    Hydroxymethylated Resorcinol Coupling Agent for Enhanced Durability of Bisphenol-A Epoxy Bonds to Sitka Spruce

    Epoxy adhesives can develop bonds to wood that are as strong as the wood itself, but only if the bonds remain dry. Once exposed to repeated water soaking and severe stresses from drying, epoxy bonds delaminate and fail to meet requirements for structural wood adhesives intended for exterior exposure. A new hydroxymethylated resorcinol (HMR) coupling agent, applied to lumber surfaces before bonding, chemically couples both epoxy adhesive and lignocellulosics of wood to produce bonds to Sitka spruce that are extraordinarily resistant to delamination. In this report, we explain and demonstrate the nature of this coupling agent and the mechanism by which it enhances the durability of bonds of a bisphenol-A epoxy adhesive to wood. When diluted with benzyl alcohol, an epoxy adhesive developed structural bonds in HMR-primed lumber laminates that met the 5% maximum delamination requirement of ASTM Specification D 2559.     Young Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): The impact of secondary tasks on driving performance

    Abstract Objective: Young adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are at higher risk for being involved in automobile crashes. Driving simulators have been used in a variety of contexts to categorize a number of deficits in performance exhibited by drivers with ADHD. Recent research focuses on non-distracted driving. However, in-vehicle infotainment and communications systems are known to further contribute to a driver's risk of collision. This paper explores the impact of secondary tasks on the driving performance of individuals with and without ADHD. Methods: Data are drawn from two portions of a validated driving simulation that represent the periods before, during and after participation in a secondary task. Secondary tasks include a cellular phone task administered in a high stimulus setting and a working memory task presented during low stimulus driving. Data from drivers with and without ADHD was compared. Results: When compared to the control group, drivers with ADHD have more difficulty performing the cellular telephone task but fail to modulate their driving in a way that compromises safety. Highway driving performance is impaired in individuals with ADHD. The degree of impairment increases while participating in a working memory task. Conclusions: The results suggest in low stimulus driving, attention to the secondary task substantially impact the performance of ADHD drivers

    Evolution of the Luminosity Function and Colors of Galaxies in a Lambda-CDM Universe

    The luminosity function of galaxies is derived from a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation of a Lambda cold dark matter (CDM) universe with the aid of a stellar population synthesis model. At z=0, the resulting B band luminosity function has a flat faint end slope of \alpha \approx -1.15 with the characteristic luminosity and the normalization in a fair agreement with observations, while the dark matter halo mass function is steep with a slope of \alpha \approx -2. The colour distribution of galaxies also agrees well with local observations. We also discuss the evolution of the luminosity function, and the colour distribution of galaxies from z=0 to 5. A large evolution of the characteristic mass in the stellar mass function due to number evolution is compensated by luminosity evolution; the characteristic luminosity increases only by 0.8 mag from z=0 to 2, and then declines towards higher redshift, while the B band luminosity density continues to increase from z=0 to 5 (but only slowly at z>3).Comment: 6 pages, including 4 figures, mn2e style.     Vitamin D and the risk of dementia and Alzheimer disease

    OBJECTIVE: To determine whether low vitamin D concentrations are associated with an increased risk of incident all-cause dementia and Alzheimer disease. METHODS: One thousand six hundred fifty-eight elderly ambulatory adults free from dementia, cardiovascular disease, and stroke who participated in the US population-based Cardiovascular Health Study between 1992-1993 and 1999 were included. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations were determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry from blood samples collected in 1992-1993. Incident all-cause dementia and Alzheimer disease status were assessed during follow-up using National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke/Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association criteria. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up of 5.6 years, 171 participants developed all-cause dementia, including 102 cases of Alzheimer disease. Using Cox proportional hazards models, the multivariate adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence interval [CI]) for incident all-cause dementia in participants who were severely 25(OH)D deficient (<25 nmol/L) and deficient (≥25 to <50 nmol/L) were 2.25 (95% CI: 1.23-4.13) and 1.53 (95% CI: 1.06-2.21) compared to participants with sufficient concentrations (≥50 nmol/L). The multivariate adjusted hazard ratios for incident Alzheimer disease in participants who were severely 25(OH)D deficient and deficient compared to participants with sufficient concentrations were 2.22 (95% CI: 1.02-4.83) and 1.69 (95% CI: 1.06-2.69). In multivariate adjusted penalized smoothing spline plots, the risk of all-cause dementia and Alzheimer disease markedly increased below a threshold of 50 nmol/L. CONCLUSION: Our results confirm that vitamin D deficiency is associated with a substantially increased risk of all-cause dementia and Alzheimer disease.     The Generation of Magnetic Fields and X-ray Observations

    We show that strong magnetic fields can be generated at shock waves associated with formation of galaxies or clusters of galaxies by the Weibel instability, an instability in collisionless plasmas. The estimated strength of the magnetic field generated through this mechanism is close to the order of values observed in galaxies or clusters of galaxies at present, which indicates that strong amplification of magnetic fields after formation of galaxies or clusters of galaxies is not required. This mechanism could have worked even at a redshift of ~10, and therefore the generated magnetic fields may have affected the formation of stars at the early universe. This model will be confirmed by future observations of nearby clusters of galaxies.     OpenFermion: The Electronic Structure Package for Quantum Computers

    Quantum simulation of chemistry and materials is predicted to be an important application for both near-term and fault-tolerant quantum devices. However, at present, developing and studying algorithms for these problems can be difficult due to the prohibitive amount of domain knowledge required in both the area of chemistry and quantum algorithms. To help bridge this gap and open the field to more researchers, we have developed the OpenFermion software package (www.openfermion.org). OpenFermion is an open-source software library written largely in Python under an Apache 2.0 license, aimed at enabling the simulation of fermionic models and quantum chemistry problems on quantum hardware. Beginning with an interface to common electronic structure packages, it simplifies the translation between a molecular specification and a quantum circuit for solving or studying the electronic structure problem on a quantum computer, minimizing the amount of domain expertise required to enter the field. The package is designed to be extensible and robust, maintaining high software standards in documentation and testing. This release paper outlines the key motivations behind design choices in OpenFermion and discusses some basic OpenFermion functionality which we believe will aid the community in the development of better quantum algorithms and tools for this exciting area of research.Comment: 22 page

    Escherichia coli mar and acrAB Mutants Display No Tolerance to Simple Alcohols

    The inducible Mar phenotype of Escherichia coli is associated with increased tolerance to multiple hydrophobic antibiotics as well as some highly hydrophobic organic solvents such as cyclohexane, mediated mainly through the AcrAB/TolC efflux system. The influence of water miscible alcohols ethanol and 1-propanol on a Mar constitutive mutant and a mar deletion mutant of E. coli K-12, as well as the corresponding strains carrying the additional acrAB deletion, was investigated. In contrast to hydrophobic solvents, all strains were killed in exponential phase by 1-propanol and ethanol at rates comparable to the parent strain. Thus, the Mar phenotype does not protect E. coli from killing by these more polar solvents. Surprisingly, AcrAB does not contribute to an increased alcohol tolerance. In addition, sodium salicylate, at concentrations known to induce the mar operon, was unable to increase 1-propanol or ethanol tolerance. Rather, the toxicity of both solvents was increased in the presence of sodium salicylate. Collectively, the results imply that the resilience of E. coli to water miscible alcohols, in contrast to more hydrophobic solvents, does not depend upon the AcrAB/TolC efflux system, and suggests a lower limit for substrate molecular size and functionality. Implications for the application of microbiological systems in environments containing high contents of water miscible organic solvents, e.g., phage display screening, are discussed
