The Effects of Interlocking a Universal Hip Cementless Stem on Implant Subsidence and Mechanical Properties of Cadaveric Canine Femora.
ObjectiveTo determine if an interlocking bolt would limit subsidence of the biological fixation universal hip (BFX(®)) femoral stem under cyclic loading and enhance construct stiffness, yield, and failure properties.Study designEx vivo biomechanical study.AnimalsCadaveric canine femora (10 pairs).MethodsPaired femora implanted with a traditional stem or an interlocking stem (constructs) were cyclically loaded at walk, trot, and gallop loads while implant and bone motions were captured using kinematic markers and high-speed video. Constructs were then loaded to failure to evaluate failure mechanical properties.ResultsImplant subsidence was greater (P = .037) for the traditional implant (4.19 mm) than the interlocking implant (0.78 mm) only after gallop cyclic loading, and cumulatively after walk, trot, and gallop cyclic loads (5.20 mm vs. 1.28 mm, P = .038). Yield and failure loads were greater (P = .029 and .002, respectively) for the interlocking stem construct (1155 N and 2337 N) than the traditional stem construct (816 N and 1405 N). Version angle change after cyclic loading was greater (P = .020) for the traditional implant (3.89 degrees) than for the interlocking implant (0.16 degrees), whereas stem varus displacement at failure was greater (P = .008) for the interlocking implant (1.5 degrees) than the traditional implant (0.17 degrees).ConclusionAddition of a stabilizing bolt enhanced construct stability and limited subsidence of a BFX(®) femoral stem. Use of the interlocking implant may decrease postoperative subsidence. However, in vivo effects of the interlocking bolt on osseointegration, bone remodeling, and stress shielding are unknown
Anomalous Electron Transport in Field-Effect Transistors with Titanium Ditelluride Semimetal Thin-Film Channels
We report on "graphene-like" mechanical exfoliation of thin films of titanium
ditelluride and investigation of their electronic properties. The exfoliated
crystalline TiTe2 films were used as the channel layers in the back-gated
field-effect transistors fabricated with Ti/Al/Au metal contacts on SiO2/Si
substrates. The room-temperature current-voltage characteristics revealed
strongly non-linear behavior with signatures of the source-drain threshold
voltage similar to those observed in the charge-density-wave devices. The
drain-current showed an unusual non-monotonic dependence on the gate bias
characterized by the presence of multiple peaks. The obtained results can be
potentially used for implementation of the non-Boolean logic gates.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Isobaric multiplet yrast energies and isospin non-conserving forces
The isovector and isotensor energy differences between yrast states of
isobaric multiplets in the lower half of the region are quantitatively
reproduced in a shell model context. The isospin non-conserving nuclear
interactions are found to be at least as important as the Coulomb potential.
Their isovector and isotensor channels are dominated by J=2 and J=0 pairing
terms, respectively. The results are sensitive to the radii of the states,
whose evolution along the yrast band can be accurately followed.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Superseeds second part of nucl-th/010404
Homogenization and enhancement for the G-equation
We consider the so-called G-equation, a level set Hamilton-Jacobi equation,
used as a sharp interface model for flame propagation, perturbed by an
oscillatory advection in a spatio-temporal periodic environment. Assuming that
the advection has suitably small spatial divergence, we prove that, as the size
of the oscillations diminishes, the solutions homogenize (average out) and
converge to the solution of an effective anisotropic first-order
(spatio-temporal homogeneous) level set equation. Moreover we obtain a rate of
convergence and show that, under certain conditions, the averaging enhances the
velocity of the underlying front. We also prove that, at scale one, the level
sets of the solutions of the oscillatory problem converge, at long times, to
the Wulff shape associated with the effective Hamiltonian. Finally we also
consider advection depending on position at the integral scale
Attachment styles and personal growth following romantic breakups: The mediating roles of distress, rumination, and tendency to rebound

