    Dynamical quenching and annealing in self-organization multiagent models

    We study the dynamics of a generalized Minority Game (GMG) and of the Bar Attendance Model (BAM) in which a number of agents self-organize to match an attendance that is fixed externally as a control parameter. We compare the usual dynamics used for the Minority Game with one for the BAM that makes a better use of the available information. We study the asymptotic states reached in both frameworks. We show that states that can be assimilated to either thermodynamic equilibrium or quenched configurations can appear in both models, but with different settings. We discuss the relevance of the parameter GG that measures the value of the prize for winning in units of the fine for losing. We also provide an annealing protocol by which the quenched configurations of the GMG can progressively be modified to reach an asymptotic equlibrium state that coincides with the one obtained with the BAM.Comment: around 20 pages, 10 figure

    Thermal treatment of the minority game

    We study a cost function for the aggregate behavior of all the agents involved in the Minority Game (MG) or the Bar Attendance Model (BAM). The cost function allows to define a deterministic, synchronous dynamics that yields results that have the main relevant features than those of the probabilistic, sequential dynamics used for the MG or the BAM. We define a temperature through a Langevin approach in terms of the fluctuations of the average attendance. We prove that the cost function is an extensive quantity that can play the role of an internal energy of the many agent system while the temperature so defined is an intensive parameter. We compare the results of the thermal perturbation to the deterministic dynamics and prove that they agree with those obtained with the MG or BAM in the limit of very low temperature.Comment: 9 pages in PRE format, 6 figure

    Development of computer controls for a goniophotometer

The Heliodome system developed in the Building Technology department is a new type of goniophotometer for analyzing the spectral and angular properties of these materials. The Heliodome system relies on two cameras to transmit images to a user interface in order to provide immediate feedback to users. A filter wheel that divides the spectrum of visible and infrared light into separate wavebands for performing spectral analysis also needs to be integrated into the system to optimize the operation of the system by one user. The subject of this thesis is a control system that unifies the operation of the heliodome system. A wireless system has been developed to enable communication between the main user interface and the system camera without restricting the system's freedom of motion. Also, motors were selected and added to the filter wheel system to automate the filter changes and eliminate inaccuracy in the system. The modifications will enable the separate components of the Heliodome system to operate cohesively and allow architecture students to control the separate components from a single interface.by Javier Burgos.S.B

    SOLUTION OF 1D AND 2D POISSON'S EQUATION BY USING WAVELET SCALING FUNCTIONS

    The use of multiresolution techniques and wavelets has become increasingly popular in the development of numerical schemes for the solution of partial differential equations (PDEs). Therefore, the use of wavelet scaling functions as a basis in computational analysis holds some promise due to their compact support, orthogonality and localization properties. Daubechies and Deslauriers-Dubuc functions have been successfully used as basis functions in several schemes like the Wavelet- Galerkin Method (WGM) and the Wavelet Finite Element Method (WFEM). Another possible advantage of their use is the fact that the calculation of integrals of inner products of wavelet scaling functions and their derivatives can be made by solving a linear system of equations, thus avoiding the problem of using approximations by some numerical method. These inner products were defined as connection coefficients and they are employed in the calculation of stiffness matrices and load vectors. In this work, some mathematical foundations regarding wavelet scaling functions, their derivatives and connection coefficients are reviewed. A scheme based on the Galerkin Method is proposed for the direct solution of Poisson's equation (potential problems) in a meshless formulation using interpolating wavelet scaling functions (Interpolets). The applicability of the proposed method and some convergence issues are illustrated by means of a few examples

    Phylogeny of the order Zoantharia (Anthozoa, Hexacorallia) based on the mitochondrial ribosomal genes

    Zoantharia (or Zoanthidea) is the third largest order of Hexacorallia, characterised by two rows of tentacles, one siphonoglyph and a colonial way of life. Current systematics of Zoantharia is based exclusively on morphology and follows the traditional division of the group into the two suborders Brachycnemina and Macrocnemina, each comprising several poorly defined genera and species. To resolve the phylogenetic relationships among Zoantharia, we have analysed the sequences of mitochondrial 16S and 12S rRNA genes obtained from 24 specimens, representing two suborders and eight genera. In view of our data, Brachycnemina appears as a monophyletic group diverging within the paraphyletic Macrocnemina. The macrocnemic genus Epizoanthus branches as the sister group to all other Zoantharia that are sampled. All examined genera are monophyletic, except Parazoanthus, which comprises several independently branching clades and individual sequences. Among Parazoanthus, some groups of species can be defined by particular insertion/deletion patterns in the DNA sequences. All these clades show specificity to a particular type of substrate such as sponges or hydrozoans. Substrate specificity is also observed in zoantharians living on gorgonians or anthipatharians, as in the genus Savalia (Gerardia). If confirmed by further studies, the substrate specificity could be used as reliable character for taxonomic identification of some Macrocnemin

    El status actual de las ecoescuelas: el caso de la provincia de Granada (España)

    La preocupación progresiva por la sostenibilidad de las organizaciones sociales representa hoy un factor de calidad de la madurez institucional de un país. Las ecoauditorías ambientales son un ejemplo de buenas prácticas ambientales en los centros educativos. En esta comunicación se analiza la aplicación de estas metodologías al campo de la planificación y gestión escolar. La implantación del Programa a 21 ecoescuelas de la Provincia de Granada se evalúa mediante un diseño de investigación cualitativa con estudio de casos, entrevistas y registros fotográficos. Los resultados se interpretan a través de unas tipologías previas de ecoescuelas -señalando debilidades y fortalezas-, analizando el liderazgo de los coordinadores de los programas y marcando estrategias de futuro
