    The Latest FDA-Approved Pharmaceuticals Containing Fragments of Tailor-Made Amino Acids and Fluorine

    Nowadays, the selective introduction of fluorine into bioactive compounds is a mature strategy in the design of drugs allowing to increase efficiency, biological half-life and bio-absorption. On the other hand, amino acids (AAs) represent one of the most ubiquitious classes of naturally occurring organic compounds, which are found in over 40% of newly marked small-molecule pharmaceutical drugs and medical formulations. The primary goal of this work is to underscore two major trends in the design of modern pharmaceuticals. The first is dealing with the unique structural characteristics provided by the structure of amino acids featuring an abundance of functionality and the presence of a stereogenic center, all of which bodes well for the successful development of targeted bioactivity. The second is related to fine-tuning the desired activity and pharmacokinetics by selective introduction of fluorine. Historically, both trends were developed separately as innovative and prolific approaches in modern drug design.     Leadership in the British civil service: an interpretation

    This article is essentially a polemic. The argument is that when politicians and officials now talk of ‘leadership’ in the British civil service they do not use that word in the way in which it was previously used. In the past leading civil servants, acting in partnership with ministers and within constitutional constraints, exercised leadership in the sense of setting example, inspiring confidence and encouraging loyalty. The loosening of traditional constitutional patterns, the marginalization of senior officials in the policy process and the emergence of business methods as the preferred model for public ­administration have led to a political and administrative environment in which leadership in the British civil service is now about encouraging patterns of behaviour which fit in with these changes. Leadership skills are now about ‘delivery’; they are not about motivation. It is time for politicians, officials and scholars to be open about this

    Metallo-dielectric diamond and zinc-blende photonic crystals

    It is shown that small inclusions of a low absorbing metal can have a dramatic effect on the photonic band structure. In the case of diamond and zinc-blende photonic crystals, several complete photonic band gaps (CPBG's) can open in the spectrum, between the 2nd-3rd, 5th-6th, and 8th-9th bands. Unlike in the purely dielectric case, in the presence of small inclusions of a low absorbing metal the largest CPBG for a moderate dielectric constant (epsilon<=10) turns out to be the 2nd-3rd CPBG. The 2nd-3rd CPBG is the most important CPBG, because it is the most stable against disorder. For a diamond and zinc-blende structure of nonoverlapping dielectric and metallo-dielectric spheres, a CPBG begins to decrease with an increasing dielectric contrast roughly at the point where another CPBG starts to open--a kind of gap competition. A CPBG can even shrink to zero when the dielectric contrast increases further. Metal inclusions have the biggest effect for the dielectric constant 2<=epsilon<=12, which is a typical dielectric constant at near infrared and in the visible for many materials, including semiconductors and polymers. It is shown that one can create a sizeable and robust 2nd-3rd CPBG at near infrared and visible wavelengths even for a photonic crystal which is composed of more than 97% low refractive index materials (n<=1.45, i.e., that of silica glass or a polymer). These findings open the door for any semiconductor and polymer material to be used as genuine building blocks for the creation of photonic crystals with a CPBG and significantly increase the possibilities for experimentalists to realize a sizeable and robust CPBG in the near infrared and in the visible.     Circuit modeling of the transmissivity of stacked two-dimensional metallic meshes

    This paper presents a simple analytical circuit-like model to study the transmission of electromagnetic waves through stacked twodimensional (2-D) conducting meshes. When possible the application of this methodology is very convenient since it provides a straightforward rationale to understand the physical mechanisms behind measured and computed transmission spectra of complex geometries. Also, the disposal of closed-form expressions for the circuit parameters makes the computation effort required by this approach almost negligible. The model is tested by proper comparison with previously obtained numerical and experimental results. The experimental results are explained in terms of the behavior of a finite number of strongly coupled Fabry-PĂ©rot resonators. The number of transmission peaks within a transmission band is equal to the number of resonators.     Spitzer observations of NGC2264: The nature of the disk population

    NGC2264 is a young cluster with a rich circumstellar disk population which makes it an ideal target for studying the evolution of stellar clusters. Our goal is to study its star formation history and to analyse the primordial disk evolution of its members. The study presented is based on data obtained with Spitzer IRAC and MIPS, combined with deep NIR ground-based FLAMINGOS imaging and previously published optical data. We build NIR dust extinction maps of the molecular cloud associated with the cluster, and determine it to have a mass of 2.1x10^3Msun above an Av of 7mag. Using a differential K_s-band luminosity function of the cluster, we estimate the size of its population to be 1436±\pm242 members. The star formation efficiency is ~25%. We identify the disk population: (i) optically thick inner disks, (ii) anaemic inner disks, and (iii) disks with inner holes, or transition disks. We analyse the spatial distribution of these sources and find that sources with thick disks segregate into sub-clusterings, whereas sources with anaemic disks do not. Furthermore, sources with anaemic disks are found to be unembedded (Av<3mag), whereas the clustered sources with thick disks are still embedded within the parental cloud. NGC2264 has undergone more than one star-forming event, where the anaemic and extincted thick disk population appear to have formed in separate episodes. We also find tentative evidence of triggered star-formation in the Fox Fur Nebula. In terms of disk evolution, our findings support the emerging disk evolution paradigm of two distinct evolutionary paths for primordial optically thick disks: a homologous one where the disk emission decreases uniformly at NIR and MIR wavelengths, and a radially differential one where the emission from the inner region of the disk decreases more rapidly than from the outer region (forming transition disks).Comment: accepted for publishing in A&

    Dispersive Approach to Semileptonic Form-Factors in Heavy-to-Light Meson Decays

    We study the semileptonic decays of heavy mesons into light pseudoscalars by making use of dispersion relations. Constraints from heavy quark symmetry, chiral symmetry and perturbative QCD are implemented into a dispersive model for the form-factors. Large deviations from B∗B^*-pole dominance are observed in B→πℓΜB\to\pi\ell\nu. We discuss the model prediction for this mode and its possible impact on the extraction of ∣Vub∣|V_{ub}|.Comment: 30 pages, including 5 Postcript figure
