Social Work Practitioners and Technology Transfer
The application of new skills and interventions into the practice community is often slow and haphazard. A coaching intervention is proposed to augment traditional social work education techniques and maximize the integration of new knowledge into social work practice. This coaching model includes assessment of a practitioner\u27s readiness for change, stage-wise coaching interventions, assessment of organizational barriers to the transfer of new information, and development of strategies to address these barriers. Implications for social work professionals development and future research are discussed
Magnetic Monopole Noise
Magnetic monopoles are hypothetical elementary particles exhibiting quantized
magnetic charge and quantized magnetic flux . A classic proposal for detecting such magnetic charges is to measure the
quantized jump in magnetic flux threading the loop of a superconducting
quantum interference device (SQUID) when a monopole passes through it.
Naturally, with the theoretical discovery that a plasma of emergent magnetic
charges should exist in several lanthanide-pyrochlore magnetic insulators,
including DyTiO, this SQUID technique was proposed for their direct
detection. Experimentally, this has proven extremely challenging because of the
high number density, and the generation-recombination (GR) fluctuations, of the
monopole plasma. Recently, however, theoretical advances have allowed the
spectral density of magnetic-flux noise due to GR
fluctuations of magnetic charge pairs to be determined. These
theories present a sequence of strikingly clear predictions for the
magnetic-flux noise signature of emergent magnetic monopoles. Here we report
development of a high-sensitivity, SQUID based flux-noise spectrometer, and
consequent measurements of the frequency and temperature dependence of
for DyTiO samples. Virtually all the elements
of predicted for a magnetic monopole plasma, including the
existence of intense magnetization noise and its characteristic frequency and
temperature dependence, are detected directly. Moreover, comparisons of
simulated and measured correlation functions of the magnetic-flux
noise imply that the motion of magnetic charges is strongly
correlated because traversal of the same trajectory by two magnetic charges of
same sign is forbidden

A Microfluidic Device for Whole-Animal Drug Screening Using Electrophysiological Measures in the Nematode C. Elegans
This paper describes the fabrication and use of a microfluidic device for performing whole-animal chemical screens using non-invasive electrophysiological readouts of neuromuscular function in the nematode worm, C. elegans. The device consists of an array of microchannels to which electrodes are attached to form recording modules capable of detecting the electrical activity of the pharynx, a heart-like neuromuscular organ involved in feeding. The array is coupled to a tree-like arrangement of distribution channels that automatically delivers one nematode to each recording module. The same channels are then used to perfuse the recording modules with test solutions while recording the electropharyngeogram (EPG) from each worm with sufficient sensitivity to detect each pharyngeal contraction. The device accurately reported the acute effects of known anthelmintics (anti-nematode drugs) and also correctly distinguished a specific drug-resistant mutant strain of C. elegans from wild type. The approach described here is readily adaptable to parasitic species for the identification of novel anthelmintics. It is also applicable in toxicology and drug discovery programs for human metabolic and degenerative diseases for which C. elegans is used as a model.Chemistry and Chemical Biolog
Extracellular microRNAs exhibit sequence-dependent stability and cellular release kinetics
Multiple studies have described extracellular microRNAs (ex-miRNAs) as being remarkably stable despite the hostile extracellular environment, when stored at 4oC or lower. Here we show that many ex-miRNAs are rapidly degraded when incubated at 37oC in the presence of serum (thereby simulating physiologically relevant conditions). Stability varied widely between miRNAs, with half-lives ranging from similar to 1.5 hours to more than 13 hours. Notably, ex-miRNA half-lives calculated in two different biofluids (murine serum and C2C12 mouse myotube conditioned medium) were highly similar, suggesting that intrinsic sequence properties are a determining factor in miRNA stability. By contrast, ex-miRNAs associated with extracellular vesicles (isolated by size exclusion chromatography) were highly stable. The release of ex-miRNAs from C2C12 myotubes was measured over time, and mathematical modelling revealed miRNA-specific release kinetics. While some ex-miRNAs reached the steady state in cell culture medium within 24 hours, the extracellular level of miR-16 did not reach equilibrium, even after 3 days in culture. These findings are indicative of miRNA-specific release and degradation kinetics with implications for the utility of ex-miRNAs as biomarkers, and for the potential of ex-miRNAs to transfer gene regulatory information between cells
Some properties of the k-dimensional Lyness' map
This paper is devoted to study some properties of the k-dimensional Lyness'
map. Our main result presentes a rational vector field that gives a Lie
symmetry for F. This vector field is used, for k less or equal to 5 to give
information about the nature of the invariant sets under F. When k is odd, we
also present a new (as far as we know) first integral for F^2 which allows to
deduce in a very simple way several properties of the dynamical system
generated by F. In particular for this case we prove that, except on a given
codimension one algebraic set, none of the positive initial conditions can be a

The eventization of leisure and the strange death of alternative Leeds
The communicative potential of city spaces as leisure spaces is a central assumption of political activism and the creation of alternative, counter-cultural and subcultural scenes. However, such potential for city spaces is limited by the gentrification, privatization and eventization of city centres in the wake of wider societal and cultural struggles over leisure, work and identity formation. In this paper, we present research on alternative scenes in the city of Leeds to argue that the eventization of the city centre has led to a marginalization and of alternative scenes on the fringes of the city. Such marginalization has not caused the death of alternative Leeds or political activism associated with those scenes—but it has changed the leisure spaces (physical, political and social) in which alternative scenes contest the mainstream
Symptoms of depression and cardiovascular reactions to acute psychological stress: Evidence from a population study
Depression and exaggerated cardiovascular reactivity are considered risk factors for cardiovascular disease, possibly as a result of common antecedents, such as altered autonomic nervous system function. We examined the association between depressive symptomatology and cardiovascular reactions to psychological stress in 1608 adults (875 women) comprising three distinct age cohorts: 24-, 44-, and 63-year olds. Depression was assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Blood pressure and heart rate were measured at baseline and during the paced auditory serial arithmetic test. Depression scores were negatively associated with systolic blood pressure and heart rate reactions, after adjustment for likely confounders such as sex, cohort, occupational status, body mass index, stress task performance score, baseline cardiovascular activity, antidepressant and antihypertensive medication. The direction of association was opposite to that which would be expected if excessive reactivity were to mediate the association between depression and cardiovascular disease outcomes or if they shared common antecedents
Effect of partnership status on preferences for facial self-resemblance
Self-resemblance has been found to have a context-dependent effect when expressing preferences for faces. Whereas dissimilarity preference during mate choice in animals is often explained as an evolutionary adaptation to increase heterozygosity of offspring, self-resemblance can be also favored in humans, reflecting, e.g., preference for kinship cues. We performed two studies, using transformations of facial photographs to manipulate levels of resemblance with the rater, to examine the influence of self resemblance in single vs. coupled individuals. Raters assessed facial attractiveness of other-sex and same sex photographs according to both short-term and long-term relationship contexts. We found a preference for dissimilarity of other-sex and same-sex faces in single individuals, but no effect of self-resemblance in coupled raters. No effect of sex of participant or short-term vs. long-term attractiveness rating was observed. The results support the evolutionary interpretation that dissimilarity of other-sex faces is preferred by uncoupled individuals as an adaptive mechanism to avoid inbreeding. In contrast, lower dissimilarity preference of other-sex faces in coupled individuals may reflect suppressed attention to attractiveness cues in potential alternative partners as a relationship maintenance mechanism, and its substitution by attention to cues of kinship and psychological similarity connected with greater likelihood of prosocial behavior acquisition from such persons
