    No full text
Diamond–SiC–Si composites have been prepared using gaseous silicon vacuum infiltration. The evolution of the phases and microstructures of the composites have been analyzed using X-ray diffraction technique and scanning electron microscopy. It has been found that the diamond–SiC–Si composite is composed of β-SiC, diamond, and residual Si. The diamond particles were distributed homogeneously in the dense matrix of the composites. Besides, the effects of particle size and content of diamond on the properties of diamond–SiC–Si composites have been analyzed. The thermal conductivity of the composites increases with particle size and content of diamond. When the particle size and content of diamond are 300 µm and 80 wt %, respectively, the thermal conductivity of the composites approaches the value of 280 W·m⁻¹·K⁻¹. Combined energy -- diffraction data refinement of decagonal AlNiCo

We incorporate realistic pair potential energies directly into a non-linear least-square fit of diffraction data to quantitatively compare structure models with experiment for the Ni-rich dd(AlNiCo) quasicrystal. The initial structure models are derived from a few {\it a priori} assumptions (gross features of the Patterson function) and the pair potentials. In place of the common hyperspace approach to the structure refinement of quasicrystals, we use a real-space tile decoration scheme, which does not rely on strict quasiperiodicity, and makes it easy to enforce sensible local arrangements of the atoms. Inclusion of the energies provides information complementary to the diffraction data and protects the fit procedure from converging on spurious solutions. The method pinpoints sites which are likely to break the symmetry of their local environment.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, proceedings of the Internation Conference on Quasicrystals, Bangalore, India, August 200

Hamiltonian Formalism of the de-Sitter Invariant Special Relativity

Lagrangian of the Einstein's special relativity with universal parameter cc (SRc\mathcal{SR}_c) is invariant under Poincar\'e transformation which preserves Lorentz metric ημν\eta_{\mu\nu}. The SRc\mathcal{SR}_c has been extended to be one which is invariant under de Sitter transformation that preserves so called Beltrami metric BμνB_{\mu\nu}. There are two universal parameters cc and RR in this Special Relativity (denote it as SRcR\mathcal{SR}_{cR}). The Lagrangian-Hamiltonian formulism of SRcR\mathcal{SR}_{cR} is formulated in this paper. The canonic energy, canonic momenta, and 10 Noether charges corresponding to the space-time's de Sitter symmetry are derived. The canonical quantization of the mechanics for SRcR\mathcal{SR}_{cR}-free particle is performed. The physics related to it is discussed.Comment: 24 pages, no figur

A security analysis of automated Chinese turing tests

Text-based Captchas have been widely used to deter misuse of services on the Internet. However, many designs have been broken. It is intellectually interesting and practically relevant to look for alternative designs, which are currently a topic of active research. We motivate the study of Chinese Captchas as an interesting alternative design - counterintuitively, it is possible to design Chinese Captchas that are universally usable, even to those who have never studied Chinese language. More importantly, we ask a fundamental question: is the segmentation-resistance principle established for Roman-character based Captchas applicable to Chinese based designs? With deep learning techniques, we offer the first evidence that computers do recognize individual Chinese characters well, regardless of distortion levels. This suggests that many real-world Chinese schemes are insecure, in contrast to common beliefs. Our result offers an essential guideline to the design of secure Chinese Captchas, and it is also applicable to Captchas using other large-alphabet languages such as Japanese

Analysis of community structure of a microbial consortium capable of degrading benzo(a)pyrene by DGGE

A microbial consortium was obtained by enrichment culture of sea water samples collected from Botan oil port in Xiamen, China, using the persistent high concentration of a mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons enrichment strategy. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) was used to investigate the bacterial composition and community dynamic changes based on PCR amplification of 16S rRNA genes during batch culture enrichment. Using the spray-plate method, three bacteria, designated as BL01, BL02 and BL03, which corresponded to the dominant bands in the DGGE profiles, were isolated from the consortium. Sequence analysis showed that BL01, BL02 and BL03 were phylogenetically close to Ochrobactrum sp., Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Pseudomonas fluorescens, respectively. The degradation of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), a model high-molecular-weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (HMW PAH) compound was investigated using individual isolates, a mixture of the three isolates, and the microbial consortium (BL) originally isolated from the oil port sea water. Results showed that the order of degradative ability was BL > the mixture of the three isolates > individual isolates. BL degraded 44.07% of the 10 ppm BaP after 14 days incubation, which showed the highest capability for HMW PAH compound degradation. Our results revealed that this high selective pressure strategy was feasible and effective in enriching the HMW PAH-degraders from the original sea water samples. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Solar Intranetwork Magnetic Elements: bipolar flux appearance

