«Nem tudo se pode escrever». Correspondencia diplomática e información «política» en Portugal durante el siglo XVII

This article aims at assessing the role played by correspondence in the diplomatic milieu of the late 17th century. The first part of this essay presents several examples of letter exchange among Portuguese diplomats, in order to demonstrate the importance of correspondence for the diffusion of information, in particular data that had a “political” character. The second part of this article focuses on the ensemble of letters written by Juan Domingo Maserati, diplomat of Charles II of Spain, during his stay in Portugal in the decade of 1670. The in-depth study of this collection of letters shows, in a particularly clear way, how important the letters were as a means of diffusing information about Portuguese politics

Os povos indígenas, a dominação colonial e as instâncias de justiça na América Portuguesa e Espanhola

UID/HIS/04311/2019 UID/HIS/04666/2019Neste ensaio, o autor apresenta um panorama historiográfico dos estudos das duas últimas décadas dedicados aos povos indígenas e à pluralidade de respostas que estes deram à dominação colonial, com especial incidência no campo da justiça. Começando por explicitar o estatuto que os espanhóis e os portugueses impuseram aos povos indígenas que viveram nas áreas sob regime colonial, destacam-se os estudos sobre a resposta que foi dada por esses indígenas, a qual passou pela resistência armada, pela “resistência adaptativa” e, ainda, pelo recurso às instituições – jurídicas, e não só – dos colonizadores para lutar contra os abusos de que eram alvo. O conjunto de textos aqui apresentados mostra cabalmente que os índios, depois de 1492 e até ao final do período colonial, continuaram a ser sujeitos – por vezes muito ativos – do processo de formação da sociedade da América espanhola e portuguesa, e que foram, pelo menos em parte, produtores da sua própria história.publishersversionpublishe

The historiography dedicated to the government and administration of Brazil in the period 1580-1700 has recently experienced a very significant development. In addition to witnessing an interesting conceptual reconsideration, it has seen the formulation of a series of new interpretative models, as well as the exploration of new or understudied themes and fields.
