chronic urticaria is usually associated with fibromyalgia syndrome
Although the pathophysiology of chronic urticaria is not fully understood, it is possible that dysfunctioning of peripheral cutaneous nerve fibres may be involved. It has also been suggested that fibromyalgia syndrome, a multi-symptomatic chronic pain condition, may be associated with alterations and dysfunctioning of peripheral cutaneous nerve fibres. The aim of this study was to determine whether patients with chronic urticaria are also affected by fibromyalgia syndrome. A total of 126 patients with chronic urticaria were investigated for fibromyalgia syndrome. An unexpectedly high proportion (over 70%) had fibromyalgia syndrome. The corresponding proportion for 50 control dermatological patients was 16%, which is higher than previously published data for the Italian general population (2.2%). It is possible that dysfunctional cutaneous nerve fibres of patients with fibromyalgia syndrome may release neuropeptides, which, in turn, may induce dermal microvessel dilatation and plasma extravasation. Furthermore, some neuropeptides may favour mast cell degranulation, which stimulates nerve endings, thus providing positive feedback. Chronic urticaria may thus be viewed in many patients, as a consequence of fibromyalgia syndrome. Speculatively, skin neuropathy (fibromyalgia syndrome) may trigger neurogenic skin inflammation (chronic urticaria)
Ground Arthropod Abundance in Switchgrass and Diverse Prairie Agroenergy Crops
The University of Northern Iowa’s Tallgrass Prairie Center converted corn and soybean fields in the Cedar River Natural Resource Area to four mixes of perennial tallgrass prairie species. Research plots were randomly seeded with one of four treatments of native prairie vegetation including a switchgrass monoculture and a 32-species prairie mix. We studied ground arthropod abundance in Switchgrass and the 32-species prairie mix at various distances from the nearest woody edge using pitfall traps. We hypothesized that a 32-species Prairie mix would support greater numbers of ground arthropods than a Switchgrass monoculture and that ground arthropod abundance would be greater in traps set closer to a woody edge. Our results indicated little difference in arthropod abundance between the Switchgrass and Prairie plots. Arachnid captures were greater nearer to a woody edge, but catch rates of other arthropods studied did not vary with distance from a woody edge
On-Off Intermittency in Time Series of Spontaneous Paroxysmal Activity in Rats with Genetic Absence Epilepsy
Dynamic behavior of complex neuronal ensembles is a topic comprising a
streamline of current researches worldwide. In this article we study the
behavior manifested by epileptic brain, in the case of spontaneous
non-convulsive paroxysmal activity. For this purpose we analyzed archived
long-term recording of paroxysmal activity in animals genetically susceptible
to absence epilepsy, namely WAG/Rij rats. We first report that the brain
activity alternated between normal states and epilepsy paroxysms is the on-off
intermittency phenomenon which has been observed and studied earlier in the

Grassland Bird Nest Survival in Perennial Agroenergy Crops
Previous research had been done in 2011 and 2012 regarding bird nest survival rates in the Cedar River Natural Resource Area in Washburn, IA. Further analysis of bird nest survival rates was done in this study to research how nest age, calendar date, soil type, and vegetation type influence the success or failure of these nests. New nests were identified in the prairie plots of the Cedar River Natural Resource Area and added to the previous sample size from the original study. A sample size of 97 bird nests total and 67 Dickcissel nests –SPAM (Spiza Americana) were used. The new nests were checked every 3-4 days and a fail or success was noted. The data was then analyzed using R statistical analysis to calculate correct logistic exposure models. The results for all nests showed that success was influenced by the nest age. A new nest had a 10% lower chance of success than an older nest. For all nests, the calendar date with which the nest was laid also influenced the successfulness. Nests laid in early may had a higher chance of surviving than nests laid in late season. Soil type and vegetation effects differed from all nests and the Dickcissel nest samples. However, for both sample sizes there was a much higher chance of success in 2011 than 2012 with the nests in the biomass vegetation mix having a better chance of survival than only grass
Treatment with human growth hormone in patients with Prader-Labhart-Willi syndrome reduces body fat and increases muscle mass and physical performance
Twelve children with documented Prader-Labhart-Willi syndrome were treated with human growth hormone (24 U/m2/week) during 1 year. The children were divided into three groups: group 1: overweight and prepubertal (n = 6, age 3.8-7.0 years); group 2: underweight and prepubertal (n = 3, age 0.6-4.1 years); group 3: pubertal (n = 3, age 9.2-14.6 years). In group 1, height increased from -1.7 SD to -0.6 SD, while weight decreased from 1.1 SD to 0.4 SD, with a dramatic drop in weight for height from 3.8 SD to 1.2 SD. Hand length increased from -1.5 SD to -0.4 SD and foot length from -2.5 SD to -1.4 SD. Body fat, measured by dual X-ray energy absorptiometry, dropped by a third, whereas muscle mass increased by a fourth. Physical capability (Wingate test) improved considerably. The children were reported to be much more active and capable. In group 2, similar changes were seen, but weight for height increased, probably because muscle mass increase exceeded fat mass decrease. Changes in group 3 were similar as in group 1, even though far less distinct. Conclusion: Growth hormone treatment in Prader-Labhart-Willi syndrome led to dramatic changes: distinct increase in growth velocity, height and muscle mass, as well as an improvement in physical performance. Double down on remote sensing for biodiversity estimation. A biological mindset
