Parameterized Compilation Lower Bounds for Restricted CNF-formulas
We show unconditional parameterized lower bounds in the area of knowledge
compilation, more specifically on the size of circuits in decomposable negation
normal form (DNNF) that encode CNF-formulas restricted by several graph width
measures. In particular, we show that
- there are CNF formulas of size and modular incidence treewidth
whose smallest DNNF-encoding has size , and
- there are CNF formulas of size and incidence neighborhood diversity
whose smallest DNNF-encoding has size .
These results complement recent upper bounds for compiling CNF into DNNF and
strengthen---quantitatively and qualitatively---known conditional low\-er
bounds for cliquewidth. Moreover, they show that, unlike for many graph
problems, the parameters considered here behave significantly differently from
treewidth
Multiplicative processes and power laws
[Takayasu et al., Phys. Rev.Lett. 79, 966 (1997)] revisited the question of
stochastic processes with multiplicative noise, which have been studied in
several different contexts over the past decades. We focus on the regime, found
for a generic set of control parameters, in which stochastic processes with
multiplicative noise produce intermittency of a special kind, characterized by
a power law probability density distribution. We briefly explain the physical
mechanism leading to a power law pdf and provide a list of references for these
results dating back from a quarter of century. We explain how the formulation
in terms of the characteristic function developed by Takayasu et al. can be
extended to exponents , which explains the ``reason of the lucky
coincidence''. The multidimensional generalization of (\ref{eq1}) and the
available results are briefly summarized. The discovery of stretched
exponential tails in the presence of the cut-off introduced in \cite{Taka} is

Advantages of continuous genotype values over genotype classes for GWAS in higher polyploids: a comparative study in hexaploid chrysanthemum
Background: Association studies are an essential part of modern plant breeding, but are limited for polyploid crops. The increased number of possible genotype classes complicates the differentiation between them. Available methods are limited with respect to the ploidy level or data producing technologies. While genotype classification is an established noise reduction step in diploids, it gains complexity with increasing ploidy levels. Eventually, the errors produced by misclassifications exceed the benefits of genotype classes. Alternatively, continuous genotype values can be used for association analysis in higher polyploids. We associated continuous genotypes to three different traits and compared the results to the output of the genotype caller SuperMASSA. Linear, Bayesian and partial least squares regression were applied, to determine if the use of continuous genotypes is limited to a specific method. A disease, a flowering and a growth trait with h(2) of 0.51, 0.78 and 0.91 were associated with a hexaploid chrysanthemum genotypes. The data set consisted of 55,825 probes and 228 samples. Results: We were able to detect associating probes using continuous genotypes for multiple traits, using different regression methods. The identified probe sets were overlapping, but not identical between the methods. Baysian regression was the most restrictive method, resulting in ten probes for one trait and none for the others. Linear and partial least squares regression led to numerous associating probes. Association based on genotype classes resulted in similar values, but missed several significant probes. A simulation study was used to successfully validate the number of associating markers. Conclusions: Association of various phenotypic traits with continuous genotypes is successful with both uni- and multivariate regression methods. Genotype calling does not improve the association and shows no advantages in this study. Instead, use of continuous genotypes simplifies the analysis, saves computational time and results more potential markers
Beyond Fossils. Envisioning desired futures for two sustainable energy islands in the Dutch delta region
This book is the concrete product of an academic exercise: the Master’s course ‘Designing and Planning Sustainable Energy Islands Atelier.’ It is the condensed result of three months’ work by six teachers and sixty students from the disciplines of landscape architecture, spatial planning and cultural geography at Wageningen University. These people spent three months considering the matter of a sustainable energy future for Goeree-Overflakkee and Schouwen-Duiveland. They focused on the following four landscape types that are found on the islands: • The coastal landscape • The agricultural landscape • The recreati onal landscape • The urban landscape They envisioned a future in which enough renewable energy is generated to fulfi l at least the need of the island’s residents in a sustainable way
Unscheduled return visits to a Dutch inner-city emergency department
© 2014, van der Linden et al.; licensee Springer. Background: Unscheduled return visits to the emergency department (ED) may reflect shortcomings in care. This study characterized ED return visits with respect to incidence, risk factors, reasons and post-ED disposition. We hypothesized that risk factors for unscheduled return and reasons for returning would differ from previous studies, due to differences in health care systems. Methods: All unscheduled return visits occurring within 1 week and related to the initial ED visit were selected. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to determine independent factors associated with unscheduled return, using patient information available at the initial visit. Reasons for returning unscheduled were categorized into illness-, patient- or physician-related. Post-ED disposition was compared between patients with unscheduled return visits and the patients who did not return. Results: Five percent (n = 2,492) of total ED visits (n = 49,341) were unscheduled return visits. Patients with an urgent triage level, patients presenting during the night shift, with a wound or local infection, abdominal pain or urinary problems were more likely to return unscheduled. Reasons to revisit unscheduled were mostly illness-related (49%) or patient-related (41%). Admission rates for returning patients (16%) were the same as for the patients who did not return (17%). Conclusions: Apart from abdominal complaints, risk factors for unscheduled return differ from previous studies. Short-term follow-up at the outpatient clinic or general practitioner for patients with urgent triage levels and suffering from wounds or local infections, abdominal pain or urinary problem might prevent unscheduled return
Extreme value distributions and Renormalization Group
In the classical theorems of extreme value theory the limits of suitably
rescaled maxima of sequences of independent, identically distributed random
variables are studied. So far, only affine rescalings have been considered. We
show, however, that more general rescalings are natural and lead to new limit
distributions, apart from the Gumbel, Weibull, and Fr\'echet families. The
problem is approached using the language of Renormalization Group
transformations in the space of probability densities. The limit distributions
are fixed points of the transformation and the study of the differential around
them allows a local analysis of the domains of attraction and the computation
