Binary properties of CH and Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor stars
The HERMES spectrograph installed on the 1.2-m Mercator telescope has been
used to monitor the radial velocity of 13 low-metallicity carbon stars, among
which 7 Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) stars and 6 CH stars. All stars but
one show clear evidence for binarity. New orbits are obtained for 8 systems.
The sample covers an extended range in orbital periods, extending from 3.4 d
(for the dwarf carbon star HE 0024-2523) to about 54 yr (for the CH star HD 26,
the longest known among barium, CH and extrinsic S stars). Three systems
exhibit low-amplitude velocity variations with periods close to 1 yr
superimposed on a long-term trend. In the absence of an accurate photometric
monitoring of these systems, it is not clear yet whether these variations are
the signature of a very low-mass companion, or of regular envelope pulsations.
The period - eccentricity (P - e) diagram for the 40 low-metallicity carbon
stars with orbits now available shows no difference between CH and CEMP-s stars
(the latter corresponding to those CEMP stars enriched in s-process elements,
as are CH stars). We suggest that they must be considered as one and the same
family and that their different names only stem from historical reasons.
Indeed, these two families have as well very similar mass-function
distributions, corresponding to companions with masses in the range 0.5 - 0.7
Msun, indicative of white-dwarf companions, adopting 0.8 - 0.9 Msun for the
primary component. This result confirms that CH and CEMP-s stars obey the same
mass-transfer scenario as their higher-metallicity analogs, the barium stars.
The P - e diagrams of barium, CH and CEMP-s stars are indeed very similar. They
reveal two different groups of systems: one with short orbital periods (P <
1000 d) and mostly circular or almost circular orbits, and another with
longer-period and eccentric (e > 0.1) orbits.Comment: Accepted in Astronomy & Astrophysic
Discretely Conservative Finite-Difference Formulations for Nonlinear Conservation Laws in Split Form: Theory and Boundary Conditions
Simulations of nonlinear conservation laws that admit discontinuous solutions are typically restricted to discretizations of equations that are explicitly written in divergence form. This restriction is, however, unnecessary. Herein, linear combinations of divergence and product rule forms that have been discretized using diagonal-norm skew-symmetric summation-by-parts (SBP) operators, are shown to satisfy the sufficient conditions of the Lax-Wendroff theorem and thus are appropriate for simulations of discontinuous physical phenomena. Furthermore, special treatments are not required at the points that are near physical boundaries (i.e., discrete conservation is achieved throughout the entire computational domain, including the boundaries). Examples are presented of a fourth-order, SBP finite-difference operator with second-order boundary closures. Sixth- and eighth-order constructions are derived, and included in E. Narrow-stencil difference operators for linear viscous terms are also derived; these guarantee the conservative form of the combined operator
Food web structure and community composition : a comparison across space and time in the North Sea
Ecological communities are constantly changing as a response to environmental and anthropogenic pressures. Yet, how changes in community composition influence the structure of food webs over time and space remains elusive. Using ecological network analysis, we assessed how food web structure changed across six distinct areas of the North Sea over a sixteen-year time-period. We used multivariate analyses to disentangle and compare spatio-temporal dynamics in community composition (i.e. changes in species abundances) and food web structure (i.e. changes in network properties). Specifically, we assessed how changes in community composition were reflected in food web structure. Our results revealed a strong spatial coupling between community composition and food web structure along a south-north gradient. However, the temporal covariation between community composition and food web structure depended on the spatial scale. We observed a temporal mismatch at regional scale, but a strong coupling at local scale. In particular, we found that community composition can be influenced by hydro-climatic events over large areas, with diverse effects manifesting in local food web structure. Our proposed methodological framework quantified and compared spatio-temporal changes in community composition and food web structure, providing key information to support effective management strategies aimed at conserving the structure and functioning of ecological communities in times of environmental change.Peer reviewe
The discontinuous nature of chromospheric activity evolution
Chromospheric activity has been thought to decay smoothly with time and,
hence, to be a viable age indicator. Measurements in solar type stars in open
clusters seem to point to a different conclusion: chromospheric activity
undergoes a fast transition from Hyades level to that of the Sun after about 1
Gyr of main--sequence lifetime and any decaying trend before or after this

WIYN Open Cluster Study. XXVI. Improved kinematic membership and spectroscopy of IC 2391
[Abridged] Contex. Young open clusters provide important clues to the
interface between the main sequence and pre-main-sequence phases of stellar
evolution. The young and nearby open cluster IC 2391 is well-suited to studies
of these two evolutionary phases. Aims. We establish a bona fide set of cluster
members and then analyze this set in terms of binary frequency, projected
rotational velocities, [Fe/H], and lithium abundance. In the wake of the
Hipparcos distance controversy for the Pleiades, we compare the main-sequence
fitting distance modulus to the Hipparcos mean parallax for IC 2391. Results.
