The floral anatomy of two Peruvian species of the genus Larnax Miers (tribe Solaneae) is studied: L. lutea S. Leiva and L. parviflora N. W. Sawyer & S. Leiva, with emphasis on their floral vasculature. The obtained results are new at the generic level. Among the most important features for the genus, are mentioned the presence of an accrescent calyx, the stapet, and an ovarian nectary. These data are analyzed in the delimitation of Larnax with allied genera, reaching the conclusion that it is closer to Athenaea and Aureliana than is to Deprea, supporting the recent system proposed by Hunziker (2001).Fil: Cabrera, Mario Fernando. An industrial scale process for the enzymatic removal of steryl glucosides from biodiesel

    Get PDF
Background: Biodiesels produced from transesterification of vegetable oils have a major quality problem due to thepresence of precipitates, which need to be removed to avoid clogging of filters and engine failures. These precipitateshave been reported to be mostly composed of steryl glucosides (SGs), but so far industrial cost-effective methods toremove these compounds are not available. Here we describe a novel method for the efficient removal of SGs frombiodiesel, based on the hydrolytic activity of a thermostable β-glycosidase obtained from Thermococcus litoralis. Results: A steryl glucosidase (SGase) enzyme from T. litoralis was produced and purified from Escherichia coli culturesexpressing a synthetic gene, and used to treat soybean-derived biodiesel. Several optimization steps allowed for theselection of optimal reaction conditions to finally provide a simple and efficient process for the removal of SGs fromcrude biodiesel. The resulting biodiesel displayed filterability properties similar to distilled biodiesel according to thetotal contamination (TC), the cold soak filtration test (CSFT), filter blocking tendency (FBT), and cold soak filter blockingtendency (CSFBT) tests. The process was successfully scaled up to a 20 ton reactor, confirming its adaptability toindustrial settings. Conclusions: The results presented in this work provide a novel path for the removal of steryl glucosides from biodieselusing a cost-effective, environmentally friendly and scalable enzymatic process, contributing to the adoption ofthis renewable fuel.Fil: Peirú, Salvador. Changes in the juvenile fish assemblage of a Mediterranean shallow Posidonia oceanica seagrass nursery area after half a century

The within-year dynamics of the juvenile fish community in a shallow seagrass-dominated nursery habitat (Posidonia oceanica) in a Mediterranean bay were compared between two surveys separated by 50 years (1960 and 2012-2013). A nocturnal survey over depths ranging from 2 to 10 m over patchy seagrass meadows was conducted for one year (2012-2013) through 72 epibenthic tows spread fortnightly in 4 nearby stations, mimicking a survey conducted in 1960 in terms of sampling intensity, sampling zone, temporal coverage and sampling gear. Although a large proportion of the fish species were similar among surveys, remarkable and statistically significant differences were detected. A striking feature was that one of the most common and abundant Sparidae species currently, Diplodus annularis, did not appear in 1960. Other strong differences included the nonappearance of the European eel Anguilla anguilla in the recent survey. Furthermore, one of the most valuable species for artisanal fisheries in the area, the black scorpionfish Scorpaena porcus, was almost 10 times less abundant in 1960. A finer-scale study of the 2012-2013 survey allowed a quantitative analysis between species composition and potential environmental drivers through redundancy analysis that well described the current pattern of time-dependent recruitment pulses in nearshore meadows of the area throughout the year, with marked effects of surface temperature and photoperiod. The comparison between surveys suggests that some major differences between surveys are not likely to be attributable to interannual stochasticity in recruitment or environmental variability but may be related to i) unaccounted-for habitat transformation and/or ii) the strong decrease in juvenile fishing mortality in this shallow nursery area since the enforcement of bans on littoral epibenthic trawling activities characteristic of this area

The generalized QR factorization, also known as GQR factorization, is a method that simultaneously transforms two matrices A and B in a triangular form. In this paper, we show the application of GQR factorization in solving linear equality-constrained least square problems; in addition, we explain how to use GQR factorization for solving quaternion least-square problems through the matrix representation of quaternions.

A return to the "Rules of Thumb" in Maritime Engineering for digital native students

    Get PDF
Engineering and technical degrees are difficult to teach and, consequently, have always been characterized by a large number of academic failures. That is the reason why different methodologies have been applied to classes of similar content in different countries [1]. Among these methodologies, it is noteworthy to mention audio/visual resources as a useful tool to improve the teaching of coastal engineering [2], which means more students that pass the coastal engineering courses [3]. Moreover, use of GPS and Google Earth have also shown to be useful tools to improve the learning process [4]. Nevertheless, the authors have not found anything about the use of “rules of thumb” as a better way for students to improve their comprehension of the basic knowledge of an engineering subject. This paper shows the teaching experience on Maritime Engineering for undergraduate students of Civil Engineering in the School of Engineering at the University of Seville (Spain). The application of new information technologies in classrooms and advanced training in the use of finite element software tools and programming languages gives our students extremely powerful tools for solving very complex engineering problems with excellent results. However, the enormous effort invested by the students in acquiring this advanced knowledge and to be up to date in using and commanding on these technologies leads them to focus their main efforts, attention and skills just toward the numerical resolution of the problem, the efficiency of the implemented algorithm, and the programming language difficulties. This puts aside the essential and the critical sense of the accuracy of the results obtained by the algorithm. The students do not get the physical ‘feeling’ of what’s happening in the algorithm. We have included a teaching sequence in our lesson programs that always starts with an historical review of the different approaches used by engineers in their times in order to solve engineering problems from the seventeenth through the nineteenth century to today. This method makes the students to appreciate the importance and wits required by those men in the past in facing a difficult task when they didn’t have a PC or powerful software. The “rules of thumb” in engineering become a powerful tool for the digital native students which helps them make sense and enjoy the study and programming when they finally find out that their algorithm responds with reasonable accuracy and orders of magnitude to the result expected beforehand. Simply applying "rules of thumb" and well-known approximations of the past, perhaps obsolete from a technical point of view, will help the student learn the process. Some examples will be given in this paper in order to show the use of these “rules of thumb” or simplified models in class for teaching Maritime Engineering subject. Among them: the dimensionless stability number of Vicente Negro [5] for the design of the armour layer blocks in breakwaters, the Iribarren’s wave drawings [6], the US Army Corps of Engineers Shore Protection Manual Graphs and plates, etc
