    Thermodynamics of black holes in the deformed Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity

    We study thermodynamics of black holes in the deformed Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity with coupling constant λ\lambda. For λ=1\lambda=1, the black hole behaves the Reissner-Norstr\"om black hole. Hence, this is different from the Schwarzschild black hole of Einstein gravity. A connection to the generalized uncertainty principle is explored to understand the Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz black holes.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, final version to appear in PL

    Validity of the “Streitberger” Needle in a Chinese Population with Acupuncture: A Randomized, Single-Blinded, and Crossover Pilot Study

    We studied the validity of a “Streitberger” needle as a valid approach in a Chinese population with experience of acupuncture. Volunteers were recruited from students of the School of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. Sixty students receiving education in acupuncture theory and experience in practical acupuncture were tested in study determining whether needling with the placebo needle felt any different from conventional acupuncture. Outcomes included measures of penetration sensation, VAS ratings, and Deqi sensation questionnaire. As a result, needle penetration, VAS ratings for either needle and Deqi sensation were not significantly different between two kinds of needles. Our findings show that the use of “Streitberger” needle is credible in a Chinese population with acupuncture experience

    We find the entropy of Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole in the deformed Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity by using the first law of thermodynamics. When applying generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) to Schwarzschild black hole, the entropy S=A/4+(π/ω)ln(A/4)S=A/4+(\pi/\omega)\ln(A/4) may be interpreted as the GUP-inspired black hole entropy. Hence, it implies that the duality in the entropy between the Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole and GUP-inspired Schwarzschild black hole is present.Comment: 11 pages, version to appear in PL

    The macro-behavior of agents' opinion under the influence of an external field

    In this paper, a model about the evolution of opinion on small world networks is proposed. We studied the macro-behavior of the agents' opinion and the relative change rate as time elapses. The external field was found to play an important role in making the opinion s(t)s(t) balance or increase, and without the influence of the external field, the relative change rate γ(t)\gamma(t) shows a nonlinear increasing behavior as time runs. What's more, this nonlinear increasing behavior is independent of the initial condition, the strength of the external field and the time that we cancel the external field. Maybe the results can reflect some phenomenon in our society, such as the function of the macro-control in China or the Mass Media in our society.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Identifying the proton loading site cluster in the ba₃ cytochrome c oxidase that loads and traps protons

    Cytochrome c Oxidase (CcO) is the terminal electron acceptor in aerobic respiratory chain, reducing O₂ to water. The released free energy is stored by pumping protons through the protein, maintaining the transmembrane electrochemical gradient. Protons are held transiently in a proton loading site (PLS) that binds and releases protons driven by the electron transfer reaction cycle. Multi-Conformation Continuum Electrostatics (MCCE) was applied to crystal structures and Molecular Dynamics snapshots of the B-type Thermus thermophilus CcO. Six residues are identified as the PLS, binding and releasing protons as the charges on heme b and the binuclear center are changed: the heme a₃ propionic acids, Asp287, Asp372, His376 and Glu126B. The unloaded state has one proton and the loaded state two protons on these six residues. Different input structures, modifying the PLS conformation, show different proton distributions and result in different proton pumping behaviors. One loaded and one unloaded protonation states have the loaded/unloaded states close in energy so the PLS binds and releases a proton through the reaction cycle. The alternative proton distributions have state energies too far apart to be shifted by the electron transfers so are locked in loaded or unloaded states. Here the protein can use active states to load and unload protons, but has nearby trapped states, which stabilize PLS protonation state, providing new ideas about the CcO proton pumping mechanism. The distance between the PLS residues Asp287 and His376 correlates with the energy difference between loaded and unloaded states

