    Phosphatogenèse en atolls polynésiens : la filiation mattes cyanobactériennes-phosphorites

    Des mattes cyanobactériennes épaisses (kopara) sont présentes dans certaines mares et lagons saumâtres des atolls polynésiens. La matière organique ainsi accumulée est préservée grâce à l'anoxie du milieu. La productivité élevée de ces mattes microbiennes repose sur la richesse en seuls nutritifs du milieu interstitiel des carbonates sous-jacents, et procède donc du fonctionnement global des atolls par endo-upwelling géothermique (Rougerie et Wauthy, 1986, 1993). Des analyses chimiques ainsi que des observations en microscopie électronique d'échantillons de phosphates insulaires ont été effectuées, parallèlement à une analyse comparative kopara-phosphate menée sur la fraction hydrocarbures de la matière organique.     Rotating superfluids in anharmonic traps: From vortex lattices to giant vortices

    We study a superfluid in a rotating anharmonic trap and explicate a rigorous proof of a transition from a vortex lattice to a giant vortex state as the rotation is increased beyond a limiting speed determined by the interaction strength. The transition is characterized by the disappearance of the vortices from the annulus where the bulk of the superfluid is concentrated due to centrifugal forces while a macroscopic phase circulation remains. The analysis is carried out within two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii theory at large coupling constant and reveals significant differences between 'soft' anharmonic traps (like a quartic plus quadratic trapping potential) and traps with a fixed boundary: In the latter case the transition takes place in a parameter regime where the size of vortices is very small relative to the width of the annulus whereas in 'soft' traps the vortex lattice persists until the width of the annulus becomes comparable to the vortex cores. Moreover, the density profile in the annulus where the bulk is concentrated is, in the 'soft' case, approximately gaussian with long tails and not of the Thomas-Fermi type like in a trap with a fixed boundary.Comment: Published version.     How do general practitioners put preventive care recommendations into practice? A cross-sectional study in Switzerland and France.

    We previously identified that general practitioners (GPs) in French-speaking regions of Europe had a variable uptake of common preventive recommendations. In this study, we describe GPs' reports of how they put different preventive recommendations into practice. Cross-sectional study conducted in 2015 in Switzerland and France. 3400 randomly selected GPs were asked to complete a postal (n=1100) or online (n=2300) questionnaire. GPs who exclusively practiced complementary and alternative medicine were not eligible for the study. 764 GPs (response rate: postal 47%, online 11%) returned the questionnaire (428 in Switzerland and 336 in France). We investigated how the GPs performed five preventive practices (screening for dyslipidaemia, colorectal and prostate cancer, identification of hazardous alcohol consumption and brief intervention), examining which age group they selected, the screening frequency, the test they used, whether they favoured shared decision for prostate cancer screening and their definition of hazardous alcohol use. A large variability was observed in the way in which GPs provide these practices. 41% reported screening yearly for cholesterol, starting and stopping at variable ages. 82% did not use any test to identify hazardous drinking. The most common responses for defining hazardous drinking were, for men, ≥21 drinks/week (24%) and ≥4 drinks/occasion for binge drinking (20%), and for women, ≥14 drinks/week (28%) and ≥3 drinks/occasion (21%). Screening for colorectal cancer, mainly with colonoscopy in Switzerland (86%) and stool-based tests in France (93%), was provided every 10 years in Switzerland (65%) and 2 years in France (91%) to patients between 50 years (87%) and 75 years (67%). Prostate cancer screening, usually with shared decision (82%), was provided yearly (62%) to patients between 50 years (74%) and 75-80 years (32%-34%). The large diversity in the way these practices are provided needs to be addressed, as it could be related to some misunderstandingof the current guidelines, to barriers for guideline uptake or, more likely, to the absence of agreement between the various recommendations

    Critical Rotational Speeds for Superfluids in Homogeneous Traps

    We present an asymptotic analysis of the effects of rapid rotation on the ground state properties of a superfluid confined in a two-dimensional trap. The trapping potential is assumed to be radial and homogeneous of degree larger than two in addition to a quadratic term. Three critical rotational velocities are identified, marking respectively the first appearance of vortices, the creation of a `hole' of low density within a vortex lattice, and the emergence of a giant vortex state free of vortices in the bulk. These phenomena have previously been established rigorously for a `flat' trap with fixed boundary but the `soft' traps considered in the present paper exhibit some significant differences, in particular the giant vortex regime, that necessitate a new approach. These differences concern both the shape of the bulk profile and the size of vortices relative to the width of the annulus where the bulk of the superfluid resides. Close to the giant vortex transition the profile is of Thomas-Fermi type in `flat' traps, whereas it is gaussian for soft traps, and the `last' vortices to survive in the bulk before the giant vortex transition are small relative to the width of the annulus in the former case but of comparable size in the latter.Comment: To appear in J.     Inhomogeneous Vortex Patterns in Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensates

