Involvement of Latino parents in their children\u27s education and college preparation process is integral to the educational success of Latino students. This two-phase, mixed methods study explored the perspectives of Latino parents about their involvement in their children\u27s education and college preparation process. First, archival data of the Path to College organization was examined for this study. Archival data were questionnaires completed by 132 Latino parents. Additionally, 5 separate semi-structured, face-to-face, focus groups were conducted with a sub-sample of 23 parents who had completed the questionnaire for the Path to College. All focus groups were conducted during the period of May through June, 2008. Research questions addressed the collected data in accordance with social capital and cultural capital theories. A thorough analysis of data revealed that across the 5 focus groups, Latino parents expressed high at-home support for their children\u27s present and future education. Latino parents want partnerships with their children\u27s teachers, and schools, however, cultural factors often present challenges to these parents\u27 involvement in their children\u27s education and college preparation. Further, more than half (53%) of respondents reported that they did not feel comfortable knowing how they would pay for their child\u27s college education while 43% reported feeling comfortable. Across focus groups, Latino parents indicated a need for information related to requirements and resources for higher education. Findings also revealed that 30% of respondents reported having completed up to the 12th grade or GED, 35.75% reported having completed 11th grade or below, 9.25 % completed an Associates of Arts degree, 4% completed a bachelor\u27s degree and 4% completed a master\u27s degree. None of the respondents reported having completed a doctorate or professional degree. To that end, Latino parents expressed concern about the limited number of role models in their local groups and communities with respect to higher education. Additionally, findings revealed that 6 major themes emerged across focus groups: leadership and parenting, family and culture, communication, partnerships and networks, educational background and knowledge, information and resources. Each theme represents a common thread uncovered through an extensive examination of the focus group data and the archival data

Valorization of Tomato Processing by-Products: Fatty Acid Extraction and Production of Bio-Based Materials

A method consisting of the alkaline hydrolysis of tomato pomace by-products has been optimized to obtain a mixture of unsaturated and polyhydroxylated fatty acids as well as a non-hydrolysable secondary residue. Reaction rates and the activation energy of the hydrolysis were calculated to reduce costs associated with chemicals and energy consumption. Lipid and non-hydrolysable fractions were chemically (infrared (IR) spectroscopy, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS)) and thermally (differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)) characterized. In addition, the fatty acid mixture was used to produce cutin-based polyesters. Freestanding films were prepared by non-catalyzed melt-polycondensation and characterized by Attenuated Total Reflected-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), DSC, TGA, Water Contact Angles (WCA), and tensile tests. These bio-based polymers were hydrophobic, insoluble, infusible, and thermally stable, their physical properties being tunable by controlling the presence of unsaturated fatty acids and oxygen in the reaction. The participation of an oxidative crosslinking side reaction is proposed to be responsible for such modifications.Andalusian Regional Government P11-TEP-7418Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad AGL2015-65246-R and AGL2017-83036-RFondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER) AGL2015-65246-R and AGL2017-83036-

Objectives: To estimate the risk of miscarriage after amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS) based on a systematic review of the literature. Methods: A search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and The Cochrane Library (2000-2017) was carried out to identify studies reporting complications following CVS or amniocentesis. The inclusion criteria for the systematic review were studies reporting results from large controlled studies (n1,000 invasive procedures) and those reporting data for pregnancy loss prior to 24 weeks’ gestation. Data for cases that had invasive procedure and controls were inputted in contingency tables and risk of miscarriage was estimated for each study. Summary statistics were calculated after taking into account the weighting for each study included in the systematic review. Procedure-related risk of miscarriage was estimated as a weighted risk difference from the summary statistics for cases and controls. Results: The electronic search from the databases yielded 2,465 potential citations of which 2,431 were excluded, leaving 34 studies for full-text review. The final review included 10 studies for amniocentesis and 6 studies for CVS, which were used to estimate risk of miscarriage in pregnancies that had an invasive procedure and the control pregnancies that did not. The procedure-related risk of miscarriage following amniocentesis was 0.35% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.07 to 0.63) and that following CVS was 0.35% (95%C CI: -0.31 to 1.00). Conclusion: The procedure-related risks of miscarriage following amniocentesis and CVS are lower than currently quoted to women

The marshes of the Guadalquivir River contain the largest area of rice cultivation in Spain, where more than 40,000 ha are used every year for rice production. These wetland areas provide a perfect place for rice cultivation, and represent a unique aquaticterrestrial habitat that hold more wintering waterfowl than any other European wetland. Paddies require large amounts nitrogen and phosphorus for their growth, development and production. Though, flooded conditions used for rice cultivation drastically diminish efficiency inorganic nitrogen fertilizers, being only 30–40% used by the plant, and in some cases even less. Large amounts of nitrogen fertilizers are dissolved in the surface water and lost, causing environmental pollution and health problems due to losses through N2O and NO volatilization, denitrification, and leaching (Ishii et al., 2011)

The use of REST (Representational State Transfer Protocol) web services has increased and has become the most widely used implementation today. The most crucial part of a web development project based on REST services is the choice of the right tools for the front-end, back-end, and database environment. The main objective of this work is to test the MEAN stack as an effective solution for a web application based on REST services. JavaScript has been the client-side programming language running in the browser. The MEAN stack consists of MongoDB (database), Node.js. (web server), Express (back-end), and Angular (front-end) to build web applications. We compare the MEAN stack with a very popular stack such as Java EE that groups MongoDB (database), Apache/Tomcat (web server), Spring boot (back-end) and JSP/HTML/CSS (front-end), with respect to its components, features, and environment configuration. Two similar applications were built with the MEAN and Java EE stacks. We compared and analyzed several features and test criteria such as response time, performance, and data loading.     Keywords: software architecture, Javascript, REST, web service, Java E
