    Higher-Power Coherent and Squeezed States

    Get PDF
A closed form expression for the higher-power coherent states (eigenstates of aja^{j}) is given. The cases j=3,4 are discussed in detail, including the time-evolution of the probability densities. These are compared to the case j=2, the even- and odd-coherent states. We give the extensions to the "effective" displacement-operator, higher-power squeezed states and to the ladder-operator/minimum-uncertainty, higher-power squeezed states. The properties of all these states are discussed.Comment: 23 pages including 9 figures. To be published in Optics Communication

The Inquiry Learning Model as an Approach to Mathematics Instruction

    Get PDF
Since current approaches to mathematical instruction fall short of the goals of NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) research was conducted in a small rural school district in the northwest United States evaluating inquiry based instruction. To complete the study two high school geometry classes were taught area formulation using a traditional lecture based approach to instruction. A third geometry class was taught area formulation utilizing inquiry-based instructional methods. Students in both groups took both a pre-test and post-test, filled out a questionnaire, and participated in a project designed to test their applications of mathematical understanding. Results indicated that inquiry-based instructional methods had a significant effect on students’ ability to solve decontextualized mathematical problems, students’ retention of the mathematics, and improved students’ attitudes about the mathematics in which they were engaged

Effectiveness of psychotherapy for traumatized refugees without a secure residency status

    Get PDF
Purpose - Psychotherapy with refugees in the western world is quite often complicated because many refugees live without a secure residency status. It is difficult to have a structured therapeutic perspective when doing psychotherapy with these patients because of their fears and daily problems. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate psychotherapy results for 190 traumatized refugees (40 per cent without a secure residency). Design/methodology/approach - To measure the outcome of the psychotherapies the paper used HAM-D and CGI at baseline and at the end of the therapeutic process. Findings - The study shows that, although refugees without a legal status had more depressive symptoms and lived with much higher psychosocial stress, psychotherapy was as effective as for traumatized refugees with a legal status. Research limitations/implications - Heterogeneity, convenience sampling and retrospective completion of some of the baseline assessments. Practical implications - Psychotherapeutic treatment of refugees has a clear positive effect on them and should be applied even in those without legal residence status in the host country. Originality/value - This is the first study assessing the effectiveness of daily practice psychotherapy for refugees with and without a legal status in a comparative fashion

It is expounded thesises for the new theory about gravitational differentiation of title rocky particles inside rocky environment. On this basis it is forecasted formation of gold flour placers in the deltas of Don, Dnieper, Dniester and Danube, and also on the adjoining part of the Azov-Black Sea shelf. There are introduced the evidence of biogenetical and chemogenetical genesis of some part of the gold flour. It is represented the prognosical resources of three gold placers which was discovered by author on the Black Sea shelf only due to using his device “Goverla”. They are amount to 25 ton of gold flour

Intermediated communication by interpreters in psychotherapy with traumatized refugees

    Get PDF
Immigrants in need of psychotherapy are often confronted with the fact that there is no psychotherapist available with whom they can proceed in a common language understood well by both. In some cases psychotherapy with communication intermediated by interpreters is offered. This study compares the outcome of 190 individual psychotherapies with refugees with post-traumatic disorders, half of them with the help of interpreters, the other half without. The results show that psychotherapies with the help of interpreters were as effective as those without, even though the psychosocial conditions (such as employment, training, foreign language proficiency and social network) for those patients who needed interpreters were tougher. We conclude that psychotherapy with the help of an interpreter should not be considered the poorer alternative

Decoherence of a Pointer by a Gas Reservoir

We study the effect of the environment on the process of the measurement of a state of a microscopic spin half system. The measuring apparatus is a heavy particle, whose center of mass coordinates can be considered at the end of the measurement as approximately classical, and thus can be used as a pointer. The state of the pointer, which is the result of its interaction with the spin, is transformed into a mixed state by the coupling of the pointer to the environment. The environment is considered to be a gas reservoir, whose particles interact with the pointer. This results in a Fokker-Planck equation for the reduced density matrix of the pointer. The solution of the equation shows that the quantum coherences, which are characteristic to the entangled state between the probabilities to find the pointer in one of two positions, decays exponentially fast in time. We calculate the exponential decay function of this decoherence effect, and express it in terms of the parameters of the model.Comment: 41 pages, 1 figur

Directional Sinogram Inpainting for Limited Angle Tomography

    Get PDF
In this paper we propose a new joint model for the reconstruction of tomography data under limited angle sampling regimes. In many applications of Tomography, e.g. Electron Microscopy and Mammography, physical limitations on acquisition lead to regions of data which cannot be sampled. Depending on the severity of the restriction, reconstructions can contain severe, characteristic, artefacts. Our model aims to address these artefacts by inpainting the missing data simultaneously with the reconstruction. Numerically, this problem naturally evolves to require the minimisation of a non-convex and non-smooth functional so we review recent work in this topic and extend results to fit an alternating (block) descent framework. \oldtext{We illustrate the effectiveness of this approach with numerical experiments on two synthetic datasets and one Electron Microscopy dataset.} \newtext{We perform numerical experiments on two synthetic datasets and one Electron Microscopy dataset. Our results show consistently that the joint inpainting and reconstruction framework can recover cleaner and more accurate structural information than the current state of the art methods

Sharpening the predictions of big-bang nucleosynthesis

Motivated by the recent measurement of the primeval abundance of deuterium, we re-examine the nuclear inputs to big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). Using Monte-Carlo realization of the nuclear cross-section data to directly estimate the theoretical uncertainties for the yields of D, 3-He and 7-Li, we show that previous estimates were a factor of 2 too large. We sharpen the BBN determination of the baryon density based upon deuterium, rho_B = (3.6 +/- 0.4) * 10^{-31} g/cm^3 (Omega_B h^2 = 0.019 +/- 0.0024), which leads to a predicted 4-He abundance, Y_P = 0.246 +/- 0.0014 and a stringent limit to the equivalent number of light neutrino species: N_nu < 3.20 (all at 95% cl). The predicted 7-Li abundance, 7-Li/H = (3.5 + 1.1 - 0.9) * 10^{-10}, is higher than that observed in pop II stars, (1.7 +/- 0.3) * 10^{-10} (both, 95% cl). We identify key reactions and the energies where further work is needed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures (epsfig), REVTeX; submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
