    On the Behavior of the Effective QCD Coupling alpha_tau(s) at Low Scales

    The hadronic decays of the tau lepton can be used to determine the effective charge alpha_tau(m^2_tau') for a hypothetical tau-lepton with mass in the range 0 < m_tau' < m_tau. This definition provides a fundamental definition of the QCD coupling at low mass scales. We study the behavior of alpha_tau at low mass scales directly from first principles and without any renormalization-scheme dependence by looking at the experimental data from the OPAL Collaboration. The results are consistent with the freezing of the physical coupling at mass scales s = m^2_tau' of order 1 GeV^2 with a magnitude alpha_tau ~ 0.9 +/- 0.1.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review D, added references, some text added, no results nor figures change

    Quartic Gauge Couplings and the Radiation Zero in pp to l nu gamma gamma events at the LHC

    We report a study of the process pp to l nu gamma gamma at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, using a leading order partonic-level event generator interfaced to the Pythia program for showering and hadronisation and a with a generic detector simulation. The process is sensitive to possible anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings of the form W W gamma gamma. It is shown how unitarity-safe limits may be placed on these anomalous couplings by applying a binned maximum likelihood fit to the distribution of the two-photon invariant mass, M(gamma gamma), below a cutoff of 1TeV. Assuming 30fb-1 of integrated luminosity, the expected limits are two orders of magnitude tighter than those available from LEP. It is also demonstrated how the Standard Model radiation zero feature of the qq to W gamma gamma process may be observed in the difference between the two-photon and charged lepton pseudo-rapidities.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

    Hadronic Antenna Patterns as a Probe of Leptoquark Production at HERA

    Hadronic antenna patterns can provide a valuable diagnostic tool for probing the origin of the apparent excess of high x,Q2x,Q^2 events at HERA. We present quantitative predictions for the distributions of soft particles and jets in standard deep inelastic scattering eqeqeq \to eq events and in events corresponding to the production of a narrow colour-triplet scalar (`leptoquark') resonance. The corresponding distributions of soft photon radiation, which are sensitive to the leptoquark electric charge, are also presented.     Resummation of the hadronic tau decay width with the modified Borel transform method

    A modified Borel transform of the Adler function is used to resum the hadronic tau decay width ratio. In contrast to the ordinary Borel transform, the integrand of the Borel integral is renormalization--scale invariant. We use an ansatz which explicitly accounts for the structure of the leading infrared renormalon. Further, we use judiciously chosen conformal transformations for the Borel variable, in order to map sufficiently away from the origin the other ultraviolet and infrared renormalon singularities. In addition, we apply Pade approximants for the corresponding truncated perturbation series of the modified Borel transform, in order to further accelerate the convergence. Comparing the results with the presently available experimental data on the tau hadronic decay width ratio, we obtain αs(Mz)=0.1192+0.0007exp.+0.0010EW+CKM+0.0009th.+0.0003evol.\alpha_s(M^z) = 0.1192 +- 0.0007_{exp.} +- 0.0010_{EW+CKM} +- 0.0009_{th.} +- 0.0003_{evol.}.     Weak Boson Production Amplitude Zeros; Equalities of the Helicity Amplitudes

    We investigate the radiation amplitude zeros exhibited by many Standard Model amplitudes for triple weak gauge boson production processes. We show that WZγWZ\gamma production amplitudes have especially rich structure in terms of zeros, these amplitudes have zeros originating from several different sources. It is also shown that TYPE I current null zone is the special case of the equality of the specific helicity amplitudes.Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures, 2 table

    Strong coupling constant from τ\tau decay within renormalization scheme invariant treatment

    We extract a numerical value for the strong coupling constant \alpha_s from the \tau-lepton decay rate into nonstrange particles. A new feature of our procedure is the explicit use of renormalization scheme invariance in analytical form in order to perform the actual analysis in a particular renormalization scheme. For the reference coupling constant in the \MSsch-scheme we obtain \alpha_s(M_\tau)= 0.3184 \pm 0.0060_{exp} which corresponds to \al_s(M_Z)= 0.1184 \pm 0.0007_{exp} \pm 0.0006_{hq mass}. This new numerical value is smaller than the standard value from τ\tau-data quoted in the literature and is closer to \al_s(M_Z)-values obtained from high energy experiments.Comment: 8 page

