    A study of the interacting binary V 393 Scorpii

    We present high resolution J-band spectroscopy of V 393 Sco obtained with the CRIRES at the ESO Paranal Observatory along with a discussion of archival IUE spectra and published broad band magnitudes. The best fit to the spectral energy distribution outside eclipse gives T1T_{1}= 19000 ±\pm 500 KK for the gainer, T2T_{2}= 7250 ±\pm 300 KK for the donor, E(B−V)E(B-V)= 0.13 ±\pm 0.02 mag. and a distance of dd= 523 ±\pm 60 pc, although circumstellar material was not considered in the fit. We argue that V 393 Sco is not a member of the open cluster M7. The shape of the He I 1083 nm line shows orbital modulations that can be interpreted in terms of an optically thick pseudo-photosphere mimicking a hot B-type star and relatively large equatorial mass loss through the Lagrangian L3 point during long cycle minimum. IUE spectra show several (usually asymmetric) absorption lines from highly ionized metals and a narrow Lα\alpha emission core on a broad absorption profile. The overall behavior of these lines suggests the existence of a wind at intermediate latitudes. From the analysis of the radial velocities we find M2/M1M_{2}/M_{1}= 0.24 ±\pm 0.02 and a mass function of ff= 4.76 ±\pm 0.24 M⊙\odot.     Implementation lessons learnt when trialling palliative care interventions in the intensive care unit: relationships between determinants, implementation strategies, and models of delivery-a systematic review protocol

    BACKGROUND: Heterogeneity amongst palliative care interventions in the intensive care unit (ICU) and their outcomes has meant that, even when found to be effective, translation of evidence into practice is hindered. Previous evidence reviews have suggested that the field of ICU-based palliative care would benefit from well-designed, targeted interventions, with explicit knowledge translation research demonstrating valid implementation strategies. Reviewing effectiveness studies alongside process evaluations for these interventions will give insight into the implementation barriers or constraints identified, and the implementation strategies adopted. METHODS: A systematic review to identify and synthesise knowledge on how models of integrating palliative care into the ICU have been implemented and provide critical recommendations for successful future development and implementation of complex interventions in the field. The search will be carried out using MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, CINAHL, and PsycINFO. The search strategy will combine terms related to palliative care, intensive care, and implementation. Only full-text articles will be considered and conference abstracts excluded. There will be no date or language restrictions. The Implementation Research Logic Model will be used as a framework for synthesis. Findings will be reported following the Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. DISCUSSION: This review will provide understanding of implementation facilitators, barriers, and strategies, when employing palliative care interventions within the ICU. This will provide valuable recommendations for successful future development of complex interventions using implementation frameworks or theories. This can increase the potential for sustained change in practice, reduce heterogeneity in interventions, and therefore help produce measurable and comparable outcomes.     A search for p-modes and other variability in the binary system 85 Pegasi using MOST photometry

    Context: Asteroseismology has great potential for the study of metal-poor stars due to its sensitivity to determine stellar ages. Aims: Our goal was to detect p-mode oscillations in the metal-poor sub-dwarf 85 Peg A and to search for other variability on longer timescales. Methods: We have obtained continuous high-precision photometry of the binary system 85 Pegasi with the MOST space telescope in two seasons (2005 & 2007). Furthermore, we redetermined vsini for 85 Peg A using high resolution spectra obtained through the ESO archive, and used photometric spot modeling to interpret long periodic variations. Results: Our frequency analysis yields no convincing evidence for p-modes significantly above a noise level of 4 ppm. Using simulated p-mode patterns we provide upper RMS amplitude limits for 85 Peg A. The light curve shows evidence for variability with a period of about 11 d and this periodicity is also seen in the follow up run in 2007; however, as different methods to remove instrumental trends in the 2005 run yield vastly different results, the exact shape and periodicity of the 2005 variability remain uncertain. Our re-determined vsini value for 85 Peg A is comparable to previous studies and we provide realistic uncertainties for this parameter. Using these values in combination with simple photometric spot models we are able to reconstruct the observed variations. Conclusions: The null-detection of p-modes in 85 Peg A is consistent with theoretical values for pulsation amplitudes in this star. The detected long-periodic variation must await confirmation by further observations with similar or better precision and long-term stability. If the 11 d periodicity is real, rotational modulation of surface features on one of the components is the most likely explanation.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    Serum miRNAs as potential biomarkers for the bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome after lung transplantation

    Lung transplantation (LTx) is the last treatment for patients suffering from end-stage lung diseases. Survival post-LTx is hampered by the development of the bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) and diagnosis is often late. Given the urgent clinical need to recognize BOS patients at an early stage, we analyzed circulating miRNAs to identify possible stratification markers for BOS development post-transplantation. Therefore, pro-fibrotic (miR-21, miR-155), anti-fibrotic (miR-29a) and fibrosis-unrelated (miR-103, miR-191) miRNAs were analyzed in serum of end-stage lung disease patients and during LTx follow-up.Significant elevated levels of serum miRNAs were observed for all investigated miRNAs in both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and interstitial lung disease patients compared to healthy controls. The same miRNAs were also significantly increased in the serum of BOS + vs. BOS - patients. Most importantly, miR-21, miR-29a, miR-103, and miR-191 levels were significantly higher in BOS + patients prior to clinical BOS diagnosis.We demonstrated that a selected group of miRNAs investigated is elevated in end-stage lung disease and BOS + patients, prior to clinical BOS diagnosis. Even if further research is expedient on the prognostic value of circulating miRNAs in BOS and lung conditions in general, these results strongly suggest that circulating miRNAs could be used as potential biomarkers for BOS development