The proper-motion survey covers a 6 times larger sky area than the prior
targeted searches for cluster members in IC 2391. A total of 66 stars are
considered bona fide cluster members down to a mass equivalent to 0.5M_sun. A
quarter of them have been newly identified with many in the F2-K5 spectral
range, which is crucial for a main-sequence fit. We find a mean [Fe/H] value of
+0.06+/-0.06, when a solar abundance of log epsilon (Fe)=7.45 is adopted. The
main sequence fitting yields a distance modulus that is 0.19 mag larger than
that derived from Hipparcos parallaxes; thus this offset nearly has the size of
a similar offset found for the Pleiades. The Li abundance pattern is similar to

Impact of 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns on particulate air pollution across Europe
To fight against the first wave of coronavirus disease 2019
(COVID-19) in 2020, lockdown measures were implemented in most European
countries. These lockdowns had well-documented effects on human mobility. We
assessed the impact of the lockdown implementation and relaxation on air
pollution by comparing daily particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide
(NO2) and ozone (O3) concentrations, as well as particle number
size distributions (PNSDs) and particle light absorption coefficient in situ
measurement data, with values that would have been expected if no COVID-19 epidemic had occurred
at 28 sites across Europe for the period 17 February–31 May 2020.
Expected PM, NO2 and O3 concentrations were calculated from the
2020 Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) ensemble forecasts,
combined with 2019 CAMS ensemble forecasts and measurement data. On average,
lockdown implementations did not lead to a decrease in PM2.5 mass
concentrations at urban sites, while relaxations resulted in a +26 ± 21 % rebound. The impacts of lockdown implementation and relaxation on
NO2 concentrations were more consistent (−29 ± 17 and +31 ± 30 %, respectively). The implementation of the lockdown measures
also induced statistically significant increases in O3 concentrations
at half of all sites (+13 % on average). An enhanced oxidising capacity
of the atmosphere could have boosted the production of secondary aerosol at
those places. By comparison with 2017–2019 measurement data, a
significant change in the relative contributions of wood and fossil fuel
burning to the concentration of black carbon during the lockdown was
detected at 7 out of 14 sites. The contribution of particles smaller than 70 nm to the total number of particles significantly also changed at most of
the urban sites, with a mean decrease of −7 ± 5 % coinciding with
the lockdown implementation. Our study shows that the response of PM2.5
and PM10 mass concentrations to lockdown measures was not systematic at
various sites across Europe for multiple reasons, the relationship between
road traffic intensity and particulate air pollution being more complex than
expected.</p
Multilateral Environmental Agreements and Trade Obligations: A Theoretical Analysis of the Doha Proposal
The Doha declaration on trade and environment proposed to clarify the relationship between multilateral environmental agreement (MEA) trade obligations and WTO rules by only guaranteeing economic integration upon ratification of certain MEAs. In other words, it pushed to authorize the use of trade measures against non-compliance, denying a non-signatory of its WTO rights to exercise countervailing tariffs. This paper demonstrates that the Doha proposal can be effective when environmental policy and its trade obligations are endogenous. Under plausible circumstances, ratification by a non-signatory to the MEA along with free trade as a reward is the unique equilibrium outcome. Delocation to pollution havens does not occur, as optimal tariffs are positive if standards are not adopted. Tariffs however only work as a credible threat and do not emerge in equilibrium. Results are consistent with broad empirical evidence that opposes the pollution haven hypothesis and suggests capital movements to be non-pollution related