In the light of unprecedented planetary changes in biodiversity, real-time and accurate ecosystem and biodiversity assessments are becoming increasingly essential for informing policy and sustainable development. Biodiversity monitoring is a challenge, especially for large areas such as entire continents. Nowadays, spaceborne and airborne sensors provide information that incorporate wavelengths that cannot be seen nor imagined with the human eye. This is also now accomplished at unprecedented spatial resolutions, defined by the pixel size of images, achieving less than a meter for some satellite images and just millimeters for airborne imagery. Thanks to different modeling techniques, it is now possible to study functional diversity changes over different spatial and temporal scales. At the heart of this unifying framework are the “spectral species”—sets of pixels with a similar spectral signal—and their variability over space. The aim of this paper is to summarize the power of remote sensing for directly estimating plant species diversity, particularly focusing on the spectral species concept
Time-lapsing biodiversity: an open source method for measuring diversity changes by remote sensing
Understanding biodiversity changes in time is crucial to promptly provide management practices against diversity loss. This is overall true when considering global scales, since human-induced global change is expected to make significant changes on the Earth's biota. Biodiversity management and planning is mainly based on field observations related to community diversity, considering different taxa. However, such methods are time and cost demanding and do not allow in most cases to get temporal replicates. In this view, remote sensing can provide a wide data coverage in a short period of time. Recently, the use of Rao's Q diversity as a measure of spectral diversity has been proposed in order to explicitly take into account differences in a neighbourhood considering abundance and relative distance among pixels. The aim of this paper was to extend such a measure over the temporal dimension and to present an innovative approach to calculate remotely sensed temporal diversity. We demonstrated that temporal beta-diversity (spectral turnover) can be calculated pixel-wise in terms of both slope and coefficient of variation and further plotted over the whole matrix / image. From an ecological and operational point of view, for prioritisation practices in biodiversity protection, temporal variability could be beneficial in order to plan more efficient conservation practices starting from spectral diversity hotspots in space and time. In this paper, we delivered a highly reproducible approach to calculate spatio-temporal diversity in a robust and straightforward manner. Since it is based on open source code, we expect that our method will be further used by several researchers and landscape managers
Comparative evaluation of the new xTAG GPP multiplex assay in the laboratory diagnosis of acute gastroenteritis. Clinical assessment and potential application from a multicentre Italian study.
Objective: Gastroenteritis caused by a single pathogen or multiple pathogens remains a major diagnostic challenge for the laboratory. The treatment of diarrhoea is based on microbiological results. Diagnosis is achieved using different laboratory techniques that have variable sensitivity and specificity. xTAG GPP is a new multiplex PCR assay that simultaneously detects 15 different pathogens responsible for diarrhoea. The results of the first multicentre study in Italy to evaluate the potential clinical application of the GPP assay in the laboratory diagnosis of diarrhoea are reported here.
Methods: Faeces specimens (N = 664) from hospitalized patients were tested with the GPP assay using a Luminex 200 instrument. All specimens were run using comparator methods following a routine algorithm: culture for bacteria, enzyme immunoassay and PCR for viruses, and microscopy for parasites.
Results: Of the samples tested with the GPP, 53.61% (356/664) gave positive results, as compared to 45.33% by routine testing. Of the positive specimens, 34.55% showed the presence of genomic DNA from multiple pathogens. The Luminex method showed an increase in the percentage of positivity of 8.28%.
Conclusions: The GPP assay can be considered a helpful tool for the detection of gastrointestinal pathogens, with a hands-on time of 5 h; it provides accurate data for the clinical management of hospitalized patients and for epidemiological surveillance
Coherent states on spheres
We describe a family of coherent states and an associated resolution of the
identity for a quantum particle whose classical configuration space is the
d-dimensional sphere S^d. The coherent states are labeled by points in the
associated phase space T*(S^d). These coherent states are NOT of Perelomov type
but rather are constructed as the eigenvectors of suitably defined annihilation
operators. We describe as well the Segal-Bargmann representation for the
system, the associated unitary Segal-Bargmann transform, and a natural
inversion formula. Although many of these results are in principle special
cases of the results of B. Hall and M. Stenzel, we give here a substantially
different description based on ideas of T. Thiemann and of K. Kowalski and J.
Rembielinski. All of these results can be generalized to a system whose
configuration space is an arbitrary compact symmetric space. We focus on the
sphere case in order to be able to carry out the calculations in a