This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited. This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund. The purpose of this research was to examine the associations of attachment anxiety and avoidance with personal growth following relationship dissolution, and to test breakup distress, rumination, and tendency to rebound with new partners as mediators of these associations. Study 1 (N = 411) and Study 2 (N = 465) measured attachment style, breakup distress, and personal growth; Study 2 additionally measured ruminative reflection, brooding, and proclivity to rebound with new partners. Structural equation modelling revealed in both studies that anxiety was indirectly associated with greater personal growth through heightened breakup distress, whereas avoidance was indirectly associated with lower personal growth through inhibited breakup distress. Study 2 further showed that the positive association of breakup distress with personal growth was accounted for by enhanced reflection and brooding, and that anxious individuals’ greater personal growth was also explained by their proclivity to rebound. These findings suggest that anxious individuals’ hyperactivated breakup distress may act as a catalyst for personal growth by promoting the cognitive processing of breakup-related thoughts and emotions, whereas avoidant individuals’ deactivated distress may inhibit personal growth by suppressing this cognitive work
Effects of stressor controllability on psychophysiological, cognitive and behavioural responses in patients with major depression and dysthymia
Last passage percolation and traveling fronts
We consider a system of N particles with a stochastic dynamics introduced by
Brunet and Derrida. The particles can be interpreted as last passage times in
directed percolation on {1,...,N} of mean-field type. The particles remain
grouped and move like a traveling wave, subject to discretization and driven by
a random noise. As N increases, we obtain estimates for the speed of the front
and its profile, for different laws of the driving noise. The Gumbel
distribution plays a central role for the particle jumps, and we show that the
scaling limit is a L\'evy process in this case. The case of bounded jumps
yields a completely different behavior
Finding information about mental health in microblogging platforms: a Case study of depression
Searching for online health information has been well studied in web search, but social media, such as public microblogging services, are well known for different types of tacit information: personal experience and shared information. Finding useful information in public microblogging platforms is an on-going hard problem and so to begin to develop a better model of what health information can be found, Twitter posts using the word “depression” were examined as a case study of a search for a prevalent mental health issue. 13,279 public tweets were analysed using a mixed methods approach and compared to a general sample of tweets. First, a linguistic analysis suggested that tweets mentioning depression were typically anxious but not angry, and were less likely to be in the first person, indicating that most were not from individuals discussing their own depression. Second, to un-derstand what types of tweets can be found, an inductive thematic analysis revealed three major themes: 1) dissemi-nating information or link of information, 2) self-disclosing, and 3) the sharing of overall opinion; each had significantly different linguistic patterns. We conclude with a discussion of how different types of posts about mental health may be retrieved from public social media like Twitter
The Off Shell - Mixing in the QCD Sum Rules
The dependence of the mixing amplitude is analyzed with
the use of the QCD sum rules and the dispersion relation. Going off shell the
mixing decreases, changes sign at and is
negative in the space like region. Implications of this result to the isospin
breaking part of the nuclear force are discussed.Comment: 26 pages + 11 figures (PostScript
Inositol 1,3,4,5,6-pentakisphosphate 2-kinase is a distant IPK member with a singular inositide binding site for axial 2-OH recognition
Inositol phosphates (InsPs) are signaling molecules with multiple roles in cells. In particular Graphic (InsP6) is involved in mRNA export and editing or chromatin remodeling among other events. InsP6 accumulates as mixed salts (phytate) in storage tissues of plants and plays a key role in their physiology. Human diets that are exclusively grain-based provide an excess of InsP6 that, through chelation of metal ions, may have a detrimental effect on human health. Ins(1,3,4,5,6)P5 2-kinase (InsP5 2-kinase or Ipk1) catalyses the synthesis of InsP6 from InsP5 and ATP, and is the only enzyme that transfers a phosphate group to the axial 2-OH of the myo-inositide. We present the first structure for an InsP5 2-kinase in complex with both substrates and products. This enzyme presents a singular structural region for inositide binding that encompasses almost half of the protein. The key residues in substrate binding are identified, with Asp368 being responsible for recognition of the axial 2-OH. This study sheds light on the unique molecular mechanism for the synthesis of the precursor of inositol pyrophosphates
