    A 43-Gbps Lithium Niobate Modulator Driver Module

    This paper describes the realization of a 43-Gbps Lithium Niobate modulator driver module. The NRZ driver module utilizes four stages of GaAs p-HEMT MMIC amplifiers integrated with an output level detector and feedback loop to provide thermal stability and external control of the output swing. The bias and loop control circuitry are contained in the housing on a PC board external to the sealed MIC section. The integrated module (50.8 x 73.4 x 9.5 mm 3) provides 6.0 Vp-p controllable single-ended output voltage while dissipating only 4 watt

    Aligning physical elements with persons' attitude: an approach using Rasch measurement theory

    Affective engineering uses mathematical models to convert the information obtained from persons' attitude to physical elements into an ergonomic design. However, applications in the domain have not in many cases met measurement assumptions. This paper proposes a novel approach based on Rasch measurement theory to overcome the problem. The research demonstrates that if data fit the model, further variables can be added to a scale. An empirical study was designed to determine the range of compliance where consumers could obtain an impression of a moisturizer cream when touching some product containers. Persons, variables and stimulus objects were parameterised independently on a linear continuum. The results showed that a calibrated scale preserves comparability although incorporating further variables

    Creation of Rydberg Polarons in a Bose Gas

    We report spectroscopic observation of Rydberg polarons in an atomic Bose gas. Polarons are created by excitation of Rydberg atoms as impurities in a strontium Bose-Einstein condensate. They are distinguished from previously studied polarons by macroscopic occupation of bound molecular states that arise from scattering of the weakly bound Rydberg electron from ground-state atoms. The absence of a pp-wave resonance in the low-energy electron-atom scattering in Sr introduces a universal behavior in the Rydberg spectral lineshape and in scaling of the spectral width (narrowing) with the Rydberg principal quantum number, nn. Spectral features are described with a functional determinant approach (FDA) that solves an extended Fr\"{o}hlich Hamiltonian for a mobile impurity in a Bose gas. Excited states of polyatomic Rydberg molecules (trimers, tetrameters, and pentamers) are experimentally resolved and accurately reproduced with FDA.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Theory of excitation of Rydberg polarons in an atomic quantum gas

    We present a quantum many-body description of the excitation spectrum of Rydberg polarons in a Bose gas. The many-body Hamiltonian is solved with functional determinant theory, and we extend this technique to describe Rydberg polarons of finite mass. Mean-field and classical descriptions of the spectrum are derived as approximations of the many-body theory.     Upwelling regime off the Cabo Frio region in Brazil and impact on acoustic propagation

    This work introduces a description of the complex upwelling regime off the Cabo Frio region in Brazil and shows that ocean modeling, based on the feature-oriented regional modeling system (FORMS) technique, can produce reliable predictions of sound speed fields for the corresponding shallow water environment. This work also shows, through the development of simulations, that the upwelling regime can be responsible for the creation of shadow coastal zones, in which the detection probability is too low for an acoustic source to be detected. The development of the FORMS technique and its validation with real data, for the particular region of coastal upwelling off Cabo Frio, reveals the possibility of a sustainable and reliable forecast system for the corresponding (variable in space and time) underwater acoustic environment.     A cadeia produtiva da maçã brasileira com a implementação da Produção Integrada de Maçã demonstrou suas preocupações com as necessidades apresentadas pelo mercado consumidor e, além disso, com essa implementação ratifica o papel de segmento pioneiro em inovação no agronegócio brasileiro. O estudo teve como objetivo descrever a implementação da Produção Integrada de Maçã, além de fazer um levantamento a partir das referências sobre inovação e das entrevistas com especialistas do setor se esta implementação pode ser considerada um processo de inovação interativo. Através das entrevistas realizadas com os especialistas da cadeia que participaram da implementação da Produção Integrada de Maçã, bem como de consulta a arquivos da EMBRAPA Uva e Vinho e da Associação Brasileira dos Produtores de Maçã é que este estudo foi efetivado. Após a análise da coleta de dados foi possível a identificação de que existe a presença dos passos descritos na literatura para a identificação da implementação da Produção Integrada de Maçã como um modelo interativo de inovação, cujo centro é a empresa, combinando interações com outra empresa, ou em um segmento entre as empresas individualmente e o sistema de ciência e tecnologia. Por fim, foi possível perceber também que a implementação da Produção Integrada de Maçã foi mais um exemplo de processo inovador realizado pela cadeia produtiva da maçã.SEMEAD

    Este estudo foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de realizar a descrição botânica de 11 linhagens de Cajanus cajan. Os principais descritores foram: hábito de crescimento, altura de plantas (cm), número de ramos, diâmetro do caule (mm), cor básica da flor, cor básica da vagem, cor das sementes, cor em volta do hilo das sementes, largura do hilo e forma das sementes. Os descritores utilizados mostraram-se suficientes para caracterizar as linhagens com características distintas, pelas quais podem ser facilmente identificadas

    Use of resistivity measurements to detect urban caves in Mexico City and to assess the related hazard

    International audienceIn the XIX century when Mexico City was much smaller than at present, there was non-regulated mining of building materials in a region of tuffs northwest of the city in an inhabited countryside. With the growth of the city during the XX century, this region was increasingly populated and in the 1970's many two-level bricks houses were built, without regard for underground caves created by the earlier extractions. Some ground sinkings in adjacent areas alarmed the residents who now are worried about this permanent hazard. An association of residents contracted a private company for a geophysical study in order to know the distribution of the caves. Resistivity measurements were taken in the area to detect the caves in order to alert city authorities. Resistivity data along most of the streets were collected with the array pole-dipole that consisted of three grounded electrodes. We performed 2-D dimensional inversions to the data in order to get a 2-D resistivity image of every street. This is similar to a resistivity cross-section of the ground but obtained from the inversion of pole-dipole and Schlumberger resistivity data simultaneously. Using the information of previous drills we modified our programming code in order to perform constrained inversion and to get more accurate resistivity models in agreement with the drills. From the resistivity models obtained for every street it was possible to produce a map which shows the horizontal distribution of the resistive bodies at a depth of 12m. These resistive bodies show coherent alignments that seem to correspond with a distributions of interconnected caves or tunnels used for extracting the sandy-tuffs. From these kind of interpretation method it was intended to get a more accurate horizontal distribution of the excavated areas in order to better know the urbanized area affected and lead the authorities to remedy the area with refill material
