Predicting university performance in psychology: the role of previous performance and discipline-specific knowledge
Recent initiatives to enhance retention and widen participation ensure it is crucial to understand the factors that predict students' performance during their undergraduate degree. The present research used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to test three separate models that examined the extent to which British Psychology students' A-level entry qualifications predicted: (1) their performance in years 1-3 of their Psychology degree, and (2) their overall degree performance. Students' overall A-level entry qualifications positively predicted performance during their first year and overall degree performance, but negatively predicted their performance during their third year. Additionally, and more specifically, students' A-level entry qualifications in Psychology positively predicted performance in the first year only. Such findings have implications for admissions tutors, as well as for students who have not studied Psychology before but who are considering applying to do so at university

Clusters in weighted macroeconomic networks : the EU case. Introducing the overlapping index of GDP/capita fluctuation correlations
GDP/capita correlations are investigated in various time windows (TW), for
the time interval 1990-2005. The target group of countries is the set of 25 EU
members, 15 till 2004 plus the 10 countries which joined EU later on. The
TW-means of the statistical correlation coefficients are taken as the weights
(links) of a fully connected network having the countries as nodes. Thereafter
we define and introduce the overlapping index of weighted network nodes. A
cluster structure of EU countries is derived from the statistically relevant
eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the adjacency matrix. This may be considered to
yield some information about the structure, stability and evolution of the EU
country clusters in a macroeconomic sense.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, 17 references, submitted to Physica A;

