Homogenization and enhancement for the G-equation
We consider the so-called G-equation, a level set Hamilton-Jacobi equation,
used as a sharp interface model for flame propagation, perturbed by an
oscillatory advection in a spatio-temporal periodic environment. Assuming that
the advection has suitably small spatial divergence, we prove that, as the size
of the oscillations diminishes, the solutions homogenize (average out) and
converge to the solution of an effective anisotropic first-order
(spatio-temporal homogeneous) level set equation. Moreover we obtain a rate of
convergence and show that, under certain conditions, the averaging enhances the
velocity of the underlying front. We also prove that, at scale one, the level
sets of the solutions of the oscillatory problem converge, at long times, to
the Wulff shape associated with the effective Hamiltonian. Finally we also
consider advection depending on position at the integral scale
d-like Symmetry of the Order Parameter and Intrinsic Josephson Effects in Bi2212 Cross-Whisker Junctions
An intrinsic tunnel junction was made using two Bi-2212 single crystal
whiskers. The two whiskers with a cross-angle were overlaid at their c-planes
and connected by annealing. The angular dependence of the critical current
density along the c-axis is of the d-wave symmetry. However, the angular
dependence is much stronger than that of the conventional d-wave. Furthermore,
the current vs. voltage characteristics of the cross-whiskers junctions show a
multiple-branch structure at any cross-angle, indicating the formation of the
intrinsic Josephson junction array.Comment: 4 pages PDF fil
Bladder metastases of appendiceal mucinous adenocarcinoma: a case presentation

Abstract

Background

Appendiceal adenocarcinoma is rare with a frequency of 0.08% of all surgically removed appendices. Few cases of appendiceal carcinoma infiltrating the bladder wall for spatial contiguity have been documented.

Case Presentation

A case is reported of a 45-years old woman with mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the appendix with bladder metastasis. Although ultrasonography and voided urinary cytology were negative, abdomen computed tomography (CT) scan and cystoscopy and subsequent pathological examination revealed a mass exclusively located in the anterior wall of the bladder. Histopathology of the transurethral bladder resection revealed a bladder adenocarcinoma [6 cm (at the maximum diameter) × 2,5 cm; approximate weight: 10 gr] with focal mucinous aspects penetrating the muscle and perivisceral fat. Laparotomy evidenced the presence of a solid mass of the appendix (2,5 cm × 3 cm × 2 cm) extending to the loco-regional lymph nodes. Appendectomy and right hemicolectomy, linfoadenectomy and partial cystectomy were performed. The subsequent pathological examination revealed a mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the appendix with metastatic cells colonising the anterior bladder wall and several colic lymph nodes.

Conclusions

The rarity of the appendiceal carcinoma invading the urinary bladder and its usual involvement of nearest organs and the posterior bladder wall, led us to describe this case which demonstrates the ability of the appendiceal cancer to metastasize different regions of urinary bladder.</p
Search for the Higgs boson in events with missing transverse energy and b quark jets produced in proton-antiproton collisions at s**(1/2)=1.96 TeV
We search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with an
electroweak vector boson in events with no identified charged leptons, large
imbalance in transverse momentum, and two jets where at least one contains a
secondary vertex consistent with the decay of b hadrons. We use ~1 fb-1
integrated luminosity of proton-antiproton collisions at s**(1/2)=1.96 TeV
recorded by the CDF II experiment at the Tevatron. We find 268 (16) single
(double) b-tagged candidate events, where 248 +/- 43 (14.4 +/- 2.7) are
expected from standard model background processes. We place 95% confidence
level upper limits on the Higgs boson production cross section for several
Higgs boson masses ranging from 110 GeV/c2 to 140 GeV/c2. For a mass of 115
GeV/c2 the observed (expected) limit is 20.4 (14.2) times the standard model
prediction.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Observation of Hadronic W Decays in t-tbar Events with the Collider Detector at Fermilab
We observe hadronic W decays in t-tbar -> W (-> l nu) + >= 4 jet events using
a 109 pb-1 data sample of p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV collected with
the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). A peak in the dijet invariant mass
distribution is obtained that is consistent with W decay and inconsistent with
the background prediction by 3.3 standard deviations. From this peak we measure
the W mass to be 77.2 +- 4.6 (stat+syst) GeV/c^2. This result demonstrates the
presence of two W bosons in t-tbar candidates in the W (-> l nu) + >= 4 jet
channel.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR
Measurement of the Strong Coupling Constant from Inclusive Jet Production at the Tevatron Collider
We report a measurement of the strong coupling constant, ,
extracted from inclusive jet production in collisions at
1800 GeV. The QCD prediction for the evolution of with
jet transverse energy is tested over the range 40<<450 GeV using
for the renormalization scale. The data show good agreement with QCD in
the region below 250 GeV. In the text we discuss the data-theory comparison in
the region from 250 to 450 GeV. The value of at the mass of the
boson averaged over the range 40<<250 GeV is found to be
. The associated theoretical uncertainties are mainly due to the choice
of renormalization scale (^{+6%}_{-4%}) and input parton distribution
functions (5%).Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, using RevTeX. Submitted to Physical Review

Inclusive Search for Anomalous Production of High-pT Like-Sign Lepton Pairs in Proton-Antiproton Collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV
We report on a search for anomalous production of events with at least two
charged, isolated, like-sign leptons with pT > 11 GeV/c using a 107 pb^-1
sample of 1.8 TeV ppbar collisions collected by the CDF detector. We define a
signal region containing low background from Standard Model processes. To avoid
bias, we fix the final cuts before examining the event yield in the signal
region using control regions to test the Monte Carlo predictions. We observe no
events in the signal region, consistent with an expectation of
0.63^(+0.84)_(-0.07) events. We present 95% confidence level limits on new
physics processes in both a signature-based context as well as within a
representative minimal supergravity (tanbeta = 3) model.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures. Minor textual changes, cosmetic improvements to

Observation and Mass Measurement of the Baryon
We report the observation and measurement of the mass of the bottom, strange
baryon through the decay chain , where
, , and .
Evidence for observation is based on a signal whose probability of arising from
the estimated background is 6.6 x 10^{-15}, or 7.7 Gaussian standard
deviations. The mass is measured to be (stat.) (syst.) MeV/.Comment: Minor text changes for the second version. Accepted by Phys. Rev.

Search for New Particles Leading to Z+jets Final States in Collisions at TeV
We present the results of a search for new particles that lead to a \Z boson
plus jets in collisions at TeV using the Collider
Detector at Fermilab (CDF II). A data sample with a luminosity of 1.06 \ifb\
collected using \Z boson decays to and is used. We describe a
completely data-based method to predict the dominant background from
standard-model \Z+jet events. This method can be similarly applied to other
analyses requiring background predictions in multi-jet environments, as shown
when validating the method by predicting the background from +jets in \ttbar
production. No significant excess above the background prediction is observed,
and a limit is set using a fourth generation quark model to quantify the
acceptance. Assuming and using a leading-order
calculation of the cross section, quark masses below 268 \gev/c^2
are excluded at 95% confidence level.Comment: To be submitted to PR
First Measurement of the W Boson Mass in Run II of the Tevatron
We present a measurement of the W boson mass using 200/pb of data collected
in pbar p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV by the CDF II detector at Run II of
the Fermilab Tevatron. With a sample of 63964 W -> e nu candidates and 51128 W
-> mu nu candidates, we measure M_W = (80413 +- 34 (stat) +- 34 (syst) = 80413
+- 48) MeV/c^2. This is the most precise single measurement of the W boson mass
to date.Comment: published version in PR
