    Exact stationary state for a deterministic high speed traffic model with open boundaries

    An exact solution for a high speed deterministic traffic model with open boundaries and synchronous update rule is presented. Because of the strong correlations in the model, the qualitative structure of the stationary state can be described for general values of the maximum speed. It is shown in the case of vmax=2v_{\rm max}=2 that a detailed analysis of this structure leads to an exact solution. Explicit expressions for the stationary state probabilities are given in terms of products of 24×2424\times 24 matrices.     Unsteady flow in rotating drums using laser Doppler velocimetry

    Non-destructive measurements by laser Doppler velocimetry is employed to study unsteady flow in a hollow drum filled with liquid. The drum is suddenly accelerated from rest or is suddenly decelerated from a steady rotation to rest. Pure water and glycerin-water mixtures are used as the test liquid in which polyethylenelatex particles are mixed as the light scattering tracer. The boundary layer formation, the time history of velocity, momentum and kinetic energy of the liquid, the wall-to-fluid force transfer, and the transient response time are determined. Also determined are the effects of side walls and fluid viscosity on the transient flow response. Of importance is the disclosure of Ekman layer instability near the inner radial wall of the test drum.     On the Communication of Scientific Results: The Full-Metadata Format

    In this paper, we introduce a scientific format for text-based data files, which facilitates storing and communicating tabular data sets. The so-called Full-Metadata Format builds on the widely used INI-standard and is based on four principles: readable self-documentation, flexible structure, fail-safe compatibility, and searchability. As a consequence, all metadata required to interpret the tabular data are stored in the same file, allowing for the automated generation of publication-ready tables and graphs and the semantic searchability of data file collections. The Full-Metadata Format is introduced on the basis of three comprehensive examples. The complete format and syntax is given in the appendix

    Systemic autoimmune diseases (SADs) are a group of chronic inflammatory conditions with autoimmune aetiology and many common clinical features, leading to a difficult diagnosis or deciding the appropriate treatment. Finding new treatments or applying the existing ones in a more effective way is especially hard in SADs due to the heterogeneity of molecular mechanisms within the same disease class. Based on this premise, the first step towards establishing a precision medicine strategy for SADs is to reclassify these conditions at the molecular level, which might result in a more homogenous stratification in terms of pathological molecular pathways. It is well known that the interplay of DNA methylation patterns and environmental factors, and between these, is determinant in the regulation of the immune system. This, along with the fact that the genetic contribution to disease is dependent on regulatory variants with very small effects, and the low concordance for autoimmunity in monozygotic twins suggests that epigenetic regulation may play an important role in the development of these diseases. Thus, DNA methylation information might be a valuable marker to reclassify the autoimmune disorders molecularly. We performed an unsupervised clustering analysis of genome-wide DNA methylation profiling of 437 cases distributed across 7 different clinical entities (rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, primary SjogrenÂŽs syndrome, primary antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, mixed connective tissue disease and undifferentiated connective tissue disease) and 115 healthy individuals.     Social Media, Gender and the Mediatisation of War: Exploring the German Armed Forces’ Visual Representation of the Afghanistan Operation on Facebook

    Studies on the mediatisation of war point to attempts of governments to regulate the visual perspective of their involvements in armed conflict – the most notable example being the practice of ‘embedded reporting’ in Iraq and Afghanistan. This paper focuses on a different strategy of visual meaning-making, namely, the publication of images on social media by armed forces themselves. Specifically, we argue that the mediatisation of war literature could profit from an increased engagement with feminist research, both within Critical Security/Critical Military Studies and within Science and Technology Studies that highlight the close connection between masculinity, technology and control. The article examines the German military mission in Afghanistan as represented on the German armed forces’ official Facebook page. Germany constitutes an interesting, and largely neglected, case for the growing literature on the mediatisation of war: its strong antimilitarist political culture makes the representation of war particularly delicate. The paper examines specific representational patterns of Germany’s involvement in Afghanistan and discusses the implications which arise from what is placed inside the frame of visibility and what remains out of its view

    Molecular Characterization of Monocyte Subsets Reveals Specific and Distinctive Molecular Signatures Associated With Cardiovascular Disease in Rheumatoid Arthritis

    Objectives: This study, developed within the Innovative Medicines Initiative Joint Undertaking project PRECISESADS framework, aimed at functionally characterize the monocyte subsets in RA patients, and analyze their involvement in the increased CV risk associated with RA.Methods: The frequencies of monocyte subpopulations in the peripheral blood of 140 RA patients and 145 healthy donors (HDs) included in the PRECISESADS study were determined by flow cytometry. A second cohort of 50 RA patients and 30 HDs was included, of which CD14+ and CD16+ monocyte subpopulations were isolated using immuno-magnetic selection. Their transcriptomic profiles (mRNA and microRNA), proinflammatory patterns and activated pathways were evaluated and related to clinical features and CV risk. Mechanistic in vitro analyses were further performed.Results: CD14++CD16+ intermediate monocytes were extended in both cohorts of RA patients. Their increased frequency was associated with the positivity for autoantibodies, disease duration, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction and the presence of atheroma plaques, as well as with the CV risk score. CD14+ and CD16+ monocyte subsets showed distinctive and specific mRNA and microRNA profiles, along with specific intracellular signaling activation, indicating different functionalities. Moreover, that specific molecular profiles were interrelated and associated to atherosclerosis development and increased CV risk in RA patients. In vitro, RA serum promoted differentiation of CD14+CD16− to CD14++CD16+ monocytes. Co-culture with RA-isolated monocyte subsets induced differential activation of endothelial cells.Conclusions: Our overall data suggest that the generation of inflammatory monocytes is associated to the autoimmune/inflammatory response that mediates RA. These monocyte subsets, -which display specific and distinctive molecular signatures- might promote endothelial dysfunction and in turn, the progression of atherosclerosis through a finely regulated process driving CVD development in RA