    An Exposure Meter of Lijiang Fiber-fed High-Resolution Spectrograph

    In 2016, an exposure meter was installed on the Lijiang Fiber-fed High-Resolution Spectrograph to monitor the coupling of starlight to the science fiber during observations. Based on it, we investigated a method to estimate the exposure flux of the CCD in real time by using the counts of the photomultiplier tubes (PMT) of the exposure meter, and developed a piece of software to optimize the control of the exposure time. First, by using flat-field lamp observations, we determined that there is a linear and proportional relationship between the total counts of the PMT and the exposure flux of the CCD. Second, using historical observations of different spectral types, the corresponding relational conversion factors were determined and obtained separately. Third, the method was validated using actual observation data, which showed that all values of the coefficient of determination were greater than 0.92. Finally, software was developed to display the counts of the PMT and the estimated exposure flux of the CCD in real-time during the observation, providing a visual reference for optimizing the exposure time control.Comment: Published in Research in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Free Space Ranging Utilizing Chaotic Light

    We report our recent works on free space ranging with chaotic light. Using a laser diode with optical feedback as chaotic source, a prototype of chaotic lidar has been developed and it can achieve a range-independent resolution of 18 cm and measurable distance of 130 m at least. And its antijamming performance is presented experimentally and numerically. Finally, we, respectively, employ the wavelet denoising method and the correlation average discrete-component elimination algorithm to detect the chaotic signal in noisy environment and suppress the side-lobe noise of the correlation trace

    Lysosome-Membrane Fusion Mediated Superoxide Production in Hyperglycaemia-Induced Endothelial Dysfunction

    Lysosomal exocytosis and fusion to cellular membrane is critical in the oxidative stress formation of endothelium under apoptotic stimulus. We investigated the role therein of it in hyperglycaemia-induced endothelial dysfunction. The lysosome-membrane fusion was shown by the expression of lamp1, the lysosomal membrane marker, on cellular membrane and the transportation of lysosomal symbolic enzymes into cultural medium. We also examined the ceramide production, lipid rafts (LRs) clustering, colocalization of gp91phox, a NADPH oxidase subunit (NOX) to LRs clusters, superoxide (O2.-) formation and nitric oxide (NO) content in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and the endothelium-dependent NO-mediated vasodilation in isolated rat aorta. As compared to normal glucose (5.6 mmol/l, Ctrl) incubation, high glucose (22 mmol/l, HG) exposure facilitated the lysosome-membrane fusion in HUVEC shown by significantly increased quantity of lamp1 protein on cellular membrane and enhanced activity of lysosomal symbolized enzymes in cultural medium. HG incubation also elicited ceramide generation, LRs clustering and gp91phox colocalization to LRs clusters which were proved to mediate the HG induced O2.- formation and NO depletion in HUVEC. Functionally, the endothelium-dependent NO-mediated vasodilation in aorta was blunted substantially after HG incubation. Moreover, the HG-induced effect including ceramide production, LRs clustering, gp91phox colocalization to LRs clusters, O2.- formation and endothelial dysfunction could be blocked significantly by the inhibition of lysosome-membrane fusion. We propose that hyperglycaemia-induced endothelial impairment is closely related to the lysosome-membrane fusion and the following LRs clustering, LRs-NOX platforms formation and O2.- production

    The next widespread bamboo flowering poses a massive risk to the giant panda

    The IUCN Red List has downgraded several species from “endangered” to “vulnerable” that still have largely unknown extinction risks. We consider one of those downgraded species, the giant panda, a bamboo specialist. Massive bamboo flowering could be a natural disaster for giant pandas. Using scenario analysis, we explored possible impacts of the next bamboo flowering in the Qinling and Minshan Mountains that are home to most giant pandas. Our results showed that the Qinling Mountains could experience large-scale bamboo flowering leading to a high risk of widespread food shortages for the giant pandas by 2020. The Minshan Mountains could similarly experience a large-scale bamboo flowering with a high risk for giant pandas between 2020 and 2030 without suitable alternative habitat in the surrounding areas. These scenarios highlight thus-far unforeseen dangers of conserving giant pandas in a fragmented habitat. We recommend advance measures to protect giant panda from severe population crashes when flowering happens. This study also suggests the need to anticipate and manage long-term risks to other downgraded species