Accessing elite nurses for research: reflections on the theoretical and practical issues of telephone interviewing
Elite groups are interesting as they frequently are powerful (in terms of position, knowledge and influence) and enjoy considerable authority. It is important, therefore, to involve them in research concerned with understanding social contexts and processes. This is particularly pertinent in healthcare, where considerable strategic development and change are features of everyday practice that may be guided or perceived as being guided, by elites.
This paper evolved from a study investigating the availability and role of nurses whose remit involved leading nursing research and development within acute NHS Trusts in two health regions in Southern England. The study design included telephone interviews with Directors of Nursing Services during which time the researchers engaged in a reflective analysis of their experiences of conducting research with an `elite' group. Important issues identified were the role of gatekeepers, engagement with elites and the use of the telephone interview method in this context. The paper examines these issues and makes a case for involving executive nurses in further research. The paper also offers strategies to help researchers design and implement telephone interview studies successfully to maximise access to the views and experiences of `hard to reach groups', such as elites, while minimising the associated disruption
Psychometric Evidence of a Multidimensional Measure of Prosocial Behaviors for Spanish Adolescents
Prior theories and scholars rarely distinguished between distinct forms of prosocial behaviors (i.e., actions intended to benefit others) and most scholars operationalize prosocial behaviors as a global construct. Furthermore, stringent tests of psychometric properties of prosocial behavior measures are rare, especially in countries other than the United States. The present study was designed to examine the structure and functions of a multidimensional measure of prosocial behaviors in youth from Spain. Six hundred and 66 adolescents (46% girls; M age = 15.33 years, SD = 0.47 years) from Valencia, Spain, completed the Prosocial Tendencies Measure-Revised (PTM-R), measures of sympathy, perspective taking, and a global measure of prosocial behavior. Results showed that the hypothesized 6-factor structure of the PTM-R had good fit, the best fit model as compared to alternative models, and that there were several unique patterns of relations between specific forms of prosocial behaviors and sympathy, perspective taking, and the global measure of prosocial behavior. Furthermore, although there were significant gender differences in some forms of prosocial behaviors, the structure of the PTM-R was equivalent across gender. Discussion focuses on the implications for theories and measurement of prosocial behaviors
Effect of mean void fraction correlations on a shell-and-tube evaporator dynamic model performance
In this paper, the influence of different mean void fraction correlations on a shell-and-tube evaporator dynamic model performance has been evaluated. The model proposed is based on the moving boundary approach and includes the expansion valve modelling. Several transient tests, using R134a as working fluid, have been carried out varying refrigerant mass flow, inlet enthalpy and secondary fluid flow. Then, the model performance, using different mean void fractions, is analysed from the system model outputs (evaporating pressure, refrigerant outlet temperature and condensing water outlet temperature). The slip ratio expressions selected are: homogenous, momentum flux model, Zivi's, Chisholm's and Smith's correlations. The results of the comparison between experimental and model predictions depend on the transient characteristics and there is not a single slip ratio correlation that provides the best performance in all the cases analysed.Navarro-EsbrĂ, J.; Milián Sánchez, V.; Mota Babiloni, A.; MolĂ©s Ribera, F.; VerdĂş MartĂn, GJ. Linking Distributive and Procedural Justice to Employee Engagement Through Social Exchange: A Field Study in India
Research linking justice perceptions to employee outcomes has referred to social exchange as its central theoretical premise. We tested a conceptual model linking distributive and procedural justice to employee engagement through social exchange mediators, namely, perceived organizational support and psychological contract, among 238 managers and executives from manufacturing and service sector firms in India. Findings suggest that perceived organizational support mediated the relationship between distributive justice and employee engagement, and both perceived organizational support and psychological contract mediated the relationship between procedural justice and employee engagement. Theoretical and practical implications with respect to organizational functions are discussed
Horizontal Branch Stars: The Interplay between Observations and Theory, and Insights into the Formation of the Galaxy
We review HB stars in a broad astrophysical context, including both variable
and non-variable stars. A reassessment of the Oosterhoff dichotomy is
presented, which provides unprecedented detail regarding its origin and
systematics. We show that the Oosterhoff dichotomy and the distribution of
globular clusters (GCs) in the HB morphology-metallicity plane both exclude,
with high statistical significance, the possibility that the Galactic halo may
have formed from the accretion of dwarf galaxies resembling present-day Milky
Way satellites such as Fornax, Sagittarius, and the LMC. A rediscussion of the
second-parameter problem is presented. A technique is proposed to estimate the
HB types of extragalactic GCs on the basis of integrated far-UV photometry. The
relationship between the absolute V magnitude of the HB at the RR Lyrae level
and metallicity, as obtained on the basis of trigonometric parallax
measurements for the star RR Lyrae, is also revisited, giving a distance
modulus to the LMC of (m-M)_0 = 18.44+/-0.11. RR Lyrae period change rates are
studied. Finally, the conductive opacities used in evolutionary calculations of
low-mass stars are investigated. [ABRIDGED]Comment: 56 pages, 22 figures. Invited review, to appear in Astrophysics and

Chromosomal localization of 15 ion channel genes
Several human Mendelian diseases, including the long-QT syndrome, malignant hyperthermia, and episodic ataxia/myokymia syndrome, have recently been demonstrated to be due to mutations in ion channel genes. Systematic mapping of ion channel genes may therefore reveal candidates for other heritable disorders. In this study, the GenBank and dbEST databases were used to identify members of several ion channel families (voltage-gated calcium and sodium cardiac chloride, and all classes of potassium channels). Genes and ESTs without prior map localization were identified based on GDB and OWL database information and 15 genes and ESTs were selected for mapping. Of these 15, only the serotonin receptor 5HT3R had been previously mapped to a chromosome. A somatic cell hybrid panel (SCH) was screened with an STS from each gene and, if necessary, the results verified by a second SCH panel. For three ESTs, rodent derived PCR products of the same size as the human STS precluded SCH mapping. For these three, human Pl clones were isolated and the genomic location was determined by metaphase FISH. These genes and ESTs can now be further evaluated as candidate genes for inherited cardiac, neuromuscular, and psychiatric disorders mapped to these chromosomes. Furthermore, the ESTs developed in this study can be used to isolate genomic clones, enabling the determination of each transcript's genomic structure and physical map location. This approach may also be applicable to other gene families and may aid in the identification of candidate genes for groups of related heritable disorders.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45548/1/11188_2006_Article_BF02369898.pd
