    Comparison of official food control results in Finland between food establishments with and without a certified food safety management system

Publisher Copyright: © 2021 The Author(s)Certified food safety management systems (FSMSs), such as ISO 22000 and BRC, along with official food control, focus on food safety. European Union regulation 2017/625 requires to take FSMSs and their audits into account in official food control. To assess the possibility to decrease official food control frequency due to certified FSMSs the association of certified FSMSs on food business operators' (FBO) compliance was examined. The results of 1484 official inspections of 110 Finnish food establishments representing slaughterhouses, other meat establishments, fish and milk establishments, and bakeries with (n = 59) and without (n = 51) certified FSMS were studied over the period of 2016–2018. Altogether, 14 356 scores were given to 87 different items during the inspections. The comparison of scores between food establishments with and without certified FSMS discovered minor differences: 98.3% and 98.0% of inspected items in food establishments with and without a certified FSMS, respectively, did not impair food safety. The association between certified FSMSs and food establishments’ compliance was inconsistent in different establishment types and among inspected items. Therefore, the results do not support a decrease in the frequency of official food control inspections merely based on the existence of a certified FSMS. Instead, the results advocate for an individual assessment of the FBO's inspection frequency, based on the history of compliance.Peer reviewe

    Comparison of modelled and monitored deposition fluxes of sulphur and nitrogen to ICP-forest sites in Europe

    The EMEP MSC-W Eulerian chemical transport model, and its predictions of deposition of acidifying and eutrophying pollutants over Europe, play a key role in the development of emission control strategies for Europe. It is important that this model is tested against observational data. Here we compare the results of the EMEP model with measured data from 160 sites of the European Union/ICP Forest (Level II) monitoring network, for the years 1997 and 2000. This comparison comprises: (a) Precipitation amount, (b) Total deposition of SO42- to coniferous and deciduous forests, (c) Wet deposition of SO42-, NO3- and NH4+ in open field sites, and (d) Concentrations of SO42-, NO3- and NH4+ in precipitation. Concerning precipitation, the EMEP model and ICP network showed very similar overall levels (within 4% for 1997 and 11% for 2000). The correlation was, however, poor (r2=0.15-0.23). This can be attributed largely to the influence of a few outliers, combined with a small range of rainfall amounts for most points. Correlations between modelled and observed deposition values in this study were rather high (r2 values between 0.4-0.8 for most components and years), with mean values across all sites being within 30%. The EMEP model tends to give somewhat lower values for SO42-, NO3- and NH4+ wet deposition to ICP, but differences in mean values were within 20% in 1997 and 30% in 2000. Modelled and observed concentrations of SO 42-, NO3- and NH4+ in precipitation are very similar on average (differences of 0-14%), with good correlation between modelled and observed data (r 2=0.50-0.78). Differences between the EMEP model and ICP measurements are thought to arise from a mixture of problems with both the observations and model. However, the overall conclusion is that the EMEP model performs rather well in reproducing patterns of S and N deposition to European forests

    Physical properties and small-scale structure of the Lyman-alpha forest: Inversion of the HE 1122-1628 UVES spectrum

    We study the physical properties of the Lyman-alpha forest by applying the inversion method described by Pichon et al. (2001) to the high resolution and high S/N ratio spectrum of the z_em=2.40 quasar HE 1122-1628 obtained during Science Verification of UVES at the VLT. We compare the column densities obtained with the new fitting procedure with those derived using standard Voigt profile methods. The agreement is good and gives confidence in the new description of the Lyman-alpha forest as a continuous field as derived from our method. We show that the observed number density of lines with logN>13 and 14 is, respectively, 50 and 250 per unit redshift at z~2. We study the physical state of the gas, neglecting peculiar velocities, assuming a relation between the overdensity and the temperature. T=Tbar * rho^(2beta). There is an intrinsic degeneracy between the parameters beta and Tbar. We demonstrate that, at a fixed beta, the temperature at mean density, Tbar, can be uniquely extracted however. While applying the method to HE 1122-1628, we conclude that for 0.2<beta<0.3, 6000<Tbar<15000 K at z~2. We investigate the small scale structure of strong absorption lines using the information derived from the Lyman-beta, Lyman-gamma and Civ profiles. Introducing the Lyman-beta line in the fit allows us to reconstruct the density field up to rho~10 instead of 5 for the Lyman-alpha line only. There may be small velocity shifts ~10km.s^{-1} between the peaks in the Civ and Hi density profiles. Although the statistics is small, it seems that Civ/Hi and n_HI are anti-correlated. This could be a consequence of the high sensitivity of the Civ/Hi ratio to temperature. The presence of associated Ovi absorption, with similar profile, confirms that the gas is photo-ionized and at a temperature of T~10^5 K.Comment: 15 pages, 21 figures, accepted for publication in A&A.     Ischemic Preconditioning Improves Microvascular Endothelial Function in Remote Vasculature by Enhanced Prostacyclin Production.

