Beyond A/B Testing: Sequential Randomization for Developing Interventions in Scaled Digital Learning Environments
Randomized experiments ensure robust causal inference that are critical to
effective learning analytics research and practice. However, traditional
randomized experiments, like A/B tests, are limiting in large scale digital
learning environments. While traditional experiments can accurately compare two
treatment options, they are less able to inform how to adapt interventions to
continually meet learners' diverse needs. In this work, we introduce a trial
design for developing adaptive interventions in scaled digital learning
environments -- the sequential randomized trial (SRT). With the goal of
improving learner experience and developing interventions that benefit all
learners at all times, SRTs inform how to sequence, time, and personalize
interventions. In this paper, we provide an overview of SRTs, and we illustrate
the advantages they hold compared to traditional experiments. We describe a
novel SRT run in a large scale data science MOOC. The trial results
contextualize how learner engagement can be addressed through inclusive
culturally targeted reminder emails. We also provide practical advice for
researchers who aim to run their own SRTs to develop adaptive interventions in
scaled digital learning environments
Teacher qualification and the achievement gap in early primary grades.
Title I of the No Child Left Behind Act (P.L. 107-110, 115 Stat. 1245, 2002) holds schools accountable for reducing the academic achievement gap between the different ethnic groups and requires elementary school teachers to have at least a bachelors degree and a state certification. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the qualification requirement of NCLB to the goal of reducing the academic achievement gap. The study found that students with a certified teacher for most of their early school experience scored higher in reading than students who did not have a certified teacher. In addition, certification was associated with slightly narrowing the academic gap between African American and European American students across early elementary grades
Addressing Leandro: Supporting Student Learning by Mitigating Student Hunger
Many students face barriers that prevent them from reaching their full potential in school and beyond. Although some of these barriers are outside the domain of education, solving hunger is one challenge that is both important for school performance and feasible as a policy option. This report reviews the economic importance of investing in strategies to reduce hunger among students, highlights innovative approaches available to schools and districts, and reviews state-level policies to mitigate this challenge for students in North Carolina

Developmental Acquisition of Regulomes Underlies Innate Lymphoid Cell Functionality
Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) play key roles in host defense, barrier integrity, and homeostasis and mirror adaptive CD4(+) T helper (Th) cell subtypes in both usage of effector molecules and transcription factors. To better understand the relationship between ILC subsets and their Th cell counterparts, we measured genome-wide chromatin accessibility. We find that chromatin in proximity to effector genes is selectively accessible in ILCs prior to high-level transcription upon activation. Accessibility of these regions is acquired in a stepwise manner during development and changes little after in vitro or in vivo activation. Conversely, dramatic chromatin remodeling occurs in naive CD4(+) T cells during Th cell differentiation using a type-2-infection model. This alteration results in a substantial convergence of Th2 cells toward ILC2 regulomes. Our data indicate extensive sharing of regulatory circuitry across the innate and adaptive compartments of the immune system, in spite of their divergent developing pathways
A General Catalogue of Molecular Hydrogen Emission-Line Objects (MHOs) in Outflows from Young Stars
We present a catalogue of Molecular Hydrogen emission-line Objects (MHOs) in
outflows from young stars, most of which are embedded. All objects are
identified in the near-infrared lines of molecular hydrogen, all reside in the
Milky Way, and all are associated with jets or molecular outflows from young
stars. Objects in both low and high-mass star forming regions are included.
This catalogue complements the existing database of Herbig-Haro objects;
indeed, for completeness, HH objects that are detected in H2 emission are

Birthing and Parenting a Premature Infant in a Cultural Context
The purpose of this longitudinal qualitative descriptive study was to explore American Indian (AI) mothers’ perceptions of parenting their premature infants over their first year of life in the context of their culture, including the birth and hospitalization experience. A convenience sample of 17 AI mothers and their premature infants were recruited from either a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) or pediatric clinic in the southeast. Semistructured interviews were conducted at two time points. Through content analytic methods, three broad categories were revealed: descriptions of having a premature infant in the NICU, descriptions of parenting a premature infant, and the influence of Lumbee culture on parenting a premature infant. Certain aspects of AI culture appear to be important in having a premature infant in the NICU and in parenting a premature infant. We recommend that healthcare providers deliver culturally appropriate care that fully supports AI mothers and their premature infants
