The paper deals with the Coimbra Commentaries, a group of eight commentaries of Aristotle, published in the Portuguese town of Coimbra between 1592 and 1606, that knew a large editorial success through Europe. The reception of the Medieval philosopher Henry of Ghent is considered as a case-study but attention is also paid to geographical, cultural and scholarly humanistic conditions that helped the Commentaries to create their own philosophical style

Below ground interactions for sustainable cropping systems.

Key aspects of cropping systems are described in terms of their impacts on soil, water and air resources. The importance of microbial symbiotic relations with crop plants are briefly considered in the context of nutrient resource use efficiency and the resilience of plants to biotic and abiotic stress. It is argued that cropping systems need to include crops with fibrous root systems and legumes in the rotation to ensure sustainable use of resources. Three series of experiments are discussed that considered how the efficacy of rhizobia and indigenous arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi could be enhanced in sustainable cropping systems. Evidence is presented to demonstrate that there are potential benefits to crop production from improved management of soil resources through the adoption of reduced tillage practices coupled with suitable crop rotation and weed control

Nódulo tireoidiano e câncer diferenciado de tireoide: atualização do consenso brasileiro

Thyroid nodules are frequent findings, especially when sensitive imaging methods are used. Although thyroid cancer is relatively rare, its incidence is increasing, particularly in terms of small tumors, which have an uncertain clinical relevance. Most patients with differentiated thyroid cancer exhibit satisfactory clinical outcomes when treatment is appropriate, and their mortality rate is similar to that of the overall population. However, relapse occurs in a considerable fraction of these patients, and some patients stop responding to conventional treatment and eventually die from their disease. Therefore, the challenge is how to identify the individuals who require more aggressive disease management while sparing the majority of patients from unnecessary treatments and procedures. We have updated the Brazilian Consensus that was published in 2007, emphasizing the diagnostic and therapeutic advances that the participants, representing several Brazilian university centers, consider most relevant in clinical practice. The formulation of the present guidelines was based on the participants' experience and a review of the relevant literature.Nódulos tireoidianos são muito frequentes, sobretudo quando se empregam métodos sensíveis de imagem.

A Estratégia Da Aprendizagem Baseada Em Equipes Em Um Curso De Direito

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Hypercalcemia is well described in various granulomatous disorders, such as sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, berylliosis, leprosy and fungal infections. However, the association of <it>Paracoccidioides brasiliensis </it>and hypercalcemia is rare: to the best of our knowledge, only two cases have previously been reported, and neither had a clear documentation of the etiology of the hypercalcemia.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of a 22-year-old man in whom disseminated infection with paracoccidioidomycosis was associated with hypercalcemia. The patient had a high normal serum level of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D and a suppressed parathyroid hormone value, an indication that the hypercalcemia was not mediated by parathyroid hormone and might be associated with 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The episode resolved readily with administration of corticosteroids, an outcome suggesting that this is an effective treatment of hypercalcemia of this origin. On follow-up, while receiving antifungal therapy for <it>P. brasiliensis </it>the patient's calcium values remained normal.</p

Structural studies of Helicase NS3 variants from Hepatitis C virus genotype 3 in virological sustained responder and non-responder patients

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>About 130 million people are infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) worldwide, but effective treatment options are not yet available. One of the most promising targets for antiviral therapy is nonstructural protein 3 (NS3). To identify possible changes in the structure of NS3 associated with virological sustained response or non-response of patients, a model was constructed for each helicase NS3 protein coding sequence. From this, the goal was to verify the interaction between helicases variants and their ligands.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>Evidence was found that the NS3 helicase portion of non-responder patients contained substitutions in its ATP and RNA binding sites. K210E substitution can cause an imbalance in the distribution of loads, leading to a decrease in the number of ligations between the essential amino acids required for the hydrolysis of ATP. W501R substitution causes an imbalance in the distribution of loads, leading and forcing the RNA to interact with the amino acid Thr269, but not preventing binding of ribavirin inhibitor.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Useful information is provided on the genetic profiling of the HCV genotype 3, specifically the coding region of the NS3 protein, improving our understanding of the viral genome and the regions of its protein catalytic site.</p
