Effects of different feeding methods on neuropeptide nesfatin-1 and irisin in turkeys
In this study, the effects of different methods of feeding turkeys on the neuropeptide nesfatin-1 and the hormone irisin were evaluated. A total of 90 turkeys were distributed to three treatment groups, namely T1: conventional system, T2: 50% feed and pasture, and T3: pasture. There were 30 birds in each group with three random replications. The birds were fed for 18 weeks. At the end of the study, blood was collected from 10 birds of each group. Plasma nesfatin-1 and irisin levels were measured with an enzyme-linked immunoassay. The nesfatin-1 levels of male turkeys in T1, T2, and T3 were 0.76 ± 0.1 ng/m, 0.41 ± 0.1 ng/ml, and 1.24 ± 0.2 ng/ml, respectively. Nesfatin-1 levels in the female turkeys in T1, T2 and T3 were 0.53 ± 0.07 ng/ml, 1.18 ± 0.3 ng/ml, 1.32 ± 0.1 ng/ml, respectively. The irisin levels in the male turkeys in T1, T2, and T3 were 575.93 ± 42.5 pg/ml, 188.39 ± 1.8 pg/ml, and 607.54 ± 24.1 pg/ml, respectively. Irisin levels of the female turkeys in T1, T2 and T3 were 603.20 ± 42.2 pg/ml, 241.42 ± 18.4 pg/ml, and 399.29 ± 21.5 pg/ml, respectively. Because nesfatin-1 is involved in regulating food intake, food intake by turkeys might differ, depending on the management system. Different management systems might also alter irisin secreation because it can be induced by exercise
Engaging children in meaningful charity: opening-up the spaces within which children learn to give
This paper presents qualitative evidence from an in-depth, participative action research project with 150 children aged 4-8 years old, exploring their experiences, perceptions and preferences regarding charitable giving. Most children positively engage in charitable giving through home, school and their community, however less than 20% are aware of the cause area they are being asked to support, and most have little decision-making in their giving. Children’s willingness to engage increases when they critically examine the cause area and are facilitated to lead on giving decisions, often resulting in increased and sustained efforts to support cause areas that matter to them
Factors affecting nutritional quality in terms of the fatty acid composition of Cyprinion macrostomus
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different factors (season, gender, location, total lipid, weight and length) on the fatty acid composition and nutritional quality of Cyprinion macrostomus. The results were evaluated through PERMANOVA, principal coordinates (PCO), and cluster analysis for similarity ranges. An analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) was performed on the distance matrix using multiple permutations within a significant fixed effect (p < 0.05). C18:1ω9, EPA and DHA were the most important fatty acids which had an effect on the nutritional quality in all the factor groups. Total lipid amount, season and length factors were the most influential on the fatty acid compositions of C. macrostomus. Summer and Spring were the best the periods for the good nutritional quality of C. macrostomus in terms of AI (Atherogenicity index), TI (Thrombogenicity index) and h/H (Σhypocholesterolemic/Σhypercholesterolemic fatty acid index). In addition, station, gender and weight had no effect on nutritional quality. The study indicated that C. macrostomus is a potential fish meat for human nutrition with high nutritional value in terms of fatty acid composition
Large-Scale Conformational Changes of Trypanosoma cruzi Proline Racemase Predicted by Accelerated Molecular Dynamics Simulation
Chagas' disease, caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi), is a life-threatening illness affecting 11–18 million people. Currently available treatments are limited, with unacceptable efficacy and safety profiles. Recent studies have revealed an essential T. cruzi proline racemase enzyme (TcPR) as an attractive candidate for improved chemotherapeutic intervention. Conformational changes associated with substrate binding to TcPR are believed to expose critical residues that elicit a host mitogenic B-cell response, a process contributing to parasite persistence and immune system evasion. Characterization of the conformational states of TcPR requires access to long-time-scale motions that are currently inaccessible by standard molecular dynamics simulations. Here we describe advanced accelerated molecular dynamics that extend the effective simulation time and capture large-scale motions of functional relevance. Conservation and fragment mapping analyses identified potential conformational epitopes located in the vicinity of newly identified transient binding pockets. The newly identified open TcPR conformations revealed by this study along with knowledge of the closed to open interconversion mechanism advances our understanding of TcPR function. The results and the strategy adopted in this work constitute an important step toward the rationalization of the molecular basis behind the mitogenic B-cell response of TcPR and provide new insights for future structure-based drug discovery
Ordered arrays of multiferroic epitaxial nanostructures
Epitaxial heterostructures combining ferroelectric (FE) and ferromagnetic (FiM) oxides are a possible route to explore coupling mechanisms between the two independent order parameters, polarization and magnetization of the component phases. We report on the fabrication and properties of arrays of hybrid epitaxial nanostructures of FiM NiFe2O4 (NFO) and FE PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 or PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3, with large range order and lateral dimensions from 200 nm to 1 micron
Control of magnetic anisotropy by orbital hybridization in (La0.67Sr0.33MnO3)n/(SrTiO3)n superlattice
The asymmetry of chemical nature at the hetero-structural interface offers an
unique opportunity to design desirable electronic structure by controlling
charge transfer and orbital hybridization across the interface. However, the
control of hetero-interface remains a daunting task. Here, we report the
modulation of interfacial coupling of (La0.67Sr0.33MnO3)n/(SrTiO3)n
superlattices by manipulating the periodic thickness with n unit cells of
SrTiO3 and n unit cells La0.67Sr0.33MnO3. The easy axis of magnetic anisotropy
rotates from in-plane (n = 10) to out-of-plane (n = 2) orientation at 150 K.
Transmission electron microscopy reveals enlarged tetragonal ratio > 1 with
breaking of volume conservation around the (La0.67Sr0.33MnO3)n/(SrTiO3)n
interface, and electronic charge transfer from Mn to Ti 3d orbitals across the
interface. Orbital hybridization accompanying the charge transfer results in
preferred occupancy of 3d3z2-r2 orbital at the interface, which induces a
stronger electronic hopping integral along the out-of-plane direction and
corresponding out-of-plane magnetic easy axis for n = 2. We demonstrate that
interfacial orbital hybridization in superlattices of strongly correlated
oxides may be a promising approach to tailor electronic and magnetic properties
in device applications
Acidente com material perfurocortante entre profissionais de enfermagem de um hospital universitário
Os riscos ocupacionais a que os profissionais da equipe de enfermagem estão sujeitos no desempenho de suasfunções são consideráveis. Assim estabeleceu-se como objetivo deste estudo analisar os acidentes perfurocortantesno período de 2002 a 2006, envolvendo a equipe de enfermagem de um hospital universitário, para compreender ocontexto em que ocorrem. A utilização destas informações pode ser ferramenta de prevenção. Estudo descritivo,retrospectivo quantitativo e qualitativo. Na análise quantitativa foi utilizada estatística descritiva e na qualitativao discurso do sujeito coletivo. Por meio das fichas de notificação do Núcleo de Vigilância Epidemiológica doHospital, foi possível identificar acidentes do gênero no período pesquisado. Entrevistas foram direcionadas àsvítimas de acidentes que tiveram como paciente-fonte portador de Síndrome da Imunodeficiência Adquirida/Vírus da Imunodeficiência Humana, hepatite B e C. Os achados demonstraram que ainda persiste um grau significativodo desconhecimento ou banalização dos acidentes entre profissionais da saúde
