An approximate solution to the time-dependent density functional theory
(TDDFT) response equations for finite systems is developed, yielding
corrections to the single-pole approximation. These explain why allowed
Kohn-Sham transition frequencies and oscillator strengths are usually good
approximations to the true values, and why sometimes they are not. The
approximation yields simple expressions for G\"orling-Levy perturbation theory
results, and a method for estimating expectation values of the unknown

Improved Squeaky Wheel Optimisation for Driver Scheduling
This paper presents a technique called Improved Squeaky Wheel Optimisation
for driver scheduling problems. It improves the original Squeaky Wheel
Optimisations effectiveness and execution speed by incorporating two additional
steps of Selection and Mutation which implement evolution within a single
solution. In the ISWO, a cycle of
Analysis-Selection-Mutation-Prioritization-Construction continues until
stopping conditions are reached. The Analysis step first computes the fitness
of a current solution to identify troublesome components. The Selection step
then discards these troublesome components probabilistically by using the
fitness measure, and the Mutation step follows to further discard a small
number of components at random. After the above steps, an input solution
becomes partial and thus the resulting partial solution needs to be repaired.
The repair is carried out by using the Prioritization step to first produce
priorities that determine an order by which the following Construction step
then schedules the remaining components. Therefore, the optimisation in the
ISWO is achieved by solution disruption, iterative improvement and an iterative
constructive repair process performed. Encouraging experimental results are
reported
Time-dependent density functional theory: Past, present, and future
Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) is presently enjoying
enormous popularity in quantum chemistry, as a useful tool for extracting
electronic excited state energies. This article discusses how TDDFT is much
broader in scope, and yields predictions for many more properties. We discuss
some of the challenges involved in making accurate predictions for these

Parasuicide and general practice: a pilot study
General Practitioners from Cork City and its environs were sent a questionnaire regarding their experience of parasuicide in the previous twelve months. Replies were received from 133 of the 185 GPs. 189 individuals, accounting for 212 episodes of parasuicide, were seen by 78 doctors, indicating a lower level of repetition than that found in hospital-referred cases. Almost a third of doctors saw no cases, just over one fifth saw one episode and the same proportion dealt with two. A small number of general practitioners saw many cases. Regarding management, 128 (60%) were referred to Casualty, 31 of whom were also referred for psychiatric care. Thirty percent were referred directly for psychiatric care. While only fourteen were retained within general practice without referral, 40% of the GPs felt that, ideally, acts of parasuicide should be retained with more specialised advice being obtained. Furthermore, 88.1% believed that management of parasuicide should form part of an integral part of post-graduate or continued general practitioner medical training. Clearly, GPs are willing to play a more active role in the management of parasuicide
Isolation of polymorphic microsatellites in the stemless thistle (Cirsium acaule) and their utility in other Cirsium species
The genus Cirsium includes species with both widespread and restricted geographical distributions, several of which are serious weeds. Nine polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated from the stemless thistle Cirsium acaule. Eight were polymorphic in C. acaule, six in C. arvense and seven in C. heterophyllum. One locus monomorphic in C. acaule showed polymorphism in C. heterophyllum. The mean number of alleles per locus was 4.1 in C. acaule, 6.2 in C. arvense and 2.9 in C. heterophyllum. These nine loci were also amplified in C. eriophorum and C. vulgare, suggesting that these markers may be of use throughout the genus
A time predefined variable depth search for nurse rostering
This paper presents a variable depth search for the nurse rostering problem. The algorithm works by chaining together single neighbourhood swaps into more effective compound moves. It achieves this by using heuristics to decide whether to continue extending a chain and which candidates to examine as the next potential link in the chain. Because end users vary in how long they are willing to wait for solutions, a particular goal of this research was to create an algorithm that accepts a user specified computational time limit and uses it effectively. When compared against previously published approaches the results show that the algorithm is very competitive
Identification of the Beutler-Fano formula in eigenphase shifts and eigentime delays near a resonance
Eigenphase shifts and eigentime delays near a resonance for a system of one
discrete state and two continua are shown to be functionals of the Beutler-
Fano formulas using appropriate dimensionless energy units and line profile
indices. Parameters responsible for the avoided crossing of eigenphase shifts
and eigentime delays are identified. Similarly, parameters responsible for the
eigentime delays due to a frame change are identified. With the help of new
parameters, an analogy with the spin model is pursued for the S matrix and time
delay matrix. The time delay matrix is shown to comprise three terms, one due
to resonance, one due to a avoided crossing interaction, and one due to a frame
change. It is found that the squared sum of time delays due to the avoided

Calculation of the Density of States Using Discrete Variable Representation and Toeplitz Matrices
A direct and exact method for calculating the density of states for systems
with localized potentials is presented. The method is based on explicit
inversion of the operator . The operator is written in the discrete
variable representation of the Hamiltonian, and the Toeplitz property of the
asymptotic part of the obtained {\it infinite} matrix is used. Thus, the
problem is reduced to the inversion of a {\it finite} matrix
Total synthesis and biological evaluation of the tetramic acid based natural product harzianic acid and its stereoisomers
Financial support for this project was provided by Cancer Research UK (Grant No. C21383/A6950)The bioactive natural product harzianic acid was prepared for the first time in just six steps (longest linear sequence) with an overall yield of 22%. The identification of conditions to telescope amide bond formation and a Lacey-Dieckmann reaction into one pot proved important. The three stereoisomers of harzianic acid were also prepared, providing material for comparison of their biological activity. While all of the isomers promoted root growth, improved antifungal activity was unexpectedly associated with isomers in the enantiomeric series opposite that of harzianic acid.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
