Fatigue cracking in gamma titanium aluminide
Fatigue crack initiation and growth were examined in cast and HIP'ed \textgamma-TiAl 4522XD. It was found that fatigue crack growth rates were higher at 750\celsius than 400\celsius, but that was also higher. Temperature excursions between and 750\celsius during fatigue crack growth resulted in retardation of the crack growth rate, both on heating and cooling; however heating from 400 to 750\celsius at a that would then be below threshold did not result in complete crack arrest. It was also found that for notches ~mm in length and smaller, initiation from the microstructure could instead be observed at stresses similar to the material failure stress; a microstructural initiation site exists. Secondary cracking around borides could also be observed. A change from trans- to mixed trans-, inter- and intra-lamellar cracking could be observed where the estimated size of the crack tip plastic zone exceeded the colony size. Changes in fracture surface morphology could not be related to the temperature of fatigue crack growth, although this could be observed from the oxide scale colouration. Compressive pre-loading of a crack results in retardation of the crack, which could also be observed from the oxide
On the breaking of collinear factorization in QCD
We investigate the breakdown of collinear factorization for non-inclusive
observables in hadron-hadron collisions. For pure QCD processes, factorization
is violated at the three-loop level and it has a structure identical to that
encountered previously in the case of super-leading logarithms. In particular,
it is driven by the non-commutation of Coulomb/Glauber gluon exchanges with
other soft exchanges. Beyond QCD, factorization may be violated at the two-loop
level provided that the hard subprocess contains matrix element contributions

Automation of one-loop QCD corrections
We present the complete automation of the computation of one-loop QCD
corrections, including UV renormalization, to an arbitrary scattering process
in the Standard Model. This is achieved by embedding the OPP integrand
reduction technique, as implemented in CutTools, into the MadGraph framework.
By interfacing the tool so constructed, which we dub MadLoop, with MadFKS, the
fully automatic computation of any infrared-safe observable at the
next-to-leading order in QCD is attained. We demonstrate the flexibility and
the reach of our method by calculating the production rates for a variety of
processes at the 7 TeV LHC.Comment: 64 pages, 12 figures. Corrected the value of m_Z in table 1. In table

Massive amplitudes on the Coulomb branch of N=4 SYM
We initiate a systematic study of amplitudes with massive external particles
on the Coulomb-branch of N=4 super Yang Mills theory: 1) We propose that
(multi-)soft-scalar limits of massless amplitudes at the origin of moduli space
can be used to determine Coulomb-branch amplitudes to leading order in the
mass. This is demonstrated in numerous examples. 2) We find compact explicit
expressions for several towers of tree-level amplitudes, including scattering
of two massive W-bosons with any number of positive helicity gluons, valid for
all values of the mass. 3) We present the general structure of superamplitudes
on the Coulomb branch. For example, the n-point "MHV-band" superamplitude is
proportional to a Grassmann polynomial of mixed degree 4 to 12, which is
uniquely determined by supersymmetry. We find explicit tree-level
superamplitudes for this MHV band and for other simple sectors of the theory.
4) Dual conformal generators are constructed, and we explore the dual conformal
properties of the simplest massive amplitudes. Our compact expressions for
amplitudes and superamplitudes should be of both theoretical and
phenomenological interest; in particular the tree-level results carry over to
truncations of the theory with less supersymmetry.Comment: 29 pages, 1 figur
Scattering AMplitudes from Unitarity-based Reduction Algorithm at the Integrand-level
SAMURAI is a tool for the automated numerical evaluation of one-loop
corrections to any scattering amplitudes within the dimensional-regularization
scheme. It is based on the decomposition of the integrand according to the
OPP-approach, extended to accommodate an implementation of the generalized
d-dimensional unitarity-cuts technique, and uses a polynomial interpolation
exploiting the Discrete Fourier Transform. SAMURAI can process integrands
written either as numerator of Feynman diagrams or as product of tree-level
amplitudes. We discuss some applications, among which the 6- and 8-photon
scattering in QED, and the 6-quark scattering in QCD. SAMURAI has been
implemented as a Fortran90 library, publicly available, and it could be a
useful module for the systematic evaluation of the virtual corrections oriented
towards automating next-to-leading order calculations relevant for the LHC

NLO Higgs boson production plus one and two jets using the POWHEG BOX, MadGraph4 and MCFM
We present a next-to-leading order calculation of Higgs boson production plus
one and two jets via gluon fusion interfaced to shower Monte Carlo programs,
implemented according to the POWHEG method. For this implementation we have
used a new interface of the POWHEG BOX with MadGraph4, that generates the codes
for generic Born and real processes automatically. The virtual corrections have
been taken from the MCFM code. We carry out a simple phenomenological study of
our generators, comparing them among each other and with fixed next-to-leading

