Aerosol characterization at the Saharan AERONET site Tamanrasset
More than 2 years of columnar atmospheric aerosol measurements (2006-2009) at the Tamanrasset site (22.79° N, 5.53° E, 1377 m a.s.l.), in the heart of the Sahara, are analysed. Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) level 2.0 data were used. The KCICLO (K is the name of a constant and ciclo means cycle in Spanish) method was applied to a part of the level 1.5 data series to improve the quality of the results. The annual variability of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and Ångström exponent (AE) has been found to be strongly linked to the convective boundary layer (CBL) thermodynamic features. The dry-cool season (autumn and winter) is characterized by a shallow CBL and very low mean turbidity (AOD ∼0.09 at 440 nm, AE ∼0.62). The wet-hot season (spring and summer) is dominated by high turbidity of coarse dust particles (AE ∼0.28, AOD ∼0.39 at 440 nm) and a deep CBL. The aerosol-type characterization shows desert mineral dust as the prevailing aerosol. Both pure Saharan dust and very clear sky conditions are observed depending on the season. However, several case studies indicate an anthropogenic fine mode contribution from the industrial areas in Libya and Algeria. The concentration weighted trajectory (CWT) source apportionment method was used to identify potential sources of air masses arriving at Tamanrasset at several heights for each season. Microphysical and optical properties and precipitable water vapour were also investigated
Twenty three flocks from commercial broilers, without vaccination plans against
IBD (Gumboro) at the Sumapaz area (Cundinamarca, Colombia), were evaluated
under serological and histopathological studies for this entity. A serologic prevalence
of 92.0% was found in the area under study, and according to the records the
morbility and mortality rates were 47.5 and 12.0%, respectively. It was also established
that the mortality rate generally decreases as the age of animals increases.
Histopathological findings showed a good correlation with the serological studies. Avicultur
Short-term changes in the northwest african upwelling system induced by saharan dust deposition events
During the last 7-year period (2000-2006) atmosphere circulation changes show strong influences on the dust storm deposition dynamics and, as a result, on the primary production dynamics of the northwest African Upwelling System. From 2000 to 2006, the annual mean sea level pressure became higher ranging from 1014 to 1015 mb. Mean annual zonal wind intensity became higher (from 1.1 to 1.8 m s-1), while the mean annual meridional was reduced from 6.2 to 5.3 m s-1 at the north of the Canary Islands. Mean annual satellite-derived AVHRR/NOAA SST recorded in the northwest African Upwelling became warmer in both locations, from 18.3ºC to 18.8ºC in Cape Ghir and from 19.5ºC to 20.3ºC north Canary Islands waters. CHL records from the SeaWiFS/OV-2 showed a different pattern trend. Mean annual CHL levels increased at Cape Ghir from 0.65 mg m-3 to 0.9 mg m-3 and significantly reduced from 0.59 mg m-3 to 0.31 mg m-3 at the north of the Canary Islands. Changes observed in the role of CHL during the last 7-years period could be associated to intensive dust deposition and exceptional weather warming observed in this area since 2000. However, this study focused on a 7-year period and conclusions on possible links between dust deposition and marine biochemistry activity cannot be generalized
IR-correlated 31 GHz radio emission from Orion East
Lynds dark cloud LDN1622 represents one of the best examples of anomalous
dust emission, possibly originating from small spinning dust grains. We present
Cosmic Background Imager (CBI) 31 GHz data of LDN1621, a diffuse dark cloud to
the north of LDN1622 in a region known as Orion East. A broken ring with
diameter g\approx 20 arcmin of diffuse emission is detected at 31 GHz, at
\approx 20-30 mJy beam with an angular resolution of \approx 5 arcmin.
The ring-like structure is highly correlated with Far Infra-Red emission at
m with correlation coefficients of r \approx 0.7-0.8, significant
at . Multi-frequency data are used to place constraints on other
components of emission that could be contributing to the 31 GHz flux. An
analysis of the GB6 survey maps at 4.85 GHz yields a upper limit on
free-free emission of 7.2 mJy beam (\la 30 per cent of the observed
flux) at the CBI resolution. The bulk of the 31 GHz flux therefore appears to
be mostly due to dust radiation. Aperture photometry, at an angular resolution
of 13 arcmin and with an aperture of diameter 30 arcmin, allowed the use of
IRAS maps and the {\it WMAP} 5-year W-band map at 93.5 GHz. A single modified
blackbody model was fitted to the data to estimate the contribution from
thermal dust, which amounts to \sim\sim100 \mu18.1\pm4.4 \mu^{-1}$, consistent with the values found for
LDN1622.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables, submitted to MNRA
Influences of family and school on the present and future feeding and health of children

Hemorrhagic enteritis (HE) in 4 to 11 weeks old turkeys is described by the first time in Colombia, based on gross, morphologic and electron microscopic studies. Sick animales presented enteritis and splenomegaly as the main findings. Mononuclear cells of the lamina propria of the small intestine presented intranuclear inclusion bodies. In the spleen these bodies were seen in most of the cells of white and red pulp. The inclusion bodies were slightly eosinophilic and the chromatin was displaced to the nuclear membrane. A basophilic round flattened body, displaced to a nuclear pole, suggested a nucleolus. Ultrastructural studies of the inclusion development from the initial appearance of a cristaloid material to the final formation of large amounts of capsids and virions are described. Negative staing of spleen macerates presented typical adenovirus particles but these particles were not detected in the intestinal content by the same technique.
Long-term catheterization: current approaches in the diagnosis and treatment of port-related infections
Since the first description in 1982, totally implanted venous access ports have progressively improved patients' quality of life and medical assistance when a medical condition requires the use of long-term venous access. Currently, they are part of the standard medical care for oncohematologic patients. However, apart from mechanical and thrombotic complications, there are also complications associated with biofilm development inside the catheters. These biofilms increase the cost of medical assistance and extend hospitalization. The most frequently involved micro-organisms in these infections are gram-positive cocci. Many efforts have been made to understand biofilm formation within the lumen catheters, and to resolve catheter-related infection once it has been established. Apart from systemic antibiotic treatment, the use of local catheter treatment (ie, antibiotic lock technique) is widely employed. Many different antimicrobial options have been tested, with different outcomes, in clinical and in in vitro assays. The stability of antibiotic concentration in the lock solution once instilled inside the catheter lumen remains unresolved. To prevent infection, it is mandatory to perform hand hygiene before catheter insertion and manipulation, and to disinfect catheter hubs, connectors, and injection ports before accessing the catheter. At present, there are still unresolved questions regarding the best antimicrobial agent for catheter-related bloodstream infection treatment and the duration of concentration stability of the antibiotic solution within the lumen of the port