    We consider a 2D rotating Bose gas described by the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) theory and investigate the properties of the ground state of the theory for rotational speeds close to the critical speed for vortex nucleation. While one could expect that the vortex distribution should be homogeneous within the condensate we prove by means of an asymptotic analysis in the strongly interacting (Thomas-Fermi) regime that it is not. More precisely we rigorously derive a formula due to Sheehy and Radzihovsky [Phys. Rev. A 70, 063620(R) (2004)] for the vortex distribution, a consequence of which is that the vortex distribution is strongly inhomogeneous close to the critical speed and gradually homogenizes when the rotation speed is increased.     DNA Barcoding Reveals Cryptic Diversity in Lumbricus terrestris L., 1758 (Clitellata): Resurrection of L. herculeus (Savigny, 1826)

    The widely studied and invasive earthworm, Lumbricus terrestris L., 1758 has been the subject of nomenclatural debate for many years. However these disputes were not based on suspicions of heterogeneity, but rather on the descriptions and nomenclatural acts associated with the species name. Large numbers of DNA barcode sequences of the cytochrome oxidase I obtained for nominal L. terrestris and six congeneric species reveal that there are two distinct lineages within nominal L. terrestris. One of those lineages contains the Swedish population from which the name-bearing specimen of L. terrestris was obtained. The other contains the population from which the syntype series of Enterion herculeum Savigny, 1826 was collected. In both cases modern and old representatives yielded barcode sequences allowing us to clearly establish that these are two distinct species, as different from one another as any other pair of congeners in our data set. The two are morphologically indistinguishable, except by overlapping size-related characters. We have designated a new neotype for L. terrestris. The newly designated neotype and a syntype of L. herculeus yielded DNA adequate for sequencing part of the cytochrome oxidase I gene (COI). The sequence data make possible the objective determination of the identities of earthworms morphologically identical to L. terrestris and L. herculeus, regardless of body size and segment number. Past work on nominal L. terrestris could have been on either or both species, although L. herculeus has yet to be found outside of Europe

    Fam65b is a new transcriptional target of FOXO1 that regulates RhoA signaling for T lymphocyte migration

    Forkhead box Os (FOXOs) transcription factors favor both T cell quiescence and trafficking through their control of the expression of genes involved in cell cycle progression, adhesion and homing. Here, we report that the product of the fam65b gene is a new transcriptional target of FOXO1 that regulates RhoA activity. We show that Fam65b binds the small GTPase RhoA via a non canonical domain and represses its activity by decreasing its GTP loading. As a consequence, Fam65b negatively regulates chemokine-induced responses such as adhesion, morphological polarisation and migration. Therefore, these results show the existence of a new functional link between FOXO1 and RhoA pathways, through which the FOXO1 target Fam65b tonically dampens chemokine-induced migration by repressing RhoA activity

    Detection of Mitochondrial COII DNA Sequences in Ant Guts as a Method for Assessing Termite Predation by Ants

    Termites and ants contribute more to animal biomass in tropical rain forests than any other single group and perform vital ecosystem functions. Although ants prey on termites, at the community level the linkage between these groups is poorly understood. Thus, assessing the distribution and specificity of ant termitophagy is of considerable interest.We describe an approach for quantifying ant-termite food webs by sequencing termite DNA (cytochrome c oxidase subunit II, COII) from ant guts and apply this to a soil-dwelling ant community from tropical rain forest in Gabon. We extracted DNA from 215 ants from 15 species. Of these, 17.2% of individuals had termite DNA in their guts, with BLAST analysis confirming the identity of 34.1% of these termites to family level or better. Although ant species varied in detection of termite DNA, ranging from 63% (5/7; Camponotus sp. 1) to 0% (0/7; Ponera sp. 1), there was no evidence (with small sample sizes) for heterogeneity in termite consumption across ant taxa, and no evidence for species-specific ant-termite predation. In all three ant species with identifiable termite DNA in multiple individuals, multiple termite species were represented. Furthermore, the two termite species that were detected on multiple occasions in ant guts were in both cases found in multiple ant species, suggesting that anttermite food webs are not strongly compartmentalised. However, two ant species were found to consume only Anoplotermes-group termites, indicating possible predatory specialisation at a higher taxonomic level. Using a laboratory feeding test, we were able to detect termite COII sequences in ant guts up to 2 h after feeding, indicating that our method only detects recent feeding events. Our data provide tentative support for the hypothesis that unspecialised termite predation by ants is widespread and highlight the use of molecular approaches for future studies of ant-termite food webs