Precision Gauge Unification from Extra Yukawa Couplings
We investigate the impact of extra vector-like GUT multiplets on the
predicted value of the strong coupling. We find in particular that Yukawa
couplings between such extra multiplets and the MSSM Higgs doublets can resolve
the familiar two-loop discrepancy between the SUSY GUT prediction and the
measured value of alpha_3. Our analysis highlights the advantages of the
holomorphic scheme, where the perturbative running of gauge couplings is
saturated at one loop and further corrections are conveniently described in
terms of wavefunction renormalization factors. If the gauge couplings as well
as the extra Yukawas are of O(1) at the unification scale, the relevant
two-loop correction can be obtained analytically. However, the effect persists
also in the weakly-coupled domain, where possible non-perturbative corrections

Why do women not use antenatal services in low and middle income countries? A metasynthesis of qualitative studies
Background:
Almost 50% of women in low & middle income countries (LMIC’s) don’t receive adequate antenatal care. Women’s views can offer important insights into this problem. Qualitative studies exploring inadequate use of antenatal services have been undertaken in a range of countries, but the findings are not easily transferable. We aimed to inform the development of future antenatal care programmes through a synthesis of findings in all relevant qualitative studies.
Methods and Findings:
Using a pre-determined search strategy, we identified robust qualitative studies reporting on the views and experiences of women in LMIC’s who received inadequate antenatal care. We used meta-ethnographic techniques to generate themes and a line of argument synthesis. We derived policy relevant hypotheses from the findings.
We included 21 papers representing the views of more than 1230 women from 15 countries. Three key themes were identified: ‘Pregnancy as socially risky and physiologically healthy’; ‘Resource use and survival in conditions of extreme poverty’and ‘Not getting it right first time’. The line of argument synthesis describes a dissonance between programme design and cultural contexts that may restrict access and discourage return visits. We hypothesize that centralized, risk-focused antenatal care programmes may be at odds with the resources, beliefs and experiences of pregnant women who underuse antenatal services.
Conclusions:
Our findings suggest that there may be a mis-alignment between current antenatal provision and the social and cultural context of some women in LMIC’s. Antenatal care provision that is theoretically and contextually at odds with local contextual beliefs and experiences are likely to be underused, especially when attendance generates increased personal risks of lost family resource or physical danger during travel; when the promised care is not delivered due to resource constraints; and when women experience covert or overt abuse in care settings
Family Planning Decisions, Perceptions and Gender Dynamics among Couples in Mwanza, Tanzania: A Qualitative Study.
Contraceptive use is low in developing countries which are still largely driven by male dominated culture and patriarchal values. This study explored family planning (FP) decisions, perceptions and gender dynamics among couples in Mwanza region of Tanzania. Twelve focus group discussions and six in-depth interviews were used to collect information from married or cohabiting males and females aged 18-49. The participants were purposively selected. Qualitative methods were used to explore family planning decisions, perceptions and gender dynamics among couples. A guide with questions related to family planning perceptions, decisions and gender dynamics was used. The discussions and interviews were tape-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed manually and subjected to content analysis. Four themes emerged during the study. First, "risks and costs" which refer to the side effects of FP methods and the treatment of side -effects as well as the costs inherit in being labeled as an unfaithful spouse. Second, "male involvement" as men showed little interest in participating in family planning issues. However, the same men were mentioned as key decision-makers even on the number of children a couple should have and the child spacing of these children. Third, "gender relations and communication" as participants indicated that few women participated in decision-making on family planning and the number of children to have. Fourth, "urban-rural differences", life in rural favoring having more children than urban areas therefore, the value of children depended on the place of residence. Family Planning programs should adapt the promotion of communication as well as joint decision-making on FP among couples as a strategy aimed at enhancing FP use
Beyond the required LISA free-fall performance: new LISA pathfinder results down to 20  μHz
In the months since the publication of the first results, the noise performance of LISA Pathfinder has improved because of reduced Brownian noise due to the continued decrease in pressure around the test masses, from a better correction of noninertial effects, and from a better calibration of the electrostatic force actuation. In addition, the availability of numerous long noise measurement runs, during which no perturbation is purposely applied to the test masses, has allowed the measurement of noise with good statistics down to 20  μHz. The Letter presents the measured differential acceleration noise figure, which is at (1.74±0.05)  fm s^{-2}/sqrt[Hz] above 2 mHz and (6±1)×10  fm s^{-2}/sqrt[Hz] at 20  μHz, and discusses the physical sources for the measured noise. This performance provides an experimental benchmark demonstrating the ability to realize the low-frequency science potential of the LISA mission, recently selected by the European Space Agency
