosis (DVT). CT scan with full right staghorn calculi. Enoxaparin was administered bridge therapy. She was taken to right percutaneous nephrolithotomy, access was through the lower calyx. Because it was not possible to access the calculus of the middle and upper calyx it was necessary to perform a second puncture in the upper calyx, leaving the patient free of calculus. Full anticoagulation was resumed at 12 hours postoperatively without associated bleeding. Discussion Patients with protein C and S deficits are at high risk for thromboembolic events. Kefer et al. conducted a study evaluating the efficacy of bridge therapy in patients on NLP, finding that warfarin anticoagulation can be discontinued 5 days earlier and restarted 5 days after the surgical procedure without the need for enoxaparin bridging therapy. Results The protein C and S deficiency corresponds to an entity, with a very low prevalence and conditions the requirement of oral anticoagulants indefinitely. It was possible to perform a surgical procedure without hemorrhagic or thromboembolic complications. Copyright © 2019, Sociedad Colombiana de Urología