    Azimuthal asymmetries in lepton-pair production at a fixed-target experiment using the LHC beams (AFTER)

    A multi-purpose fixed-target experiment using the proton and lead-ion beams of the LHC was recently proposed by Brodsky, Fleuret, Hadjidakis and Lansberg, and here we concentrate our study on some issues related to the spin physics part of this project (referred to as AFTER). We study the nucleon spin structure through pppp and pdpd processes with a fixed-target experiment using the LHC proton beams, for the kinematical region with 7 TeV proton beams at the energy in center-of-mass frame of two nucleons s=115\sqrt{s}=115 GeV. We calculate and estimate the cos2ϕ\cos2\phi azimuthal asymmetries of unpolarized pppp and pdpd dilepton production processes in the Drell--Yan continuum region and at the ZZ-pole. We also calculate the sin(2ϕϕS)\sin(2\phi-\phi_S), sin(2ϕ+ϕS)\sin(2\phi+\phi_S) and sin2ϕ\sin2\phi azimuthal asymmetries of pppp and pdpd dilepton production processes with the target proton and deuteron longitudinally or transversally polarized in the Drell--Yan continuum region and around ZZ resonances region. We conclude that it is feasible to measure these azimuthal asymmetries, consequently the three-dimensional or transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (3dPDFs or TMDs), at this new AFTER facility.Comment: 15 pages, 40 figures.     Measurement of the Nucleon Structure Function F2 in the Nuclear Medium and Evaluation of its Moments

    We report on the measurement of inclusive electron scattering off a carbon target performed with CLAS at Jefferson Laboratory. A combination of three different beam energies 1.161, 2.261 and 4.461 GeV allowed us to reach an invariant mass of the final-state hadronic system W~2.4 GeV with four-momentum transfers Q2 ranging from 0.2 to 5 GeV2. These data, together with previous measurements of the inclusive electron scattering off proton and deuteron, which cover a similar continuous two-dimensional region of Q2 and Bjorken variable x, permit the study of nuclear modifications of the nucleon structure. By using these, as well as other world data, we evaluated the F2 structure function and its moments. Using an OPE-based twist expansion, we studied the Q2-evolution of the moments, obtaining a separation of the leading-twist and the total higher-twist terms. The carbon-to-deuteron ratio of the leading-twist contributions to the F2 moments exhibits the well known EMC effect, compatible with that discovered previously in x-space. The total higher-twist term in the carbon nucleus appears, although with large systematic uncertainites, to be smaller with respect to the deuteron case for n<7, suggesting partial parton deconfinement in nuclear matter. We speculate that the spatial extension of the nucleon is changed when it is immersed in the nuclear medium.Comment: 37 pages, 15 figure

    Precise Measurements of Beam Spin Asymmetries in Semi-Inclusive π0\pi^0 production

    We present studies of single-spin asymmetries for neutral pion electroproduction in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of 5.776 GeV polarized electrons from an unpolarized hydrogen target, using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. A substantial sinϕh\sin \phi_h amplitude has been measured in the distribution of the cross section asymmetry as a function of the azimuthal angle ϕh\phi_h of the produced neutral pion. The dependence of this amplitude on Bjorken xx and on the pion transverse momentum is extracted with significantly higher precision than previous data and is compared to model calculations.Comment: to be submitted PL

    Lambda and Sigma0 Pair Production in Two-Photon Collisions at LEP

    Strange baryon pair production in two-photon collisions is studied with the L3 detector at LEP. The analysis is based on data collected at e+e- centre-of-mass energies from 91 GeV to 208 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 844 pb-1. The processes gamma gamma -> Lambda Anti-lambda and gamma gamma -> Sigma0 Anti-sigma0 are identified. Their cross sections as a function of the gamma gamma centre-of-mass energy are measured and results are compared to predictions of the quark-diquark model