    Orbital period changes and the higher-order multiplicity fraction amongst SuperWASP eclipsing binaries

    Orbital period changes of binary stars may be caused by the presence of a third massive body in the system. Here we have searched the archive of the Wide Angle Search for Planets (SuperWASP) project for evidence of period variations in 13 927 eclipsing binary candidates. Sinusoidal period changes, strongly suggestive of third bodies, were detected in 2% of cases; however, linear period changes were observed in a further 22% of systems. We argue on distributional grounds that the majority of these apparently linear changes are likely to reflect longer-term sinusoidal period variations caused by third bodies, and thus estimate a higher-order multiplicity fraction of 24% for SuperWASP binaries, in good agreement with other recent figures for the fraction of triple systems amongst binary stars in general

    High resolution mapping of a novel late blight resistance gene Rpi-avll, from the wild Bolivian species Solanum avilesii

    Both Mexico and South America are rich in Solanum species that might be valuable sources of resistance (R) genes to late blight (Phytophthora infestans). Here, we focus on an R gene present in the diploid Bolivian species S. avilesii. The genotype carrying the R gene was resistant to eight out of 10 Phytophthora isolates of various provenances. The identification of a resistant phenotype and the generation of a segregating population allowed the mapping of a single dominant R gene, Rpi-avl1, which is located in an R gene cluster on chromosome 11. This R gene cluster is considered as an R gene “hot spot”, containing R genes to at least five different pathogens. High resolution mapping of the Rpi-avl1 gene revealed a marker co-segregating in 3890 F1 individuals, which may be used for marker assisted selection in breeding programs and for further cloning of Rpi-avl

    Exploring pre-main sequence variables of ONC: The new variables

    Since 2004, we have been engaged in a long-term observing program to monitor young stellar objects in the Orion Nebula Cluster. We have collected about two thousands frames in V, R, and I broad-band filters on more than two hundred nights distributed over five consecutive observing seasons. The high-quality and time-extended photometric data give us an opportunity to address various phenomena associated with young stars. The prime motivations of this project are i) to explore various manifestations of stellar magnetic activity in very young low-mass stars; ii) to search for new pre-main sequence eclipsing binaries; and iii) to look for any EXor and FUor like transient activities associated with YSOs. Since this is the first paper on this program, we give a detailed description of the science drivers, the observation and the data reduction strategies as well. In addition to these, we also present a large number of new periodic variables detected from our first five years of time-series photometric data. Our study reveals that about 72% of CTTS in our FoV are periodic, whereas, the percentage of periodic WTTS is just 32%. This indicates that inhomogeneities patterns on the surface of CTTS of the ONC stars are much more stable than on WTTS. From our multi-year monitoring campaign we found that the photometric surveys based on single-season are incapable of identifying all periodic variables. And any study on evolution of angular momentum based on single-season surveys must be carried out with caution.Comment: Accepted for publication by MNRAS, 26 pages, 17 figures, 6 table

    New Precision Orbits of Bright Double-Lined Spectroscopic Binaries. I: RR Lyncis, 12 Bootis, and HR 6169

    Radial velocities from the 2.1 m telescope at McDonald Observatory supplemented with radial velocities from the coude' feed telescope at KPNO provide new precise orbits for the double-lined spectroscopic binaries RR Lyn (A3/A8/A6), 12 Boo (F8IV), and HR 6169 (A2V). We derive orbital dimensions and minimum masses with accuracies of 0.06 to 0.9 %. The three systems, which have V magnitudes of 5.54, 4.83, and 6.42, respectively, are all sufficiently bright that they are easily within the grasp of modern optical interferometers and so afford the prospect, when our spectroscopic observations are complemented by interferometric observations, of fully-determined orbits, precise masses, and distances. In the case of RR Lyn, which is also a detached eclipsing binary with a well-determined orbital inclination, we are able to determine the semimajor axis of the relative orbit, a = 29.32 +/- 0.04 Rsun, primary and secondary radii of 2.57 +/- 0.02 Rsun and 1.59 +/- 0.03 Rsun, respectively; and primary and secondary masses of 1.927 +/- 0.008 Msun and 1.507 +/- 0.004 Msun, respectively. Comparison of our new systemic velocity determination, gamma = -12.03 +/- 0.04 km/s, with an earlier one, gamma = -11.61 +/- 0.30 km/s, shows no evidence of any change in the systemic velocity in the 40 years separating the two measurements, a null result that neither confirms nor contradicts the presence of the low-mass third component proposed by Khaliullin & Khaliullina (2002). Our spectroscopic orbit of 12 Boo is more precise that that of Boden et al. (2005), but confirms their results about this system. Our analysis of HR 6169 has produced a major improvement in its orbital elements. The minimum masses of the primary and secondary are 2.20 +/- 0.01 and 1.64 +/- 0.02 Msun, respectively.Comment: To appear in the May A

    Low-mass and sub-stellar eclipsing binaries in stellar clusters

    We highlight the importance of eclipsing double-line binaries in our understanding on star formation and evolution. We review the recent discoveries of low-mass and sub-stellar eclipsing binaries belonging to star-forming regions, open clusters, and globular clusters identified by ground-based surveys and space missions with high-resolution spectroscopic follow-up. These discoveries provide benchmark systems with known distances, metallicities, and ages to calibrate masses and radii predicted by state-of-the-art evolutionary models to a few percent. We report their density and discuss current limitations on the accuracy of the physical parameters. We discuss future opportunities and highlight future guidelines to fill gaps in age and metallicity to improve further our knowledge of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs.Comment: 30 pages, 5 figures, no table.