The current study aims to quantify characteristic features of bipolar flux appearance of solar intranetwork (IN) magnetic elements. To attack such a problem, we use the Narrow-band Filter Imager (NFI) magnetograms from the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) on board \emph{Hinode}; these data are from quiet and an enhanced network areas. Cluster emergence of mixed polarities and IN ephemeral regions (ERs) are the most conspicuous forms of bipolar flux appearance within the network. Each of the clusters is characterized by a few well-developed ERs that are partially or fully co-aligned in magnetic axis orientation. On average, the sampled IN ERs have total maximum unsigned flux of several 10^{17} Mx, separation of 3-4 arcsec, and a lifetime of 10-15 minutes. The smallest IN ERs have a maximum unsigned flux of several 10^{16} Mx, separations less than 1 arcsec, and lifetimes as short as 5 minutes. Most IN ERs exhibit a rotation of their magnetic axis of more than 10 degrees during flux emergence. Peculiar flux appearance, e.g., bipole shrinkage followed by growth or the reverse, is not unusual. A few examples show repeated shrinkage-growth or growth-shrinkage, like magnetic floats in the dynamic photosphere. The observed bipolar behavior seems to carry rich information on magneto-convection in the sub-photospheric layer.Comment: 26 pages, 14 figure

Evolution and Flare Activity of Delta-Sunspots in Cycle 23

The emergence and magnetic evolution of solar active regions (ARs) of beta-gamma-delta type, which are known to be highly flare-productive, were studied with the SOHO/MDI data in Cycle 23. We selected 31 ARs that can be observed from their birth phase, as unbiased samples for our study. From the analysis of the magnetic topology (twist and writhe), we obtained the following results. i) Emerging beta-gamma-delta ARs can be classified into three topological types as "quasi-beta", "writhed" and "top-to-top". ii) Among them, the "writhed" and "top-to-top" types tend to show high flare activity. iii) As the signs of twist and writhe agree with each other in most cases of the "writhed" type (12 cases out of 13), we propose a magnetic model in which the emerging flux regions in a beta-gamma-delta AR are not separated but united as a single structure below the solar surface. iv) Almost all the "writhed"-type ARs have downward knotted structures in the mid portion of the magnetic flux tube. This, we believe, is the essential property of beta-gamma-delta ARs. v) The flare activity of beta-gamma-delta ARs is highly correlated not only with the sunspot area but also with the magnetic complexity. vi) We suggest that there is a possible scaling-law between the flare index and the maximum umbral area

How to extract reliable core-volume fractions from core-shell polycrystalline microstructures using cross sectional TEM micrographs

    Get PDF
A reliable method of extracting core-volume fraction from TEM micrographs of core-shell polycrystalline microstructures is presented. Three commonly used averaging methods based on a simple spherical model are shown to consistently underestimate the core-volume fraction due to the interpretation of a 3D structure from a 2D slice. The same trend is also revealed using Voronoi tessellated structures to mimic polycrystalline ceramics. In some cases the underestimate is less than half the true core-volume fraction. We show that using a new maximum core-volume fraction methodology can improve the extracted value to a consistent error of less than 5%. This approach uses a value taken from the largest core-volume fraction measured from 10 grains that exhibit a core-shell microstructure. This provides increasing accuracy and improvements in the confidence of the measurement when extracting core-volume fractions of polycrystalline ceramics from 2D TEM micrographs

Total-energy-based prediction of a quasicrystal structure

Quasicrystals are metal alloys whose noncrystallographic symmetry and lack of structural periodicity challenge methods of experimental structure determination. Here we employ quantum-based total-energy calculations to predict the structure of a decagonal quasicrystal from first principles considerations. We employ Monte Carlo simulations, taking as input the knowledge that a decagonal phase occurs in Al-Ni-Co near a given composition, and using a few features of the experimental Patterson function. The resulting structure obeys a nearly deterministic decoration of tiles on a hierarchy of length scales related by powers of τ\tau, the golden mean.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