    BACKGROUND The mechanisms underlying the effect of preconditioning on remote microvasculature remains undisclosed. The primary objective was to document the remote effect of ischemic preconditioning on microvascular function in humans. The secondary objective was to test if exercise also induces remote microvascular effects. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 12 healthy young men and women participated in 2 experimental days in a random counterbalanced order. On one day the participants underwent 4×5 minutes of forearm ischemic preconditioning, and on the other day they completed 4×5 minutes of hand-grip exercise. On both days, catheters were placed in the brachial and femoral artery and vein for infusion of acetylcholine, sodium nitroprusside, and epoprostenol. Vascular conductance was calculated from blood flow measurements with ultrasound Doppler and arterial and venous blood pressures. Ischemic preconditioning enhanced (P<0.05) the remote vasodilator response to intra-arterial acetylcholine in the leg at 5 and 90 minutes after application. The enhanced response was associated with a 6-fold increase (P<0.05) in femoral venous plasma prostacyclin levels and with a transient increase (P<0.05) in arterial plasma levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and vascular endothelial growth factor. In contrast, hand-grip exercise did not influence remote microvascular function. CONCLUSIONS These findings demonstrate that ischemic preconditioning of the forearm improves remote microvascular endothelial function and suggest that one of the underlying mechanisms is a humoral-mediated potentiation of prostacyclin formation

    Exponential Stellar Disks in Low Surface Brightness Galaxies: A Critical Test of Viscous Evolution

    Viscous redistribution of mass in Milky Way-type galactic disks is an appealing way of generating an exponential stellar profile over many scale lengths, almost independent of initial conditions, requiring only that the viscous timescale and star formation timescale are approximately equal. However, galaxies with solid-body rotation curves cannot undergo viscous evolution. Low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies have exponential surface brightness profiles, yet have slowly rising, nearly solid-body, rotation curves. Because of this, viscous evolution may be inefficient in LSB galaxies: the exponential profiles, instead would give important insight into initial conditions for galaxy disk formation. Using star formation laws from the literature, and tuning the efficiency of viscous processes to reproduce an exponential stellar profile in Milky Way-type galaxies, I test the role of viscous evolution in LSB galaxies. Under the conservative and not unreasonable condition that LSB galaxies are gravitationally unstable for at least a part of their lives, I find that it is impossible to rule out a significant role for viscous evolution. This type of model still offers an attractive way of producing exponential disks, even in LSB galaxies with slowly-rising rotation curves

    Psychological impact, support and information needs for women with an abnormal Pap smear: comparative results of a questionnaire in three European countries

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Extensive information on cervical cancer is currently available. Its effectiveness in reducing anxiety in women receiving abnormal Pap tests is not clear. We investigated current practices of communicating abnormal Pap results to evaluate women's reactions and determine the sources of information they use subsequently.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A self-administered questionnaire-based study was performed in 1475 women in France, Spain and Portugal who had received an abnormal Pap smear result in the 12 months prior to completing the questionnaire. Questions covered methods of communication of the result, emotional reactions, support received (from the physician and entourage), and information sources, using pre-specified check box options and rating scales. Data were analyzed by country.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Pap test results were mostly communicated by phone to Spanish women (76%), while physician letters were common in France (59%) and Portugal (36%). Frequent reactions were anxiety, panic and stress, which were less common in Spanish women than their French and Portuguese counterparts. After discussing with their physician, half of the participants were worried, despite rating highly the psychological support received. Over 90% of women in each country discussed their results with family or friends. Partners provided a high level of support. Overall, the abnormal diagnosis and consequences had a low to medium impact on daily, professional and family life and their relationships with their partner. Impact was higher in Spanish women than the French or Portuguese. Information on the diagnosis and its treatment was rated average, and nearly 80% of participants wanted more information, notably French women. Preferred sources were the physician and the Internet.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Women expressed a strong wish for more information about cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases, and that their physician play a major role in its provision and in support. There was a heavy reliance on the close entourage and the Internet for information, highlighting the need for dissemination of accurate material. Differences between countries suggest information management strategies may need to be tailored to different geographical regions.</p
